Ambient music using a Kawai K5000R

"This synthesizer is still so amazing whenever I use it! I bought it on sale and, along with my Ensoniq Fizmo, it was the first real synthesizer I ever owned. My only regret is that I don't use it much more often because this synth deserves it. Maybe I'm just worry that it might break at some point. It has been upgraded with a Nalbantov USB port so I can load and save sounds without needing floppy disks.

I used for the recording the following FX chain: Kawai K5000R - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. On some tracks Compressor and EQ where added in Cubase. The final song was then mastered using iZotope Ozone.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

Ensoniq Fizmo on the Big Screen - Füür oder Flamme - a Swiss Movie

"The movie is titled "Füür oder Flamme" and from 2002. See this link for details.

Heinz (Stefan Gubser) and Olaf (Manuel Löwensberg) love the same woman Tina (Mona Petri). Heinz is a marketing guy and Olaf is a musician delivering pizza for a living.

The first shots are in his loft, where he is recording music (see the DAW on hte monitors) and later playing it to Tina. Later he is moving into the flat of Heinz, which is shown in the two final shots. Here the Fizmo can be seen in it's full glory. Story wise they end up as all three plus a baby in the flat of Heinz."

"Ensoniq Fizmo 5U rackmount version, super hard to find these days! This one was just serviced with a NEW voltage regulator (notorious problem) that has been corrected. Factory patches have been restored over Sysex like new. Sounds absolutely insane!

Fully functional unit, main volume control knob is unoriginal (purple cap). Several pot shafts are slightly crooked -- but fully functioning without issue (see detailed pictures). Includes a Lexicon power supply that is to factory spec.

Fizmo rack utilizes real-time Transwave synthesis, a powerful synthesis engine capable of 48-voice polyphony, state-of-the-art 20-bit output converters, 24-bit on-board effects with 41 algorithms including the Ensoniq Vocoder, an arpeggiator with 118 editable patterns."

Ambient Music with an Ensoniq Fizmo

"This is ambient music with my Ensoniq Fizmo. All patches I created just on the fly during the recording session, and all stems I recorded live into the DAW.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated or tweaked.

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and iZotope Ozone on the master track."

I remember when the Fizmo came out many were dissapointed it didn't sound like a virtual analog synth. Now it's a bit of a gem.

"The Fizmo (1998) uses a Digital Acoustic simulation Transwave with 4 MB of ROM, up to four voices per preset, each voice with two oscillators, independent LFOs and FX: 48 voices maximum, with three separate fx units (24-bit VLSI effects with 41 algorithms) built in for further sound sculpting. The Fizmo featured 61 keys, and responded to velocity, channel aftertouch, as well as allowing the sounds to be split by velocity and keyboard position (note)."

"Fizmo working great and in very good condition. The power supply has been future proofed to avoid the failures that can happen to them. A few small scratches i tried to highlight. The knobs were looking dry so i conditioned them as shown in the last few pictures, with a shot comparing before and after of a knob."

"Ensoniq Fizmo - serviced (including 5v regulator), fully working, factory reset and loaded.

Fizmos do create sounds and evolving textures I've never heard from any other synth. With stackable oscillators, real time control, and the very flexible arpeggiator which can be used as a control source, the Fizmo creates complex tones quickly.

Considering it combines analog and digital features, the 48-voice synthesizer uses 2nd-generation Transwave technology to create very organic sounds. Interestingly, the Fizmo has the ensoniq 24-bit VLSI effects with 41 algorithms, including a Vocoder and the ability to process incoming audio through the Vocoder and effects.

There are 2 oscillators available for each of the 4 presets allowing for 8 unique oscillators at the same time, not to mention individual LFO and Noise generators for each Osc. It's possible to stack four individual presets together into one sound and map them across the keyboard."
