Uncharted Space | Patching a 'Krell' on the System Cartesian

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"When it's about MakeNoise gear, I love to do special requests. So feel free to share your ideas. Obviously this is for privileged System Cartesian owners or anyone with a dual function generator, a source of uncertainty, a vco and a vca. So get your TTA/Buchla 200T series out. You don't need a sequencer.
Why not try something like this on the Tape & Microsound and use QPAS as a VCA! It will work too and you'll get amazing results with a cool Morphagene reel. Maybe even a single cycle wavetable reel. Go visit uncharted space and (don't) get lost."

[patch] Krell: An Aleatoric Sound (Blofeld)

video upload by Synthesizer Video Service

Also see What is Krell? Louis & Bebe Barron - Ancient Krell Music (Forbidden Planet) & More

"This is a mega-tutorial about how to program the Krell sound from the 1956 film "Forbidden Planet" on a Waldorf Blofeld. You should expect heavy use of modulation and modifiers. But first, we are going to have a look on the history of the Krell patch. Then we start programming with the help of my "Blofeld Modifier Simulator".

Attention! My sorry, I forgot to set the sustain to 65 in envelope 4 :(

[demo] 10 Minutes of Krell Patch (Blofeld)

"This is a demonstration of a self-playing eternal patch, programmed on a Waldorf Blofeld synthesizer. A lot of modulations and modifiers were used. There was no external post-processing and no external effects were applied. The hands were off the unit and the keyboard, though the arp is playing very slow and long 'notes'.

'Krell' is an alien species from the film "Forbidden Planet" (1956). The soundtrack for these creatures was composed by Louis and Bebe Barron and very popular among modularists. It's a good example for an aleatoric patch - a sound playing with the help of randomness."

The NOISE Genre - Music or Bullsh*t?

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Definitely not Bullshit!

On Sunday, October 16 2022, @Modular World will host the Patch On - Noise Challenge where 30 artists are going to prove that 'noise music' is fun. For most of us, 'noise music' is a never ending blast of extreme distortion and feedback, played as loud as possible. Many of us will feel it doesn't even qualify as music. However, according to Wikipedia, it's defined as 'expressive use of noise in a musical context, where conventional use of melody, harmony and rhythm is abandoned. I'd say a typical Krell patch already qualifies for this. I'll be joining the 30 people on the Noise Challenge event, so I had to do some research. I think the modular community is very comfortable with making noise in general, I am sure we're all patching really weird stuff from time to time. So in this video I am going to share my progress and some background info. Hopefully I'll read some of you in the chat on October 16"

New England Synth Fest - Bill T Miller Synthesizer Performance @ Museum of Science Boston - 08.11.22

video upload by Bill T Miller

"Bill T Miller Synthesizer Performance @ New England Synth Fest @ Museum of Science Boston - 08.11.22. This BTM stereophonic improv performance features a CLASSIC SYNTH array... Buchla Easel Command 208-C, Korg ARP 2600, Moog Mother-32, Make Noise O-Coast and 4MS STS Sampler & Toppobrillo MiniMix.

Video Produced/Directed/Edited by Bill T Miller
Cameras: BTM & Sheri Hausey & Beth Moguel

BILL T MILLER, a chameleon of sonic exploration, is a multi-instrumentalist musician, composer, recording engineer, producer, filmmaker, photographer, artist, instrument builder and cat lover. From toy piano at two years old to starting a "band" with tennis racket guitar and trash can drums in the 60s to becoming a professional recording engineer / producer / live sound tech after graduating from College for the Recording Arts in San Francisco in 1976, his paths are always unfolding and looping. At recording college he took synthesizer courses with ARP 2600 and Emu synths and then worked (as live sound and recording engineer) in California until 1980.

Eventually ending up in Boston working as a freelance recording engineer and live sound engineer and then starting his own Headroom Recording Studios. While much of his "professional career" was devoted to recording and photographing OTHER artists, he was always working on his own weirdo music bands in the shadows. Some of these adventures include Out of Band Experience (OBE), Kings Of Feedback, Drum Army, Kings Of Slack, Zonkulator, and Orgy Of Noise with over 25 full album releases on his own DIY labels as an artist.

BTM's quest has looped back around to a nostalgic look forward incorporating ALL of the past adventures while moving sideways in time in to an unknown future think void. Living in Boston for 37 years and giving every moment to this insatiable desire to CREATE and SHARE is focus of his true path.

This is the first time MakeNoise sponsored me a module, so this video officially has 'product placement'. But for me, MakeNoise modules don't count, they're in the DNA of this channel. It's more about passion, love and destiny. For the record, I pre-ordered a second one from retail. Alien modules used are the Doepfer A178 Theremin controller, the Tiptop Buchla 245T and the Making Sound Machines Stolperbeats."

Doepfer A178 Theremin Voltage Source - feat. J Daniel Cramer

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"On September 3rd, 2022, Dutch Modular Fest hit the former Pieter Baan Center in Utrecht. I got some new gear (more coming soon) but I've been blown away by a performance from J. Daniel Cramer (all the way from Canada). He used four (4!) Doepfer A178's to create a polyphonic Krell on a 'tiny' TipTop Mantis case.
(https://www.youtube.com/c/jdanielcramer). I recorded a few snippets of his performance on video so you can be part of it too - and ordered two A178's the days after. So all credits for this idea go to mr. Cramer, Todd Barton and Dieter Doepfer.

I've been wondering if I could translate this concept to my favorite fields of grain: granular synthesis. I took a leap of faith and ordered a second Arbhar. I patched up the two Harvesters with the A178's, Lubadh, QPAS and Mimeophon. So it's still a relatively low module count (I guess 104 HP would do it) but the level of expression is amazing. I used a vocal snippet from my dear friend Julia M. (former boss of 007) who performs as 'Lucid Yin' all over the EU. (https://www.instagram.com/lucid_yin)."

Proverbial KRELL Patch. Generative Modular.

video upload by Robert Shipe

"All credit goes to Mr. Todd Barton and Mr. Tony Rolando for their wonderful vids/tutorials on how to create this cool patch. I learned more about modulate-able/looping EGs/Slope Generators/Function Generators from this patch than anything else I've done. I like to throw together some Krell at least twice a year. If you haven't tried it please check out these videos below and give it a shot!"
