A journey into nothingness. In August I performed two jams with the Sequential Prophet 10, Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water, Catalinbread Belle Epoch, and Chase Bliss CXM-1978. One was improvisational and the other sequenced. This is the improvisational piece, which feels spacious and contemplative. 🌌

I used this pedal setup for some gigs this fall, with my new friend David Lacalamita. I swapped the bulkier P10 for the OB6, with it's onboard effects, seq/arp and other features. The improvisations turned out pretty awesome. ⛅

I've released my new album "Airplane Mode" here on 📺 in three parts.
Part 3 is the final installment of the album gapless.
Final masters of each song, with some new experimental techniques regarding connecting two or more videos with a morphing video mask. It is taking heavy processing power to render these effects on the video, but I am enjoying the results 😍"

Streetscape and OP-1 Field 🌿 Excruciating Minutiae

"🏢A streetscape in San Pancho Mexico with Soundtrack🏡

I was lucky to film so much on my Honeymoon in Mexico. There was beautiful movement all around. In some cases I captured sound using my Fuji X-T30 and Oade Brothers micro mics that I have had for many years and pulled out for the trip. 🎤

I made a piece of music focusing on the OP-1 Field string synth. I pre planned using the Chase Bliss/Meris CXM 1978 on the final mix, so did not overdo the layering. I used the endless sequencer to create some repeating patterns and the mono delay to add some slow repeats or in some layers the spring reverb to each recorded sound. I used the Studio tape emu for the first time. I have been finding the noise/hiss on the other emu's compounds in a not so flattering way. This is something I hope TE refines in a future update. Tape his should not compound with each track recorded onto it, and it would be nice if the hiss level could be controlled.

I used the new FW update to the field with velocity sensitivity built into each sequence and I used the new record panning feature while committing ideas. The bass was performed live on the keyboard into the field while playing the other layers through the CXM 1978 and my outboard into the DAW. In Reaper, I added EQ, compression and filtering. Filterfreak creates a unique rhythmic pattern that adds a lot of interest to the high frequencies of the piece. The street sounds were added once I had decided this shot would fit the best with the music. Some verb and volume automation was added to the streetscape sounds. While mixing I accidentally sped up the OP-1 tracks in reaper by about 20% due to changing the tempo, but after noting this and comparing to the original speed, I liked the faster version more and decided to keep it.

📀Prophet 10 & MFB Tanzbar Jam💾Unhandled Exception

This jam is over a year old but I had not found the right spot to release it earlier in 2022. I made some final adjustments to the mix and video now, and I still really enjoy the piece and the energy of it⚡️

The jam was initially set up using the prophet, keystep, tanzbar, and the Strymon Magneto, Monsoon, and Meris Polymoon as effects pedals. The main and secondary prophet melodies are engaged on the keystep live on separate tracks in order to mute/unmute them. The "bass line" is coming from the Tanzbar toms controlled by the Keystep. Wanted to keep it longer so some additional layers of Prophet pads and ambiance were added in Reaper to spice up the arrangement.

🌸TE OP-1 Field Hypnotic piano loops🌛Coma Toes

"Hi 🌨

I hope you are all weathering the change of seasons! Here's a new piece I created on the OP-1 Field. I sampled a short phrase played on my cheap upright piano. The sample was looped and pitched in various ways to create a soundscape. ❄️

Some pitch modulated and nitro filtered loops were recorded onto the vintage 4-track tape simulation. Mother reverb was used quite liberally on the final result. After filling the 4-tracks, some pitched and reversed versions of the sample were softly added in the middle of the piece. 🪢

This track is fairly hissy on full range systems, but it still sounds very nice. I should probably try the highest fidelity tape simulation to reduce hiss, but the tracks I've made feel really full of character. I have no doubt some of the hiss is coming from the sampling of the piano. I'm sure I could do that better with practice.

This piece is coming off the OP-1 as a mix. 📼 I stored the 4 tracks in case I need them later, but essentially just mastered the mix after recording it into my DAW through the analogue listed below. The length of the piece was not edited. Some clicks were removed in the DAW from my tape edits. I added a bit of pumping compression on the beat as the piece progresses. I added a flowing bass from the Korg Arp Odyssey. 🎛

I also used a bit of Output Portal to add a layer of intrigue and shimmer way in the back that only appears as the piece progresses to the climax. Finally I used the AudioThing Miniverb to gradually open the high frequencies in the piece towards the climax, and then filter them away again for some drama. 🎭

The visuals were captured during my recent honeymoon in Mexico. I feel very lucky to have experienced the trip 😊"

🍃The Approaching Stillness🌳 ~ TE OP-1 Field Ambient

Here's another piece I created on the OP-1 Field in the first few weeks of ownership, and before having to charge the battery for the 1st time! 🌿

For this track I used the cassette tape (porta simulation) 📼 I found it a bit tricky to balance distortion and grit with hiss and input level. This track is fairly hissy on full range systems, but it still sounds very nice. I may end up preferring the vintage 4 track as a compromise between lo-fi and fidelity.

I have enjoyed messing with the various sequencers and the modulation section. This track has a healthy dose of the mother reverb, but the master effect is the mono delay, which in this track is set to repeat many times. As it's coming up in the center position it almost adds a 5th sound source to the 4 tracks. 🔉

This piece is coming off the OP-1 as a mix. I stored the 4 tracks in case I need them later, but essentially just mastered the mix after recording it into my DAW through the analogue listed below. The piece is as performed in this case, with no edits. I want to see what the OP-1 field alone is capable of 🧨

A month or so ago I visited a friend's farm and took some shots that I really loved with the Fuji X-T30. I decided to pair these with an outdoor ambient experiment featuring the looping mode on the Strymon Magneto 🎧

The Sequential OB-6 is fed into the Monsoon (Mutable Clouds Copy) for a bit of texture, then into the Strymon Magneto in sound-on-sound looper mode. The dry signal is fairly low and the loop is quite long (I believe more than 30 seconds). The loop is slowly decaying and degrading. It's such a slow degradation that my previous performance is a bed under the final performance when it starts. I was going for something lazy, hazy, and noisy.

For some polish, the CXM 1978 is run in an effects loop from the modular on a static and drifty setting. It was a joy to perform this. I just had to be careful not to play any dissonant notes which would then be looped indefinitely 🤯

I performed and filmed the jam on my back porch. I have been loving setting up outside and creating with the sounds of nature around me🌱

⌛Time Past ⌚ ~ First OP-1 Field Jam

"Hello 🏄🏼‍♂️

My Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field arrived two weeks ago. 🍾

I have never had or used one of these in the past and I'm building lots of thoughts on it, most of which are positive! Overall it's a super inspiring machine if you are keyboard based for being creative wherever you are. 🌿

I started exploring it by building this track. One small gripe I have is the lack of crossfades when editing with cuts, which is very simple to do in a DAW and remove all clicks and pops. There is really no reason that cuts to the tape should create clicks and pops. My main synth loop on this had a click in the edit at each loop, but when I built the other tracks, I used some more savvy techniques to cut the loops as far from sounds as possible, to prevent clicks and pops. This did work well and when I brought everything into the computer, I only had to fix my one loop. 🤲🏼 That said, it's a bit cumbersome to work around loop points to get the result I want.

The OP-1 so far is a really really fun way to be creative. It was still a blast despite any quirks. If you can accept of the limitations as just something to work around. I used the vintage 4-track simulation for this. 📼

This is the Sequential OB6 with some eq and compression at the mix stage. Recorded directly into my Fuji X-T30 initially, then mixed in Reaper. The internal delay effects were used to cascade against each other 🔊

I've always enjoyed this instrument, and Oberheim is on the brain recently due to the new OB-X8. I had very slight GAS for the new Obie but have quelled that by reminding myself how much I love both the sound and portability of the OB6."

"Hi 🌊

I'm jamming with the Chase Bliss/Meris CXM 1978 & Fairfield Shallow Water while bringing some of my tools out into the light of day for a dust off. 🌤 These pedals are fairly new to me and I'm liking them so far. What do you think? 🌿

The mighty Juno 60 is patched into the Shallow Water in mono, then straight into the CXM and then to my Fuji X-T30 which is recording both the audio and video.

I'm using the arp on the Juno to keep my hands more free for tweaking.

This is mixed in reaper through my standard mixbus and a small amount of additional compression/eq/saturation was added.

Initially part of some experiments feeding the prophet 10 into the modular, this took on a bigger life after the capture of my snowy pear tree 🌳

The modular video captures the tweaks during the capture of the arp pattern. The arp sequence was altered behind the camera a couple times. The Monsoon (Clouds) created extra notes a 5th down in a different pattern. A few layers including drums were added in reaper after the initial performance."
