Moog One fiddling with Marc Doty #TSR19

Published on Mar 27, 2019 Molten Music Technology

"I get hold of a Moog One polyphonic analogue synthesizer and grab synth guru Marc Doty to help me talk about it. It's more like two old fools talking about and fiddling with an awesome synthesizer. But it was also our first video at Thomann Synth Reaktor and we were still a bit boggled by it all."

MATRIXSYNTH 2013: Bob Moog Foundation Booth

Marc Doty Presentation at the Bob Moog Foundation Booth

Uploaded on Feb 3, 2013 matrixsynth·256 videos

Bernie Worrell at the Bob Moog Foundation Booth

Two videos at the The Bob Moog Foundation booth. The first is Marc Doty (aka AutomaticGainsay) giving an overview of modular synthesis on Erik Norlander's Moog modular.  I'm not sure how much of the beginning I missed as I dropped by the booth when it was in progress.  The second video is of Bernie Worrell of Parliament-Funkadelic and Talking Heads checking out a Synthetic Sound Labs modified Moog Minimoog synthesizer with SSL's Doug Slocum.   BTW, if you are into Steampunk be sure to check out SSL's modular systems. Note the mini is duo-phonic and has a joystick rather than wheels. The mini is also capable of different triggering modes. You can hear Doug telling Bernie when he sets it to multi-trigger so each note played re-triggers the envelope. Also at the booth was a "MiniWoouf" couch donated by WOOUF! of Barcelona. And of course Bob Moog's daughter Michelle Moog-Koussa was present.  Be sure to click the pics below for the super size shots.

Roland SH-1000

"Do yourself a favour, and NEVER READ any review of the SH-1000 on the internet. ALL of them inaccurately portray the Roland SH-1000. Hopefully, this video will bring some accuracy and clarity. Feel free to link to this video or post it on your page, but please give me credit by marking it "by Marc Doty." Thanks!"

Note this is the one from this video.

"Roland Sh1000manual
The Sh1000 has historical value being the first synth Roland made but it is also a great little monophonic synth. As Marc Doty below says , dont believe everything thats written or said on the net cause its just one persons opinion. Use you own eyes and ears to evaluate what you like. The presets sound great and can be changed by frequency mod /amp mod. The synth section is very easy to use and you have great control over sound shaping . All parts of the users synthesis section are easy to use and have a very unique sound . The filter section is especially good sensitive ,powerful and raw. it also has some very unique controls such as random noise switch which can be modulated in a number of ways.Very stable tuning with easy access to 3 tuning points ; the pitch knob on the front section (up a 5th /down 5th ) , overall tuning pot on the input section and a tuning pot on the bottom of the keyboard for adjusting the pitch spread of the octaves."

Automatic Gainsay Synth Demonstration Music

Published on Jul 3, 2019 AutomaticGainsay

"Most of the intro and outro themes used in Automatic Gainsay synthesizer demonstrations are original compositions and performances by Marc Doty where the synth being featured in the demonstration is used to provide all of the elements of the theme.

These themes are usually largely improvised multitrack recordings atop drums provided by live performances, sequenced synthesizer drum sources, or manipulated and edited GarageBand loops.

Here are the Automatic Gainsay synthesizer demonstration themes from 2006 through 2011. Most of these themes focus on a single synthesizer used as the tonal source for the entire theme. The drums are often live performances by Marc Doty or Pat Simmons. Electric guitar is usually provided by Klayton Giese.

Bob Moog’s Birthday Garners Google Recognition and Industry Support

The Bob Moog Foundation Press Release:

"May 23, 2012 Asheville, NC-- The Bob Moog Foundation is joined by supporters worldwide in their celebration of the anniversary of the synth pioneer’s 78th birthday. Global technology leader Google released their latest doodle, an interactive, synthesizer-based, playable logo, which honors Bob Moog’s inventions. The Moog Doodle can be played using a mouse or by typing to make nearly limitless sounds. Keeping with the theme of 1960s music technology, a keyboard is patched into a 4-track tape recorder allowing the play back and sharing of songs via short links. The doodle can be viewed and played at www.google.com.

Google software engineer Joey Hurst’s plains the impetus behind the Moog doodle, "With his passion for high-tech toolmaking in the service of creativity, Bob Moog is something of a patron saint of the nerdy arts and a hero to many of us here at Google."

BMF Archive and Education Specialist Marc Doty has posted a 15 minute video demonstrating the various parameters of the doodle synthesizer. His video has over 8,000 views and has been picked up by Mashable and the Washington Post. The video can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/JFkWqi

To promote the incredible doodle tribute, the Bob Moog Foundation is hosting a contest on the home page of its website. Music fans from around the world can share their musical creations in the comments section of the blog on the home page of www.moogfoundation.org. A winner will be chosen and awarded Arturia’s Dr. Bob’s Collector’s Pack, which includes award-winning Minimoog and modular Moog software (valued at over $300).

Furthering the celebration, Moog Music, Inc. will donate 50% of all online clothing and merchandise sales on May 23rd to the Bob Moog Foundation. For every $350 raised, the company will also donate one Etherwave Theremin to the Foundation’s educational initiative, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool. This promotion includes their brand new line of product-inspired apparel boasting graphics bold enough to induce a geekfest for synth enthusiasts everywhere. Moog instruments are not included in the annual event.

BMF/macProVideo series "Foundation of Synthesis" Grows to Six Courses

MACPROVIDEO.COM/ASKVIDEO.COM AND THE BOB MOOG FOUNDATION SYNTHESIZE THE MOOG LEGACY AND EDUCATION in FOUNDATION OF SYNTHESIS SERIES

"October 2, 2012 (Vancouver, BC) macProVideo.com announces the release of the final three courses in the Bob Moog Foundation’s six part series, Foundation of Synthesis. This series couples Bob Moog’s passion for synthesis and innovation with macProVideo.com’s passion for bringing top tier education to audio lovers everywhere. The courses are led by Marc Doty, the Bob Moog Foundation’s Archive and Educational Specialist. Known throughout the synthesizer community for his instructional videos, Doty employs his understanding of electronic music history, synthesis, and the physics of sound in order to enlighten and engage geeks and novices alike to the principles behind sculpting sound. Synthesist Erik Norlander is featured throughout the series employing his massive Wall of Doom modular Moog synthesizer to assist in demonstrating concepts.

On the courses, Doty comments, “The great revolution in synthesis that took place in the 1960s was voltage control, in no small part due to the efforts of Bob Moog! The second series of videos dives into that topic and shows how the oscillator, filter, amplifier, and more can be controlled with the envelope and LFO, or by each other, through voltage control. It is through modulation that you really grasp how each section of the synthesizer is connected, and allows you to envision the most creative and musical applications of the various parts.

Steve Horelick, macProVideo.com’s and AskVideo.com’s says, “We set out to create courses for musicians who want to really learn how to use actual synthesizers. With hardware opportunities spawned by the Eurorack modular craze, the kind of synthesis that Bob Moog was so innovative with is becoming accessible to a wider audience and a new generation. Being able to bring this world to our users is something we are really proud and excited about! A portion of proceeds from the course sales go directly to the Bob Moog Foundation to support their educational programs.”

The first three courses were hugely successful and have already generated considerable funding for the Foundation. For more information on macProVideo.com and to view the courses, please visit www.macprovideo.com. For more information and how to get involved with the Bob Moog Foundation, please visit their website, http://moogfoundation.org/."

WHERE'S THE MINIMOOG!?

Published on Mar 21, 2019 once upon a synth

"Look mum no computer jokingly challenged us to make a song using this footage, so I couldn't resist. This was some live stream footage from Thomann Synth Reactor. Thanks to Marc Doty for expressing his passion for the Minimoog and Simon the Magpie for the brief appearence. #TSR19"

Some synth humor for you today. :) We need some "WHERE'S THE MINIMOOG!?" Synth Ts.

Here's what Marc had to say about it:

"You know, if German beer companies really cared about visiting Americans, they would label their innocent-looking lager bottles with warnings in red letters that are big enough for old people to read that say "Easy there, tiger... there is more alcohol than you're used to in this." But they don't. So, plainly, we have German beer companies to thank for this outcome."

Early Moog Modular

via Marc Doty's Photos.

If you remember from this post and this earlier post, Marc is spending the Summer with The Bog Moog Foundation.

If you look at the large panel towards the left you'll see what looks like a filter bank. I was curious if this was one of the five only in existence, mentioned at 6:47 in the video below, by the late David Hillel Wilson, former curator of The New England Synthesizer Museum. If you look at the video you will see that it is not the same. It is also not the same as the 914 Filter Bank pictured here, or the 907A here. It looks closest to the 914. [Update 1/6/12 via Brian Kehew: "The old filter module is an original 907 Fixed Filter bank (the 907a is the same thing, but turned vertically; I assume to save panel space. The 914 is 'Extended' meaning more bands and options"]

Update: some additional info from Michelle Moog-Koussa: "Hi All, this modular was the demo unit at R.A. Moog, Co. I believe the modules are dated 1967, but I'll have to double check. In 1970, when Bill Weytana took over the company, Bob sold this synth to David Borden, a good friend and a founding member of Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece. David used the synth for years until sometime about 10 or 15 years ago, Bob called him and asked if he could have it back, at which point David sent it without hesitation. It's the only modular we have in the archives and we're very grateful to have it. The synth still bears the Mother Mallard plaque on the left side. Here's a photo of it, taken at our Pushing the Envelope Exhibit: http://www.facebook.com/l/EAQCbjJb1/on.fb.me/o17LeM. @Matrix, I don't think this is a special filter bank like David was talking about, although it would be amazing to have one of those in the archives. It looks like this system most closely resembles a "Synthesizer Ic' from the 1967 catalog. @Custom synth, it's not used.......yet. When we have the resources to restore it and share it, we will certainly use it!"

YouTube Uploaded by turbid on Oct 28, 2007

You can find all three parts in this post commemorating David Hillel Wilson, as well as this earlier post.

Couple of screen grabs (I'm pretty sure I have some better pics from my visit back in 2006):

Bob Moog Foundation Commemorates Sixth Anniversary

YouTube Published on Aug 20, 2012 by moogfoundation

"Bob Moog's legacy lives on in the rock stars and panelists at Moogfest 2011. Find out why Bob's extraordinary legacy deserves to be carried forward.

Featuring: Moby, Wayne Coyne, Diego Stocco, Eric Persing, Bryan Bell, Dick Hyman, Terry Riley, David Borden, Joel Cummins, Alan Vega and Torley."

"Asheville, NC - August 20, 2012 - Tomorrow marks seven years since beloved synthesizer inventor Bob Moog passed away in 2005. It has also been six years since his family formally established the non-profit Bob Moog Foundation. The BMF continues to advance Bob’s legacy by announcing several recent projects ranging from educational videos to a Web page tracing the history of synthesizers. The “Moogmentum” that the BMF initiated in the summer of 2006 continues picking up steam.

In cooperation with macProVideo.com, the Bob Moog Foundation introduces a tutorial series titled The Foundation of Synthesis with Marc Doty. Six videos cover the History of Synthesis; Oscillators; Filters; Control Voltage; VCAs, Ring Modulation, and S&H; and Applied Synthesis. Education specialist Doty, best known for his YouTube-based synth instruction, has created custom animations and uses a variety of instruments to demonstrate these six concepts. In addition, keyboardist Erik Norlander makes an appearance to give a brief tour of his massive modular synthesizer affectionately known as the Wall of Doom. The first three videos from this exclusive series will be available on August 23 for individual downloads or to monthly or annual macProVideo.com subscribers. A large portion of the proceeds will go to benefit the BMF.

A new promotional video, produced by Flying Pig Studios in Asheville, highlights the Bob Moog Foundation’s unquenchable desire to inspire innovation and ignite creativity. It features performers and panelists from last year’s edition of the annual music festival held in Bob’s honor, Moogfest 2011. Musicians such as Moby, Dick Hyman, and Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips talk about Bob Moog’s lasting impact on the world of music and the importance of continuing his legacy. You can view the video at http://youtu.be/VO-9JtN5-a0. [embed above]

This week the BMF is also releasing free online video coverage of “History of the Minimoog,” one of the most spirited and informative panel discussions of Moogfest 2010. Watch and learn as legendary Moog collaborators Bill Hemsath, Tom Rhea, Dave Van Koevering, and Herb Deutsch discuss their individual roles in developing the Minimoog synthesizer in 1970 as part of a team effort with Bob Moog.

Anyone who has researched the history of synthesizers knows how frustrating it can be to find consistently reliable information. As part of the Foundation’s relentless effort to rid the world of misinformation, the BMF announces its comprehensive Timeline of Synthesis, which will be posted on its website beginning this week.

Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool is making news, too, with its ongoing mission to teach the science of sound through the magic of music. After concluding its pilot program in 8 Asheville second-grade classrooms this past spring, DBSS is expanding to 25 classrooms in Asheville and Buncombe County schools for the 2012–2013 school year. Using traditional and electronic musical instruments with custom educational materials, the BMF plans to expand DBSS to 100 classrooms in North and South Carolina by 2014.
