Modular Ambient Chords

Published on May 30, 2017 Jörg Schaaf

Jörg Schaaf is the man behind Radikal Technologies.

"Modular Ambient Chords
I created a patch with the following modules: A-155 sequencer, A-147-2 VCDLFO, A-140 ADSR, RT-311 Swarm Oscillator, RT-451 Dual Multimode Filter and the RT-1701 'EFFEXX' Multi FX processor. I was so surprised by these floating ambient tones that I forgot to check the ISO settings of my DSLR camera. As a result, I received a noisy video footage. It really looked bad. So I decided to replace that footage with some Landschaftspark clips - which are not really much better. Anyway. It's all about that modular patch. So just close your eyes and listen to the modular ambient patch.
What the patch does: I have two audio signal sources. One audio signal is the output of the envelope generator and one signal is a chord from the swarm oscillator. These signals are fed into the inputs of the RT-451 Multimode filter. The outputs of the filter are fed into the EFFEXX Multi FX unit. The envelope signal source is triggered by the LFO. The LFO also triggers the step sequencer. The control voltages of the step sequencer control the cutoff frequency of both filters, the delay tuning of the EFFEXX string filter and the pitch of the swarm oscillator. I am changing the following parameters during the performance:
The reverb level.
The string filter frequency.
The modulation depth and speed of the string filter delay time.
The delay feedback.
The cutoff frequencies of the multimode filter.
The speed of the LFO.
I hope, you enjoy this litte ambient track."

Corona Session 2 - A little lullaby

video by Jörg Schaaf

Jörg Schaaf Corona Sessions

"Everyone talks about Corona and Covid 19 every day. In most cases the result is a really depressing mood. The fear to get sick, the loneliness while staying home, all the missing friends etc. Really disgusting. We should start to see Covid 19 as a chance. The chance to find time to realize things, you would not get done in normal times. I for example finished my album in 2020, grew vegetables in my garden and spent more time than ever with my hobbies. I did not spent so much time in my pub. So, I drunk less beer. All that are positive aspects. I even started jogging in 2020.

That’s the reason, I call my night sessions from now on Corona sessions. Just to help you guys seeing that pandemic as a chance as well. You have one life! So, spend time with yourself and do something, you always wanted to do but never found the time to do. I prepared a nice little video studio at a rent place and I can go there whenever I want to and can perform music and shoot videos. That is a great pleasure for me.

Here is Corona Session 2. For the first time, I added some little fog to the performance. That gives hopefully an illusion of a real live concert.

When my favorite pub Klimbim in Gießen is opened again, the final Corona session will take place and a new name will be born.
Little improvisation with the following machines:
2x Delta CEP A (the percussive sequence and the solo/meldody leadsynth)
1x Accelerator (All the pads)
1x Spectralis (The massive bass sequence)
2x Keystep keyboards. One of them plays the sequence, that runs on Delta CEP A 1.

Live MIXED on 1 Atem MINI PRO Video Mixer
Cameras and lenses:
Canon EOS-80D with Walimex Cine Lense 35 mm/1,5
Canon EOS 250D with Sigma 10-20 mm/4
Canon EOS 200D with 18-55 kit lense
Elgato Streamdeck for camera switching and macro recall.

Meanwhile the album is available on my bandcamp page:

Delta CEP A Snapshot Morphing & Drum Module Demos

Published on Feb 11, 2019 Jörg Schaaf

"The Delta CEP A morph function is based on snapshots. A snapshot is a subprogram within a soundprogram. Snapshots can hold variations of the sound or complete different sounds. The snapshots can then morph from one step to the next. In this example the keystep sequences the Delta CEP A. The Delta CEP A sound morphs through eight different snapshots.

Delta CEP A as a drum module

Published on Feb 11, 2019 Jörg Schaaf

"Why not using the Delta CEP A as a drum module? I saved snapshots of different drumsounds. Afterwards I connected a Doepfer A-155 sequencer. The sequencer line triggers the envelope, one control voltage line selects the snapshots and one line controls the pitch. I fed the drum groove into the FXs of my mixing desk from time to time to add more variations. But I really like the opportunity to use the Delta as a drum module."

Dawless Jamming by Jörg Schaaf of Radikal Technologies

Dawless Jamming Vol 1

Published on Jul 26, 2016 Jörg Schaaf

"I am using the Spectralis 2, an Accelerator, the Strymon Timeline delay and some eurorack modules (RT-451, Crossmodulated oscillators, VCAs and Envelopes).
All the drum and fx sounds in the Spectralis have been sampled from the eurorack system. Before starting my jam I spent a couple of hours in the creation of new kicks, snares, hihats and strange sounds. The Spectralis 2 hybrid synth does all the sequencer and bass sounds. I hope you enjoy the video!"

For the first time I used stock footage for a music video. Let me know what you think about using them. I especially like the work from Mikhael Nilov, who made the spaceship footage! The inspiration I received from watching the scenes also brought my music to a new level.

The music is available as a BandCamp album:

One step at a time...

Published on Feb 18, 2018 Jörg Schaaf

Jörg Schaaf of Radikal Technologies.

"In this little sequencer example I am using the pitch quantizer of the Delta CEP A and the Swarm oscillator to modify multiple sequences just by changing the scaling of the sequencer control voltages. As I selected the same pentatonic scale for both quantizers, the resulting sequences always match and create endless variations.

I am playing a little bit on the Spectralis hybrid synth from time to time. But it I apologize that this live playing sometimes sound like I am drunken or falling asleep. I can promise that that was not the case. I just forgot to activate the realtime quantize function of my right thumb and pinky ;-)

The sequences are running over the Delta CEP A delay and the Spectralis over a Strymon Timeline.
I am using both RT-311 outputs. One is fed into the external input of the Delta CEP A and the other output is fed through the RT-451 filter into a separate VCA with an independent envelope. The output of the VCA is then fed into the direct FX input of the Delta Cep A."

Imaginary Journey

Published on May 27, 2019 Jörg Schaaf

Jörg Schaaf of Radikal Technologies and previously Quasimidi.

"The first three tracks of my upcoming album "Imaginary Journey. I am very excited that the brilliant studio musician and film composer Tobias Becker joined me for the second track and played a wonderful oboe improvisation. His work adds a very special element to the electronically produced ambient tracks. I highly recommend to check out his own work as well.
track listing:
1.) departure
2.) behavior in the dark
3.) river crossing
Release date of the album 01.07.2019.
I am meanwhile using my mobile phone for most of my videos. In this case I just walked around and produced some footage here and there. Don't expect something very special.

Jörg Schaaf - Hypnotica Hypnotica

Published on Mar 9, 2018 Jörg Schaaf

"Tonight I tried to bring a little bit controlled random into a A-155 sequence. My approach is a little bit different from other setups. It uses one VCA, a noise source and a sample and hold module. Very important in this setup is also a quantizer for the pitch control voltage. I used the Delta Cep A quantizer for that and selected a minor pentatonic scale for my sequence. The output from the sequencer is fed into the VCA input and the VCA output connects to the 1V/Oct input of the oscillator. If you run the sequence you can already change the resulting melodies by changing the VCA level. You will realize, that lower pitched notes will get affected less than higher pitched notes. I like that behavior. Adding random is quite easy. One trigger line of the A-155 sequencer triggers the Sample and Hold Circuit. The noise is connected to the S&H probe input and the S&H output connects to the VCA control voltage input. Because of the quantizer, only matching notes are generated.

I added a bass sequence from the Spectralis Hybrid synth with Spectralis' internal step sequencer. Some steps are running with a probability of only 50% to get variations in the bass sequence too. On top of the two main sequences I added a little disturbance by triggering a chimes multisample I did last week. In order to get a more unrealistic metallic sound out of that multisample I set the envelope to a very short decay and send this through the hiphpass filter, put some random pan onto it and added a pitch modulation (vibrato). Logic ProX acts as the clock for the A-155 (via an Arturia Keystep) and for the Spectralis.

I could not resist to play some live notes on top of the backings. I played mainly the Accelerator, the DX-7 II and the D-550. I hope, you like it...

And yes - everything sounds just better with a couple of different delays. So I added them here too ;-)"

Jörg Schaaf Live at Synthesizermesse Hamburg/Just music

Uploaded on Nov 2, 2009 Jörg Schaaf·21 videos

"Andreas Tofahrn (http://www.tofahrn-foto.de) was so kind taking some moving pictures from my Spectralis 2 live performance in Hamburg. Thanks to Jan Lüthje (Just Music Hamburg) for organisation and catering.
All other songs of my live performance are already covered in other videos here at youtube. So, this is only a small excerpt of the whole concert. I used the skip function of the Spectralis step sequencer for some variations of the tonal sequence. The lighting of the stage was a little bit clumsy so I added some even more clumsy video effects;-)
