Cosmic Rays Music - Prototype Realtime Score and Sequencer Software

Giorgio Sancristoforo

"Working at the prototype of my cosmic rays realtime score and sequencer software.
The software is connected to a muon particle detector that sends realtime data to the computer. The ADC values are converted to MIDI notes as well as fingering for my ancient greek kithara (κιθάρα). I will use this software and detector for my forthcoming ambient music performance κόσμος (Cosmos)."

Quadrivium Orbital Synthesizer-Controller (sneak preview)

Giorgio Sancristoforo

"12 moons orbiting around the four giant gas planets as modulation sources? Yes! Orbital data from Jan 1 2020 to Jan 1 2030 (hour by hour) are used in the forthcoming Quadrivium synthesizer to modulate oscillators, filters, delay and create incredible spacey soundscapes.
Did I mention that you can also use the moons' orbits to modulate your MIDI gear? :D
Soon available at https://www.giorgiosancristoforo.net"

antimatter annihilation and modular synth

Giorgio Sancristoforo

"For the first time in history, antimatter is used for music.

All the sounds of this piece are triggered by positron annihilation from a Na22 source. For the task I've programmed a custom gamma spectroscope that outputs the annihilation gamma peaks at 0.511MeV, these pulses are sent in realtime to a MIDI to CV converter.

A positron is the anti-particle of the electron, having positive charge instead of negative. Positron emission is a special case of beta decay. Inside the unstable nucleus, a proton is transformed into a neutron, and in the process, the nucleus emits a neutrino and a positron.

As soon as the positron encounters an electron on its path, they attract each other and finally annihilate, transforming all their mass into energy (2 entangled gamma photons at 0.511MeV), following E=mc^2.

I'll film the process in the next weeks.
Use headphones for best listening experience.

Dedicated to the memory of Iannis Xenakis."

My DNA controls a modular synthesizer - rs6025

Published on May 30, 2020 Giorgio Sancristoforo

"In this video the F5 gene of my chromosome 1 (Exons and introns) is used to program a modular synthesizer (Endorphin.es Shuttle System).

Blocks of 16 codons are used to control 16 parameters of the synthesizer like frequency, amplitude, filters cutoff, envelopes, FM modulations etc.

The experiment is a continuation of my sci-art research on my whole genome, which started at the EU's Joint Research Centre in 2019.

This particular gene was chosen due to SNP rs6025 in position: chr1:169,519,049.

Direct live recording on Zoom H5, without edit or efx added."

Introducing Substantia - Electroacustic Physical Modeling Laboratory

Introducing Substantia from Giorgio Sancristoforo on Vimeo.

"Substantia (latin: substance), is an electroacustic physical modelling laboratory with hundereds of models. It is a modal synthesis software with integrated euclidean sequencer and recorder.

Many modal synthesis tools, so far, have a limited number of options and models. Some instruments give you just inharmonicity and dumping controls over a bank of resonators, some other offer few models like a pipe, a plate, a box, and usually a very small selection of materials: metals, plastic, wood…

Substantia has 16 different models and 23 materials, ranging from Aluminium to Nickel, Glass, Marble, Sapphire, Platinum, Gold, Nylon, Uranium and more, for a total of 368 resonant models. (The list will grow with updates).

For unparalleled precision, Substantia uses 100 Resonant Band Pass filter for each voice, for a total of 800 filters (8 voice polyphony).

You can excite the resonators with contact microphones (2 for stereo sound), samples, or white noise and experience a new exciting way to make digital sounds with human gestures. Substantia is a powerful tool to create new hyper-real sounds, from amazing bongos to luxurious glassy and metallic textures.

A must have for experimental musicians, lovers of new frontiers of sound.

New Form of Digital and Analog Sound Synthesis Based on Tropical Algebra

This one is in via Giorgio Sancristoforo, the man behind GLEETCHLAB/GLEETHCHPLUG, and BERNA 2.

"I've release our paper on Tropical Additive Synthesis, a new for of analog or digital sound synthesis based on Tropical Algebra created by me with the mathematician Cristiano Bocci."

Details from Giorgio Sancristoforo's website where you can find a PDF download of his paper on the new synthesis method.

"Tropical additive synthesis is a new form of digital and analog sound synthesis that uses Tropical Algebra.

You are free to use this paper for commercial (software and hardware) musical instruments, both in digital or analog form, at the following conditions:

1) The module must display a “trop(x[n])” logo with Times New Roman font (italic) in white, over a red background (color hex code: 84120a)
2) The user manual must credits the authors: “trop(x[n]), tropical additive synthesis ©2018 Cristiano Bocci and Giorgio Sancristoforo”

The number of oscillators can vary between 2 and 10. But this is just a suggestion.
If you need help with the oscillator’s development, please drop me a line and I’d be glad to help you."

You can find a PDF download of the paper on Tropical Additive Synthesis on Giorgio Sancristoforo website here.

On radioactive music 1: Ray of Light MCA/s

Published on Feb 11, 2019 Giorgio Sancristoforo

"In this first chapter I illustrate my work on the sonification of radioactivity using gamma spectrometry.
Ray of Light (Muti Channel Analyser/Synthesizer) is a music software written with Max8 and uses a modified version of the FFT analysis and 512 sinusoidal oscillators. The software analyses the pulses coming from a Gamma Spectacular SG-1100 Pro Spectrometer with a 1.5" NaI(Tl) scintillator.

The work was presented for the first time, at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra - Italy, during the Datami A.i.R. Residence on February 24th 2019."
