Motorsynth firmware 1.2 - it's a whole new synth

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"@GamechangerAudio 's #Motorsynth MK1 got a sizeable #firmwareupdate some time ago, and so far, no one talked about that. Until now! :-) This video brushes the most important new features like arpeggiator, #sequencer, motion recording, audio processing and shows all the key presses necessary to use them.

00:00 hello
00:37 what is a Motorsynth?
01:10 new amp envelopes
02:22 new filter envelopes
03:18 cross modulation options
04:31 arpeggiator
07:11 all new sequencer
09:04 motion recording
10:03 extended audio input processing
10:57 wait, there's more
11:51 sound demo (with MPC One for drums and effects)
13:51 summary, what's good, what's worth expanding on"

Lo Fi, but it's all Motorsynth (and MPC One for drums)

Yamaha Electone EX-1 Mega Rare Vintage Synth/Organ

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

See this post for a demo and overview of one by Mark Jenkins, and this post for some additional info on the EX1 vs. EX42 which was the stage model of of GX1, precurssor to the CS80.

Update: It's not clear how much the EX1 is related to the GX1 and CS80. According to Colin f in the comments of this post, the oscillators are digital. The EX1 was released in 1977, the same year the Synclavier was released, as well the same year Bell Labs Digital Synthesizer was developed. You can find some history on digital synthesis on Wikipedia here. The EX1 is not mentioned. According to Mark Jenkins in the comments of this post, the EX1 is is a preset version of the GX1.

"Comes complete with:
One TX-III matching tone cabinet.
Stool.
Pedal board.
Music stand.
Original Yamaha voltage converter.

The good bits:
In good overall condition with minor marks.
All keys/pedals work.
Tone cabinet works and sounds great.
All the controls apart from the ones listed work perfectly.

The bad bits:
One note on the lower orchestra (synthesizer) section occasionally sticks, not sure what the fault is.
Tremolo function doesn't work - it's probably the belt or motor inside the tone cabinet, I use it connected to an amplifier through its separate out so don't use this function.
Sine wave LFO waveshape on the solo synth not working (other waveshapes work fine).

This is an amazing sounding instrument which can layer different types of analog/digital synthesier and organ tones all at once.
Very hard to find and in very nice cosmetic shape.
Cost £27,000 back in 1977!"

Floyd went to Superbooth 23 and all he got was this jute bag +info on Aodyo Anyma Omega, Motor Synth MkII

video upload by

"Here's what I saw / wanted to see at #Superbooth 23, plus some impressions of the event itself. I talked with @AodyoInstruments about their line of hardware modeling synths, Anyma PHI, Sylphyo and #Anyma OMEGA (thanks again for taking so much time to walk through the features!). Also a presentation of the @GamechangerAudio #Motorsynth MKII, which I already filmed last year but never got around to turn into a video.
Please forgive me if I mispronounced names / got them wrong entirely. I lost some of the business cards on the way back. My bad.

Also (not in the video), https://www.manikin-electronic.com/ - they gave me an extensive demo of their Memotron Keyboard, which as a Mellotron clone with a great keyboard. It was super fun to play, but they talked so fast and enthusiastically that I had no time to restart and set up audio recorder and camera. ;-)

Table of contents:
00:00 hello
00:38 getting there, location impressions
02:09 Aodyo Anyma
11:20 more impressions!

Superbooth 2023: Gamechanger Audio Plasma Voice Eurorack module

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to ILya from Gamechanger Audio at Superbooth 2023, who introduced the Motor Synth MKII, which has been in production and available for purchase. Gamechanger Audio also presented a new concept that they have been working on – the Plasma Voice. The concept is a car battery-powered module that generates electrical sounds through the modification of the Plasma Tube Circuit. The interface is intentionally vague as it is still in the experimental stage, but the concept is to create a companion instrument for the Motor Synth that can be used for performances and demonstrations, featuring strange and unconventional sound sources. The Plasma Voice Concept has been designed to generate rhythmical and percussive elements with sound effects and glitchy elements, creating a set of sounds that can be used together with the motor voices.

For more information on the Motor Synth MKII and the Plasma Voice Concept, visit the Gamechanger Audio website."

Korg Berlin Introduces Acoustic Synthesizer Prototype | Superbooth 2023

video upload by Reverb

You might recall this post teasing something new from KORG. Here it is. An acoustic desktop synth. Reminds me of Gamechanger Audio's Motor Synth.

"Korg is gearing up for their Superbooth debut in their hometown of Berlin. They will be showcasing an early prototype of their latest innovation—an acoustic synthesizer that combines the sonic richness of real vibrating bodies with electronic control."

KICK DRUM TRIGGERS MOTOR SYNTH | Oil & Gas at EVIL JOE's

video upload by Gamechanger Audio

"We have a feeling that Tom and Matiss from GAMECHANGER AUDIO may have created the heaviest Synth & Drums band around. Meet OIL & GAS, and the first track they wrote for MOTOR SYNTH MKII and drums, recorded at Evil Joe Barresi's studio in LA.

Notice how the kick drum triggers one of the MOTOR Synth’s voices thus creating a perfect bass line that's on time with every beat. Here's how the setup works:
The bass and lead parts are performed on the MOTOR Synth simultaneously. The lead line is performed on the built-in 8-button keybed and arpeggiator. The bass part sequences are programmed with the built-in sequencer that is being triggered by the kick drum mic connected to the MOTOR Synths audio input.

The MOTOR Synth is in split output mode, where each motor voice is routed through a separate output channel. Each voice is then routed through individual signal paths. The lead voice goes through the BIGSBY Pedal pitch shifter and a stereo delay. The bass voice goes through the PLASMA Coil, LIGHT Pedal, and into a bass amp. The final bass sound is a mix of a DI from the Motor Synth and a mic on the bass cabinet.

Special thanks to Joe “Evil” Barresi and his assistant Jun Murakawa for taking good care of us during the recording in their Pasadena studio.

Motor Synth - Kick Drum

video upload by aftxr (Dave Clay)

"Motor Synth Kick patch I put together. First off, you absolutely get no mechanical noise in the audio output of the Motor Synth. The thing absolutely makes a mechanical noise, but you can't hear it in the audio... So I put a piezo on it so I could capture the racket this glorious thing makes.

Gamechanger probably spent hours trying to make sure those mechanical motors aren't audible, and I just eradicated all that effort and slapped a piezo on the side. Sorry. I really like the noise it makes. But, let's be honest, I just like _noise_."

First Drive of Motor Synth

"It took a year and some, but it's finally here and whirring away. With this sound I was just seeing how well those motors reacted to their speed being modulated by the LFO or quickly turning the scale knob. Both voices are set to the magnetic pickup waveform - the pickups reading the electromagnetic field of those motors. They have a nice biting sound with low end.

It's run through a generous amount of Desmodus Versio reverb. Kick by Basimilus Alter and Plasma Coil. Snare by Kraken and Crucible (Crucible doing the metallic ping).

I love the Motor Synth, not necessarily because it's a great synth, but because it's a piece of art. It's a ridiculous concept, at high speeds it's physically loud, it's just a strange thing. I want to reward people who take on weird things and push boundaries, and Gamechanger Audio really does well at that.

Surprisingly, I hear no noise out of the speakers - it's clean. Which one would think is a good thing, but I'm actually kinda missing the whirring mechanical sound from the recording - so much that I've ordered a piezo contact mic to slap on the side to see if I can actually pick up some of that noise intentionally."

The Cars - "Drive" cover, but it's all #Motorsynth

video upload by

"Here's a cover of the classic 80s synthpop hit, 'Drive' by 'The Cars'.
All sounds are from the #MotorSynth but the drums, those are from the Yamaha #QY70.
If you didn't know, Motor Synth is an electromechanical #synthesizer which creates sounds by spinning 8 discs super fast. You can either use all 8 voices paraphonic or two of them each polyphonic. There's a selection of analog filters & envelopes which I put to good use here.
Due to it's inertia, this synth always is playing glissando ;-)
Given the tech at hand, I didn't even try to match the sound to the original, but more tried to capture it's athmosphere. Sorry for the mediocre karaoke vocal track, but I think it's good enough.
This was super fun and if this gets some views maybe I'll do more (you can suggest songs if you like)
Let's see if this gets a copyright claim.

video upload by sonicstate

"The Motor Synth from Gamechanger Audio has always been a crowd pleaser, since we first saw it at 2017 Winter NAMM. Its a really unusual electro-mechanical way to generate audio - using stepper motors and optical readouts to make oscillators. Its got a unique sound and looks great.

The MKII which we saw in prototype at Superbooth earlier this year, is now ready and shipping, we got a demo of a recent patch from Tom at the booth.

MOTOR SYNTH MK II Sound Examples 2 | Gamechanger Audio

"MOTOR Synth is based on a unique motor oscillator engine - it is a system of eight electro-motors that are able to instantly and precisely change their rotation speed in order to produce musical notes.

Because of the distinct way the motors create wave shapes, MOTOR Synth's sound is certainly in a category of its own. However, the comprehensive sound-shaping features developed by our engineers let you recreate classic synth sounds and even real instruments."
