Gristleizer Stompbox With MicroKorg

YouTube via keepyourkings

"This is the official Gristleizer Stompbox demo from Endangered Audio. Based in Asheville, NC, Endangered Audio recreated an effect unit built by Roy Gwinn in the 70s and popularized by the band Throbbing Gristle. Here, Mark Boyd of King Tut runs the Gristleizer all sorts of ways through, around, and by a MicroKorg synthesizer. The three versions of the Gristleizer now available from Endangered audio include the stompbox, the tabletop, and the pc board. Go to http://smashingguitarsasheville.com/e... to check them out!"

Gristleizer for Modular Synthesizers - Demo (revised version).

video upload by EdEditz

"The original Gristleizer project on my website had a tiny mistake in it which has now been corrected and the Gristleizer works soooo much better now so here is the revised demo showing what you can expect from it. Of course I only demoed it with a sawtooth wave. More and different effects can be achieved with other sound sources such as the human voice or other synthesizers or a guitar even. You can find complete build instructions for this project on my website here: https://www.eddybergman.com/2021/09/g..."

Gristleizer Modules presented by Future Sound Systems & Roy Gwinn // Modular Meets Leeds 2017

Published on Sep 28, 2017 DivKidVideo

"What an absolute pleasure to have Finlay of Future Sound Systems and Roy Gwinn present the new Gristleizer modules at Modular Meets Leeds 2017. Unfortunately Chris Carter couldn't be with us on the Sunday (although links to his performance and interview below) but Roy shared his stories of the original unit created when he was only 15 years old, revisions, ideas, googling his own name and Finlay then took us through a series of killer audio demos with Mutable Instruments Braids through the modules, electric guitar and beats from a Korg Volca. I feel honoured to have people like this involved with Modular Meets so thanks to all involved! "

Future Sound Systems Eurorack Modules (Including Gristleizer)

Published on Dec 16, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Future Sound Systems modules have all of your distortion and signal destruction needs covered. FSS worked with Chris Carter of Throbbing Gristle to turn the Gristleizer effect into multiple modules with more features and CV controls that the original Gristleizer. The OSC1 and FIL3 are an oscillator with interesting wave shaping controls and a wild dual filter reminiscent of an MS20.

FSS also has a collection of routing and utility modules including a 9X9 pin matrix module, 6 channel muting module with both momentary and switched muting. The MAKROW macro control outputs 6 CVs by turning one knob or from a single CV control.

"These units are hand made and are awesome modulator/synth units for guitars, synths, keyboards, vocals (if crazy enough).

It also has an output for a expression pedal that you can adjust the frequency "on the fly" (very cool)..

some more info on the unit:

THE GRISTLEIZER IS AN ANALOG SYNTHESIZER EFFECT UNIT FOR USE WITH ALL TYPES OF INSTRUMENTS AND SIGNALS. THE VERSATILE LFO CAN MODULATE SIGNALS, AND WITH THE OTHER CONTROLS CAN OFFER AN INCREDIBLE VARIETY OF SONIC POSSIBILITIES. FROM FILTER EFFECTS IN VCF MODE TO UNIQUE TREMOLO AND RING MODULATION LIKE SOUNDS IN VCA MODE THAT RANGE FROM SUBTLE TO UNRECOGNIZABLE.

THE GRISTLEIZER IS THE LEGENDARY EFFECT USED EXTENSIVELY IN THE MUSIC OF THROBBING GRISTLE BY ELECTRONIC MUSIC VISIONARY, CHRIS CARTER WHO ADAPTED THE CIRCUIT FROM A DESIGN BY ROY GWINN AND BUILT THEM FOR THROBBING GRISTLE.

FEATURES
LFO WAVEFORM SELECT: 4 WAVEFORMS TO MODULATE YOUR SIGNAL IN VCA OR VCF MODE

FREQ: CONTROLS THE FREQUENCY OF THE LFO FROM .25HZ (1 CYCLE IN 4 SECONDS) TO 100HZ

DEPTH: CONTROLS THE LEVEL OF THE LFO MODULATION APPLIED TO THE SIGNAL

BIAS: CONTROLS THE INTENSITY AND GRIT OF THE MODULATION ON YOUR SIGNAL IN VCA MODE AND IN VCF MODE, SHIFTS THE CENTER FREQUENCY OF THE BAND PASS FILTER

Endangered Audio Research Thee Gristleizer #6 Signed

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is #6 of the original run of Gristleizers made by Endangered Audio in Asheville, NC. These are the only Gristleizers officially endorsed by Chris Carter and Throbbing Gristle. This was my personal Gristleizer from 2009 until now. TG got serial numbers 1-5, I got #6, and the owner of Endangered Audio Research got #7. Serial numbers 8-15 were sold at the Logan Square show in Chicago during TG's reunion tour of the USA. This effect is a big part of TGs sound as well as their history. I personally presented TG with their Gristleizers in Chicago. There are photos documenting the occasion on Chris Carter's website gristleizer.com.

This until shows some signs of use and the CV in and out mod was done at some point. There is an 18v power adapter included with the sale. Also included is an extra top to the enclosure. This top is blank (no signatures) so you can take it out and use it without worrying about scratches or dings on the original. It is initialled on the inside by Todd Kelley, owner of Endangered Audio Research, and is marked #6 on the inside as well as the bottom. The number on the bottom is worn a bit, but is still there."

Analog Crafstman ULTRAgristleizer Demo

Published on Dec 19, 2012 by boothnavy

"A special edition custom build for a customer in Holland. We added a digital noise source that is selectable as the modulator of the VCF/VCA on the Gristleizer. It also has its own controls for an external clock input and cv of the noise rate. There is a separate noise output that can be fed back into the various inputs of the Grsitelizer. I easily spent an hour just trying all the crazy combinations this one has."

Future Sound Systems Gristleizer - TG4 Modulator - Chris Cater, Roy Gwinn and Finlay Shakespeare

Published on Dec 7, 2017 DivKidVideo

"Here's the first in a series of a few videos on the new Eurorack Modular Synth modules based on the Gristleizer as used by Chris Carter from Throbbing Gristle. Roy Gwinn (who designed the original circuit in 1970s) and Chris Carter have worked with Finlay Shakespeare of Future Sound Systems to update and expand on the original Gristleizer with many updates and extras for the modular format.

This video is on the TG4 Modulator, which is the VCA in the series. But it's a highly characterful, drive, saturation and distortion module as well."

Minimoog + Gristleizer + AD4096 + Ampex ATR-102 Tape Warble

Published on Apr 16, 2016 Bimini Road

"The Minimoog is running through the Endangered Audio Research Gristleizer to an AD4096 analog delay (which will be for sale soon at Hey Day Music in Asheville, NC). It then goes into an Apollo 8 where it passes through a Neve 1073 Preamp to an Ampex ATR-102 set to 3.5IPS 456 formula with tons of wow and flutter.

For mixing, I used the Slate VCC Neve, the Manley Vari-Mu, Manley Massive Passive Mastering EQ, and finally back through another pass of the Ampex on 30IPS 250 formula."

My studio - 1981

flickr by Chris_Carter_ where you'll find a description of the studio. Be sure to click on the All Sizes link when you get there for the full size shot. This is also Chris Carter's MySpace page. Note the Gristleizer.

The synths:
"The modular system on the right consists of three Roland 190 racks and two 191J racks containing: two 182 Step Sequencers, 121 Dual VCF, 130 Dual VCA, 112 Dual VCO, 150 Ring Mod/Noise/S&H/LFO, 110 VCO/VCF/VCA, 172 Audio Delay/Phaser/LFO/Gate Delay.
Also included in the Roland racks were a number of my own self-built modules, including a: Digisound Dual VCO, Digisound Dual VCF, Digisound Dual VCA, Digisound Dual ADSR, Digisound Dual RM, Blacet variable clock/divider, a Gristleizer module and (in the top rack) a flanger/delay and a dual phaser/flanger/delay.
Under the modular system is a Boss DR-55 Dr. Rhythm (sitting on top of) a Roland CSQ-600 Digital Sequencer, a Roland TR-808 (one of the first in the UK I might add), a Sinclair frequency meter (for tuning) and a Roland 181 Controller Keyboard."

sent my way via Benge. BTW, do check out this post on Benge's Twenty Systems as well. The CD is a tribute to synths and comes with a very nice CD book on the synth used for each track. The CD received praise from Brian Eno.
