The Microskill AS32 Synthesizer - Britain's Answer to the PPG Circa 1985

An article from Electronics & Music Maker on the Microskill AS32 via noyzelab. You can find additional scans of Electronics & Music Maker at noyzelab's site here.

"From the wilds of West Yorkshire comes a new computer-based instrument that could be Britain's answer to the PPG."

Note this is the first Microskill post on the site.

Side note: I was curious what happened to Electronics & Music Maker and did a lookup on Wikipedia. There isn't an article on the magazine however it was mentioned in a number of other articles including one on Mark Jenkins who has been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH a few times. Mark was the Music Editor for the magazine.

Anvil Synthesizers "The Anvil" Digital Percussion Synthesizer Circa 1985

1985 E&MM article scan in via noyzelab. You can find additional scans of Electronics & Music Maker at noyzelab's site here.

"You probably don’t need me to tell you that it takes a good deal of nerve to enter into the commercial arena of hi-tech musical instruments, especially if you’re an unknown name and attempting R&D on a shoestring budget. Yet that’s exactly what a new British company, Anvil Synthesisers, have tried to achieve with their advanced digital drum machine, the Anvil."

Note this is the first Anvil post on MATRIXSYNTH.

Side note: I was curious what happened to Electronics & Music Maker and did a lookup on Wikipedia. Robert Schroeder's Vintage DIY Synth Designs

An article via 1982's E&MM in via noyzelab. You can find additional scans of Electronics & Music Maker at noyzelab's site here.

Robert Schroeder composed his own electronic music, was friends with and worked with Klaus Schulze. The following are a couple of excerpt on the article regarding his designs which you can see pictured:

“The synthesizers and sequencers used on “Harmonic Ascendant” were all designed and built by Robert. All the synthesizers were monophonic. I asked him if he had ever designed or built a polyphonic synthesizer or had any plans for doing so in the future; his answer was a very definite ‘No!’”

“After the release of his first album, Robert wrote a book entitled “Sequencer - Ein Musikcomputer(?)”. Available only in German, it gives full details on how to build a complete 30-note sequencer, including component lists, PCB patterns and circuit diagrams, all designed by the author himself. He claims it can be built for a tenth of the price of commercially available sequencers in Germany.”

Note this is the first post to feature Robert Schroeder as a maker.

There isn't an article on the magazine however it was mentioned in a number of other articles including one on Mark Jenkins who has been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH a few times. ZW BASSMACHINE rare Wasp style analog synth with Moog style filter

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"ZW BASSMACHINE
Rare Swiss/Italian monophonic analog synth.

Good cosmetic condition example of the incredibly rare ZW-Electronics Bassmachine, which as far as I can find out is a Swiss-Italian design made in extremely small numbers.

I have heard this one working, but it's currently silent, and so sold as in need of repair. This may be as simple as a loose cable in the power supply, so possibly an easy fix.

Two oscillators can be tuned apart or transposed, and there are 10 preset buttons. The sounds are strong and analog, resembling a Wasp or Roland Bassline - while there are no controls for filter etc, the presets vary these settings for you. Internally you can see the distinctive transistor ladder of a Moog-style lowpass filter design.

Intended for collection in NW London and payment in cash. I will ship, cost will be around £20 with Parcelforce in the UK, more overseas, but I don't acceot payment methods which are subject to unexplained delays and fraudulent reversal. Other methods properly regulated by UK banking authorities are fine - bank transfer for example shows up in 15 minutes, is completely secure and creates a permanent record of your transaction. All my 100% positive feedback comes from transactions using either cash on collection or bank transfer, and no other method.

Listed as internally complete but non-working so absolutely no returns. Feel free to make contact with any questions while the listing is running.

Happy Synthesizing!

QUASIMIDI POLYMORPH Demo Video

Published on Apr 16, 2013 MarkJenkinsMusic·26 videos

via this auction. Note this is a five day listing only. You can contact Mark below. Note I have a strict policy of only listing eBay items on the site and recommending Paypal only so you have buyer protection, however this one is in via Mark Jenkins who has been featured a number of times on the site. I'm guessing he is safe.

"QUASIMIDI POLYMORPH rare polyphonic virtual analog MIDI synth/sequencer

Up for sale is my excellent condition QUASIMIDI Polymorph. Designed with input from Klaus Schulze, this basically simulates a Moog Modular synth and multi-channel sequencer. It's four-note polyphonic and multitimbral, playing four different virtual analog synth sounds created from a huge variety of waveshapes. With MIDI In and Out and effects, the Polymorph can create huge synth sounds, multiple steptime patterns, percussion patterns and much more. Sequences can be chained into Songs and edited live while performing.

This unit's in very good condition complete with rack ears and a UK power supply. Some slight front panel and rackmount scratches.

I'd prefer collection in London but I'll ship to the UK, Europe and the USA, after full cleared irreversible payment. I don't accept any payment method which allows unscrupulous buyers to have funds deducted from the seller's bank account while still in possession of their goods, specifically I DON'T ACCEPT PAYPAL, as I only accept payment methods including bank transfer which are subject to UK and international banking regulators.

Feel free to contact me any time while the auction's running to discuss payment, collection or shipping options.

Happy Synthesizing (and Sequencing!)

MARK JENKINS "EX1T STRATEGY" from "EX1GENE"

Published on Jan 13, 2013 MarkJenkinsMusic·23 videos

"The second promo video for the latest Mark Jenkins CD "EX1GENE" recorded on the Yamaha EX1 polyphonic synthesizer. "EX1T STRATEGY" is more typical of the CD's ambient/world synthesizer content, with comparisons to the music of Brian Eno, Cluster, Ashra, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. The CD is available worldwide via Amazon and www.markjenkins.co"

MARK JENKINS "Peter Gunn" from the CD "EX1GENE"

Published on Jan 5, 2013 MarkJenkinsMusic·22 videos

"MARK JENKINS 'Peter Gunn' from the CD 'EX1GENE'. Composed by Henry Mancini, arranged by Keith Emerson, performed by Mark Jenkins on the Yamaha EX-1. Drums, sound effects, fx, mixing; Apple Mac. Filmed and edited by Mark Jenkins. CD "EX1GENE" by Mark Jenkins out now through Amazon and www.markjenkins.co"

"'Peter Gunn', an award-winning TV detective show theme composed by Henry Mancini, became a staple of Emerson Lake & Palmer's live concerts in the late 1970's and Mark Jenkins first performed the piece in 1985. 'I liked my 1980's version but the opportunity to recreate the piece effectively using the same instrumentation as Keith Emerson but with the added benefits of the latest computer editing techniques and sound effects was very exciting', Mark explains. 'My most recent albums and live performances have all been of sequencer-based iPad music, so multitracking a quite demanding piece played entirely by hand again was a great experience'.

'Peter Gunn' is the first video track released to promote Mark's new CD 'EX1GENE'. 'A lot of the other tracks owe more to world music, krautrock and Brian Eno's ambient style, so this progressive rock piece makes a rousing end to the album. I'll be creating some more abstract videos though for the more chillout oriented tracks on the CD'.

Mark Jenkins will be in concert in the UK and overseas during 2013, though the EX-1, which weighs something over 480 pounds, will definitely not be appearing on stage...

MARK JENKINS "EX1GENE" CD Composed on Yamaha EX1

MARK JENKINS "EX1GENE" (AMP-CD060)

MARK JENKINS has released his latest CD “EX1GENE”, performed entirely on the giant triple keyboard Yamaha EX1 synthesizer, the theatre version of the GX1 played by Keith Emerson (ELP), Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin and Hans Zimmer.

The CD which features nine tracks including a cover of Henry Mancini’s Emmy and Grammy award-winning “Peter Gunn” theme as played by ELP, plus sound samples for musicians to create their own EX1 textures, is available worldwide through Amazon, selected mail order outlets, and direct from Mark’s website.

"After recording the world's first CD created entirely on an Apple iPad, which must be about the smallest synthesiser system available, I thought it would be fun to create an album entirely using one of the largest", Mark explains. The CD features music in the styles of Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Ashra, Cluster and the other "Berlin School" musicians, as well as ambient/world pieces more comparable to the music of Brian Eno, and of course that storming prog rock cover of Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" theme which became a favourite in the Emerson, Lake and Palmer live set.

The album also features the voice of poet Walter De La Mare, and one of the tracks was assembled retrospectively from EX1 sound samples which are also included on the CD for other musicians to create their own EX1 textures. "As an all-analog synth the EX1 has some great rich synth sounds, huge pedal basses and classic drum machine patterns, and it's great to be able to make some of these available to other musicians".

"EX1GENE" is now available worldwide. Since the EX1 weighs 485 pounds, Mark promises he will be sticking to iPads for concert performances...
