Gamechanger Audio Introduces the MOTOR SYNTH MK II

via Gamechanger Audio

MOTOR SYNTH MK 2 FEATURES

2 INDEPENDET MOTOR VOICES
The MOTOR Synth offers two separate MOTOR Voices with 4 Electromotor oscillators each - both voices can operate in mono, unison or in four-note polyphonic mode.

Both MOTOR Voices are equipped with a separate set of controls for adjusting VOLUME, SCALE, WAVESHAPE, individual AMP ENVELOPE engines for each musical note, as well as very detailed control over a deep and versatile PORTAMENTO / PITCH MOD section (called “Acceleration / Brake” ).

SEPARATE MULTI-MODE ANALOG FILTERS
Both Motor voices are equipped with a separate analogue multimode filter section with adjustable DRIVE, CUTOFF, RESONANCE, ENVELOPE SHAPE & AMOUNT and FILTER TYPE.
There are four analogue filter types - 24 dB LP, 12 dB BP, 12 dB HP, 12 dB AP (All-Pass). The new analog filter circuits have increased headroom, improved envelope response speed and a very precise analog Keytrack mode with adjustable depth, direction and filter “glide”.

DIGITAL VOICE
The MOTOR Synth MK II features an additional third voice - a high quality digital engine that can be used either independently, or to augment the raw sound of the MOTOR Voices. The Digital engine (DCO) can be used to produce various classic waveforms (with waveshaping), or as a noise generator.
The DCO is also equipped with a separate, fully controllable AMP ENVELOPE, PORTAMENTO section, and its own Digital multimode Filter designed to reproduce the 4 analog filter modes.

CONFIGURABLE STEREO OUTPUT
The MOTOR Synth has a single output jack that can be configured either as mono, or as a stereo output - thus routing the synth's two motor voices into separate channels. The digital voice can also be routed to the V1 or V2 outputs, or to both.

CROSS-MODULATION AND DETUNE OPTIONS
The MOTOR Synth features a dedicated center indent potentiometer for creating amplitude cross-modulation with either Voice 1 or Voice 2. The Detune / Drift knob gives you two kinds of oscillator detune effects.

MODULATION SECTION WITH THREE ASSIGNABLE LFOS
The MOTOR Synth MKII also features an extremely powerful modulation section that includes 3 individual LFOs with adjustable positive and negative depth controls. Each LFO can be easily assigned to almost any knob or encoder value on two independent modulation slots A and B. There are five independent modulation waveforms available for each LFO - each with a detailed waveshaping engine.

ARP, MOTION RECORD, SEQUENCER
- Powerful arpeggiator engine offers detailed control over a large variety of parameters, including note accent, pattern shift, note repeat and more.
- Multiple independent motion Record lanes assignable to all sound parameters.
- A built-in monophonic sequencer engine with controls for micro-timing, probability, ratchets, pattern length, pattern saving and chaining and much more.

PERFORMANCE KEYBOARD
Non-velocity sensitive 8 key keyboard with 4 pitch shift encoders - this is a small but powerful note input system with a lot of performance tricks up its sleeve. Alternatively, the MOTOR Synth is fully MIDI and CV compatible and can be used with all of your favorite keyboards (incl. poly-aftertouch), controllers and sequencers.

DIY WebMIDI sequencer demo: improvising on Motor Synth, Reface DX and Orba

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"Here's a demo of the progress I made on my own #WebMIDI/Javascript sequencer. In this demo:
- LEDs used for showing status (selected track, active step)
- track muting
- swing!
- copying patterns while playing
- transposing tracks while playing.
- switching and queueing tracks while playing

This sequencer will work in Edge and Chrome(ium). You can try it at https://sequencer.floydsteinberg.com
Feel free to take a look at the source code. I'll also upload a video explaining how it works later.

Synths used:
#MotorSynth for the arpeggiated chords
#RefaceDX for pads and EP
Orba for drums and bass

Effects:
Strymon NightSky

Perhaps not the hottest improv under the sun, but I think there are some nice moments in there."

Relight - A Synth Jam with the Blofeld and the Specular Tempus

video by Lanthan O'Ide

"A retrofuturistic synth jam, performed in an age when a stainless steel rocket has just been chosen to go to the moon. Exciting times. :)
================================
For those playing along at home:
The tempo is at 60 BPM, and the key is E major.
================================
About the title:

This one is space-flight related, and oddly specific. :)
In general, successfully relighting a spacecraft's engines is a cause for cheering at mission control. Because a) restarting a rocket motor is more tricky than restarting a car's engine, and b) if the engines fail to relight, things will go bad and / or explodey fast.

But, for me, the term "relight" is inseperable from the Everyday Astronaut's callout during Starship SN8's test flight.
I had stayed up late that night (CET) to watch together with hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world as SpaceX attempted a high-altitude test flight with a Starship prototype for the very first time. Watching the rocket master almost every single one of it's spectacular maneuvres at the first try was absolutely pure joy.
After the vessel came skydiving from 10 km up while moving itself precisely over the landing pad, having the engines relight to actually transition to the landing burn was just the cherry on top.
(And then the landing ALMOST went explosion-free. But hey, still an incredible success overall)"

Track: Shelter (feat. Xavier Radix) - Synthwave on Akai MPC, Motor Synth, Peak, EX5

video by

"Here's a #synthwave track done on the Akai MPC One, #motorsynth and Novation PEAK. Sidechaining! Gated drums! Tons of synths! Wicked 80s hair metal guitar solo and phatt riffs! Wub wub bass! Jan Hammer-inspired synth sequences! It's all in here. :-)

Guitar by Xavier Radix (see link below). Recorded, mixed and mastered on Zoom R24 #dawless. This is the MPC One in song mode controlling the EX5, PEAK and Motor Synth via MIDI. The song is made up from 14 patterns on the MPC one, which I merged into one long pattern and added the guitar and the vocal track to. Basically, all you need to do then is to press play in song mode and capture the audio output on a recording device (if you're using only MPC, you can also render the output to a WAV file internally). For the sake of this video, I adjusted filter settings and played some notes "live". :-)

MPC One is doing all the heavy lifting here, Motor Synth is doing the "filtered choir" sound in the second verse. EX5 is doing the "rain pad" in the 2nd verse. PEAK is doing the arpeggiated sequencer line. I don't know which effects Xavier had on his guitar, but it sounds pretty awesome.

Motor Synth - dark, ambient woodworking in the night

Floyd Steinberg

"Here's your reminder that the #MotorSynth deserves more attention and fanfare and is very capable of creating great-sounding melodic #electromechanical #ambient music. Motor Synth is an electromechanical synthesizer which generates sound by spinning drone motors. All the sounds in this track were created on this machine and recorded to 4 tracks one after the other (pad, bass, arpeggiator, lead). I used the 'arpeggiator per oscillator' feature on this track for the bass patch and the filtered saw wave thing.
Effects pedals were set up like this: Motor Synth - Strymon Iridium - ZOOM MS100BT - Source Audio Nemesis - Strymon BigSky
Hope you like it, and apologies to @Gamechanger Audio for the practical cinematographic jokes therein. Hope you take it lightly. :-) :-) :-) (In fact, those guys and girls are very cool and sent me hardware revision containing dampers yesterday, so you will see the new and much less noisy version of this machine again in the future)."

Gamechanger Audio Motor Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Motor Synth is an analogue, electro-mechanical synthesizer that uses a system of electromotors as its main sound source.

Motor Synth is a new method of analogue audio signal generation, since controlled electromotors have never been used as the principal sound source for a commercial musical instrument, nothing like this has ever been built before!

Motor Synth produces sounds by accelerating and decelerating eight electromotors to precise rpm (revolutions per minute) that correspond with specific musical notes. The instrument’s eight-electromotor configuration makes it a four-note true polyphonic synth with two voices per key played.

The Motor Synth has two ways of producing its core sound.

Firstly, magnetic pickups are placed on each of its eight electromotors; the spinning coils result in a very industrial-sounding, over-the-top analogue tone. Think eight harmonious revving engines pumping out an intimidating noise!

Secondly, specially designed reflective optical disks have been attached to the shafts of each electromotor. Each disk contains a graphical representation of three standard audio wave-shapes. As the electromotors spin, the disks are set into circular motion, and each wave-shape is read by a dedicated set of infrared sensors, then converted into an audio signal. Thus, the wave-shapes on the reflective optical disks become precise musical notes, corresponding to the speed of the electromotors."
