Dervish D Vangelis Tribute by Paul Schilling

"A tribute to one of my musical Gods, Vangelis. His original comment for this track:

'inspired by the Dervish dancer who by his whirling realises the spiralling of the universe'"

The main synth sounds were created with Arturia Origin and CS-80V3 - mainly all Arturia Origin CS-80 modules, except for the Vangelis harmonica and lead sound, which is the Arturia CS-80V3. The percussion and pad towards the end are the DSI Prophet-6.

"demo of the patch I created for Arturia's CS-80V.

The Blade Runner Blues lead / harmonica patch is one of the most expressive patches Vangelis ever did on the CS-80. Among other things it features sensitive and fine-tuned velocity and aftertouch response, with quite different settings for each of the two synth lines. Since it is not directly derived from the CS-80's preset buttons, as many of his other go-to patches were, and especially because it has so many expressive nuances, it is not a straightforward patch to recreate.

After many hours of fine-tuning every possible parameter on the CS-80V3 and much A/B comparison, this is the closest I have gotten. The pad background was created with the Roland VP-03 strings to emulate Vangelis' gorgeous VP330, and some Rhodes flourishes were added."

Proud to have been part of the sound design team for one of the most exciting new synths and controllers to come out in a long time: Hydrasynth - Digital Wave Morphing Synthesizer with Polyphonic Aftertouch. It has an amazing internal synth engine and can also be used as an affordable poly-AT controller for any synth that is able to receive it. This includes pretty much all DSI / Sequential synths, Deckard's Dream, Kijimi, Xerxes, and of course all kinds of soft synth.

Most of the lead, bass, string and pad sounds are done on the Prophet V, with the exception of Autobahn, which (save the 'KlangPiano' sound) is all Modular V, and features its soft clip/overdrive setting that emulates the Minimoog's overdrive characteristics quite well.

"One of the funnest features of this little magic machine are the Randomize and Chance functions.

In this video I apply different levels of Randomize to a classic TR-808 pattern and a well-known 70s groove and see what new musical and rhythmic ideas come out.

Really impressed with the Play+, the great sound quality, the carefully considered design decisions, and the overall feel of using it…the playfulness it invites. I’m barely scratching the surface of what this thing is capable of, but you have to start somewhere!"

Update: "This is the VP-03 running through the Eventide Blackhole reverb. For this track each note was recorded on a separate track, panned to a different part of the stereo field, then used the faders to emphasize individual notes. 10cc did this in 'I'm Not In Love'."

Synclavier Regen Demo

"A selection of my factory presets for the Regen, with the Hydrasynth set to MPE mode. I was thrilled to be able to work on this wonderful machine.

Plenty of examples of MPE poly-aftertouch. A couple of movie references are thrown in. :)

I like the ease with which you can throw together additive, subtractive and sample layers with this interface, and mold them in various ways. The Regen can sound very warm and organic, as well as a wide digital-sounding spectrum.

All reverb in this demo and other things that sound like FX (chorus etc.) are coming from the Regen."
