Getting to know the Roland MC-707 (jam and thoughts)

Published on Oct 22, 2019 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the feature set and sounds of the Roland MC-707. Overall, I find it to have great synth sounds and some fun performance features (knobs for filter and assignable parameters, master-level effects including DJFX from SP-404, and greatly expanded scatter effects) but also to have some odd design choices (not frontloading the parameters you want, distinctly unmusical scatter presets, thousands of pointless and bad synth presets) and some unfortunate drawbacks (voice stealing, most notably). Overall, a super fun all-in-one groovebox, but I'm still pining for Novation to make a proper successor to the Circuit.

Roland MC-707 — six synth tracks (noisy pad, arp, lead, bass, 2x clean pads), two drum tracks (regular and filtered), sequencing, and effects

Sequences written over the last couple weeks, performed and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

Roland MC-707 demo (example tracks)

Published on Oct 13, 2019 Hunart©

"Hi Everyone!

I`ve had a chance to try out the Roland MC-707 groovebox. I`ve had just 4 hours to learn the basics and record something so I`ve decided to record three basic examples using just the built in content. No external EQ, compression or FX, just some limiting on the whole material.

Feel free to ask any questions!

Enjoy!

Roland MC-707 Groovebox With Sampling

Published on Oct 4, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Roland's new MC-707 is a powerful groovebox. The MC-707 features 8 tracks that can each be full drum kits, a synthesizer or looper. The MC-707 can put together full tracks with its powerful sequencing and effects. To test out the sampler we decided to sample some of our own videos and a few others.

The MC-707 comes with 80 drum kits including the classic Roland TR machines. The synth engine has 64 voice polyphony with four oscillators per voice that feature both analog style waveforms and PCM samples.

MC-707とMC-101買いました!

For the first time in about 20 years? Wonder?
Revitalized groove box! I bought it immediately and tried it for the time being! The review is next time!

I believe the MC-808, released in 2006, was the last Roland box to have the Groovebox moniker. The MV-8800, released in 2007, was a "Production Studio." Source: Groovebox on Wikipedia (someone needs to add the Synthstrom Deluge to their list).

"The Roland MC-707 GROOVEBOX has everything electronic music producers need to create a song or perform a live set without a computer. The MC-707 is armed with an eight-track sequencer optimized for fluid production, our latest deep synthesis engine, a powerful sampler, massive effects palette and 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.

The MC-707’s eight-track sequencer is made for today's electronic-focused music styles and ever-evolving subgenres. The TR-REC step sequencer is just like those found on classic Roland drum machines, perfect for building rhythm parts quickly. There are also 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.

The MC-707 features our latest sound engine, which fuses virtual analog and modern PCM. It’s flexible, powerful, and lets you dig deep into its sonic capabilities. It has the sounds of legendary Roland rhythm machines and synthesizers that are the foundation of electronic music—including the TR-808, TR-909, TB-303, JUNO-106, and SH-101. But the MC-707 also looks forward, with modern digital and hybrid sounds perfect for creating future classics—today.

In addition to its deep synthesis engine, the MC-707 has a powerful sampler with on-the-fly recording that synchronizes to your project's tempo and works as an updateable and expandable platform that never gets stale. Keep things fresh with new loops, one-shots, phrases, and synth sounds—all available online."

"The Roland MC-101 GROOVEBOX combines premium-quality synthesizer and drum sounds, samples, patterns and effects in a compact four-track sequencer that’s go-everywhere portable. Create whenever, and wherever, inspiration strikes with this pocket production studio and add performance-ready tracks to your DAWless or compact synthesizer setup.

The MC-101 has a four-track sequencer optimized for beatmakers, producers and mobile music makers creating today's electronic and dance-oriented music. You can use the 16 ultra-sensitive RGB pads to create drum, bass, and synthesizer patterns and create your own original music. It's your musical playground, where you can freely combine loops and one-shots with melodic phrases including your own imported audio recordings and MIDI sequences. Compose and trigger clips, rearrange, re-sample, record your knob movements, and more.

On top of that, add the Roland sounds that have defined electronic and dance genres for over forty years. Legendary instruments like the TR-808, TR-909, JUNO-106 and SH-101 are all here, ready to replicate classic sounds or be combined, tweaked, and processed into entirely new sounds.

With the MC-101's massive effects palette, your music sounds polished and fully-produced. Each track has independent effects processors with a huge number of variations. The lush chorus brings depth to pads and other synth sounds. Delays and reverbs create evocative spaces and add movement to delicate sequences. Overdrive, distortion, and amp simulation add grit and intensity to synths, guitars, drums and more. You can also run your entire mix through master effects like filters, bit-crushers and a master bus compressor that glues it all together with punch and clarity."

"This is a dynamite little beast that was originally intended as an add-on voice and sequencer for the SH-101. It's pre-MIDI, but has 5-pin DIN Sync connections on the back for wiring together with other Roland products of the era (TB-303, TR-808, TR-707, etc). The two sequencer channels control an external device and the internal synth, but there are two sets of CV and Gate outputs so both can control external synths if desired. There are also CV and Gate inputs for playing the internal synth voice with an external keyboard.

As you can see from the photos, it's in absolutely immaculate condition, and comes with original box and power supply."

Roland TR-707 & TB-303 Walkthrough

Published on Dec 13, 2018 Alex Ball

"One final tutorial to round out this batch before I take a break. This time we're having a look at two classics; the Roland TR-707 and the Roland TB-303. This video gives you the basic principles to get started.

Along with the TR-727, TR-909, TR-808, SH-101 and MC-202, these machines played an integral part in dance music that emerged in the late 80s, most notably Acid and Techno...

Roland MC-303 Groovebox

Published on Sep 12, 2018 tiergrinder

"Roland MC-303 Groovebox was my second "synth" that I ever got, and I think I got it around 2001. Others were buying MC-505 and MC-307's back then, but I had to settle for second hand MC-303.

Rolands MC-303 has got it's fair share of bashing during all these years, but there is still something that I really like about it. I have always thought that MC-303's drum samples were good and it had better drum kits that following MC-307 and 505. Especially the 808 sounds have great presence. Kicks and toms boom, Snares and claps snap like they should and hihats sizzle bright.

TR-909 sounds are good too, the toms have that round full sound and snares and kicks pound like they should. Maybe the hihats are bit weaker, but thats made up with great ride and crash cymbals. On top of these the MC-303 has tons of great percussions from 707 and 727 drum machines and lots of acoustic drum sounds for break beats, jungle and drum'n'bass. And it has that classic TR-recording in its sequencer, where you can tap the beat realtime or use the classix X0X style programming.

This first simple demo shows some of the better preset patterns and templates that are hidden in underneath all that late 90's crazy techno and goa trance stuff."
