Brad burst onto the scene with the innovative KordBot and then followed it up with the utterly amazing S2400, an instrument that took its core inspiration from the classic E-MU SP1200 and rocketed it into the 21st Century!

Now, on the cusp of the next Isla Instruments release, the hugely exciting Caladan synthesizer, Brad joins us from his Florida base to tell us all about it and give us an insight into its development and the team behind it."

Well, today is a milestone, everything is ready and has been sent off to fabrication to make the first hardware prototypes.

Caladan is (will be) an 8-part multi-timbral polyphonic analog / digital hybrid synthesizer.

We are carrying on the legacy of a fantastic, groundbreaking synthesizer called the 'Parva' by FutureSonus. Building on its DNA, we are putting our own twist on it to make it the perfect partner to the S2400.

Same form factor, same aesthetic (yes, same wood sides if you want)

It will bring polyphonic playback of multi-sampled instruments (SF2, SFZ, +) out of the box.
But the special sauce is the 8x expansion slots inside the case which will allow me to go completely fucking nuts with add-in voicecards.

OPL3, SID, SEM, SH-101, MiniMoog, Pro-1, etc etc... all these flavours can be realised on expansion cards and all accessed by a common UI.

Voicecards can of course be analog OR digital. The intention is to open this side of the synth up to allow 3rd party developers to create cards also.

I'm literally creating MY 'Dream Synth' and I want to take you along for the ride.

First hardware should be here in a few weeks!!

"This is the 13th video of my electronica series called "Ambient diaries". The song contains the mighty Beat Machine Isla Instruments S2400. My Erica Synths SYNTRX II synthesizer adds some playing nice melody with modulation action. Moog Voyager is playing bass going through a Bettermaker Stereo Passive Equalizer and Arturia Polybrute is in pad mode routed through a Mäag EQ4M in M/S mode. Reverbs, delays with CXM 1978, Empress Reverb and Zen Delay."

"In a recent gig I had to recreate the openings of more than 40 80s chart hits. One song was 'Take on me' by A-ha. The song starts with the only drums and it has a very recognizable drum part. As I studied the drum pattern I realized there was some genius programming at work here.

From nothing to musique concrète with Isla Instruments S2400

"Look mum, no sequencer !

Isla Instruments S2400 is a modern sampler inspired by E-MU SP-1200.
Yes, you can create vintage, lofi and dirty Hiphop/House/Techno with it, but you can also compose modern stuff with neat sound quality. Before the review (i'm still working on it), i wanted to show how to perform a musique concrète-ish track without using the sequencer. Nothing is written before, all the sounds are performed live with pads, faders and filters.

S2400 only, with une pincée de OTO Machine BAM at the end, because there is no reverb in the actual firmware. But i hope it will change (This is a message for Brad and Vlad ^_^).

How it works :

Instead of using discrete and short sounds on each track, i like to use very long recording as a library of sounds, textures and ambiances. With the faders help, i can change playhead position, volume and pitch for each track. Pads are used to trigger and re-trigger sounds, filters to make room for frequencies.

As files bigger than 64MB can't be loaded in the S2400 editor, changing playhead position needs to be done blind, but that's part of the fun. You never know what you will trigger next, you need to improvise, and each performance is unique."
