SOMA Pulsar-23 and Make Noise Strega with Meris Mercury X reverb jam

video upload by Bobo Meijer

"Jamming away with the SOMA Pulsar-23 and Make Noise Strega. This could have been way shorter because it’s not happening much here but I got carried away 😌 adding the Meris Mercury X to the Strega can definitely bring some very nice results… i just have some difficulty taming the Strega itself and think i want an 0-ctrl for it but not sure to keep this or go for a Lyra-8 perhaps."

Lyra-8 Masterclass | Because we ain't no dummies.

video upload by Cinematic Laborat

"I wanted to share what I learned about Lyra-8, but I am no master. It's a bit pretentious to even call this a Masterclass, but I don't consider my audience as 'dummies' either. I guess the only true master out there is Vlad Kreimer, and I bet he's still learning Lyra-8.
It's a design, designed to escape the designer. It will play along for a while, but at some point it will just be impossible to control. Once you realize this, you're on your way becoming a master. You would not even try to control it and just enjoy where it takes you. So in a twisted way, Lyra-8 isn't hard to play, it's hard to accept it as it is. If you manage to master this, playing Lyra-8 is easy.

I truly enjoyed making this video, for myself and for you. I hope it will help, and I hope you'll enjoy it too. This video is dedicated to Eric, who is outthere somewhere waiting for the moment when I finally have some time on Zoom.

Elmyra2 Revisited with Imitor, Melotus & Desmodus Versio

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"It's been two months since I supported the Elmyra2 launch wave. But it's not gathering dust. It's maturing like good wine. This video doesn't add much to the first one, except I'll be using a lot more CV and starting RAW with no effects. Indeed, it reminds a bit of the Lyra-8 sonically, but the Elmyra is much easier to control and there's no built in FM. You'll need a masterclass for Lyra-8, but you can just play Elmyra and make dark organic drones, textures and music. I've included some short Lyra-8 snippets for you to compare. Elmyra 2 can't go to the high notes, where Lyra-8 can go higher than you can hear. So I will not compare them, but enjoy them both."

Ambient doom with the Neutral Labs Elmyra 2 and Walrus Sloër

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

Neutral Labs sent over the Elmyra 2 for free. I was interested to try it because it has some of the spirit and playfulness of the Lyra 8, but much more control over pitch. It's also geared toward overdriven, saturated sounds, which is where my head is at these days. All of that was cool and amazing about the Elmyra, but I particularly fell in love with the sequencer, having four independent sequencer lines with differing lengths for the four voices.

I'll probably never use this thing's wavetables, but the basic oscillator sounds are nice. The filter options are fantastic. I really love the circuit-bending-style chips that change the drive option. And having oscillators that tune to semi-tones? Incredible. I wish all eurorack did that.

Anyway, along with the Walrus Sloër (doing some heavy lifting on pitched reverb), this was an unexpected song that came together quickly thanks to the extensive sequencer. I look forward to pairing this synth with some other simple devices and making some more ambient doom.

Neutral Labs Elmyra 2 - four synthesizer voices
Walrus Sloër - pitched reverb

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Bad Gear is MASSIVE

video upload by AudioPilz

"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools.

There aren’t many software companies whose influence on electronic music is comparable to iconic hardware brands like Roland and Korg - Native Instruments is certainly one of them.

They defined the industry standard for sampling, established in-the-box modular synthesis and made using FM much too easy but today we are going to talk about Massive.

Putting this 2006 wavetable softsynth and primary ghost writer of the first three Skrillex EPs on the show is - quite literally - long overdue as, after the usual venture capitalist fustercluck and discontinuation of Absynth, it can only be a matter of months until this classic plugin stops working properly on contemporary computers.

Tortured DB-01 filter harmonics soothed with a Big Sky (no talk, possibly no music)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"I like melody. Looking back at when I played synth-punk live back in the day, the music then probably had too much melody. Well, I'm making up for it here. It's just playing with sweet-spot harmonics made bearable by the newly-bought Big Sky. Too nuanced? Too nerdy? Not even music? Maybe, but look at them harmonic peaks :D

In my recent post asking whether I should send back this glowing blue reverb cliche a sizable group voted for "Make some videos and we'll let you know". It's got to be some praise for the Big Sky that these droning harmonics suddenly became sweet to my ears. In fact I didn't intend to make a video about this at all. I was just booting up the new Big Sky to make sure it worked (after my sad experience of a DOA Line6 DL4), got to preset number 2, tweaked it, twiddled the DB-01's filter knob, and here we are.

So there's some hesitation in posting this since it seems incredibly obscure. Five minutes of resonant squeals? Yet I found it strangely hypnotic and satisfying. The only other filter I've come across which was even close to the Polivoks in twiddle-fun was the classic Moog ladder on my now long-departed Sub-37. It is also fun to discover separate tones with tiny filter movements. OTOH maybe it's just the Big Sky doing all the work?

Perhaps it's best to look on this as you would a dreamy session on a Lyra-8: It's not so much music as a brainwave meditation session. And that's not bad at all for a little mono bassline synth.

As usual there is absolutely no processing other than what you see: A DB-01 and the Big Sky (plus the old sci-fi samples).

BRiES Nontemporary Toolkit / LYRATE for Decent Sampler

video upload by BRiES

"To download or find out more about the LYRATE plugin pack, visit the Decent Samples webshop: http://www.decentsamples.com

Inspired by the leftfield Lyra 8 instrument by Soma Labs LYRATE offers an unusual interface that enables harmonic (and dissonant) experimentation with a broad set of soundsources. Just like with the SYNTHS one plugin pack I wanted to provide the means to make complex and cinematic sounds yourself. To make this pack I didn’t sample a real Lyra 8, instead I recorded several other (hardware) synths including modular VCOs and a vintage Korg MS20. The core feature of Lyra 8 (i.e. being able to tune and tweak the individual voices) is what excited me to create these virtual instruments."

A synth design masterclass by SOMA SYNTHS Vlad Kreimer.

video upload by mylarmelodies

"In this talk, Soma's Vlad Kreimer explains the unique difference behind 'organismic' synths like the Lyra-8 or Terra vs. everything else. He also explains how other synth brands could be more organismic - and why they may want to be. I believe ideas in this can inspire synth designers as well as anyone designing modular patches..."

What is Ovum? (And how might one use it?)

It is a simple instrument suited to drones and ambient, but becomes most interesting (in my opinion) when paired with other instruments.
