"The Roland MC-707 GROOVEBOX has everything electronic music producers need to create a song or perform a live set without a computer. The MC-707 is armed with an eight-track sequencer optimized for fluid production, our latest deep synthesis engine, a powerful sampler, massive effects palette and 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.

The MC-707’s eight-track sequencer is made for today's electronic-focused music styles and ever-evolving subgenres. The TR-REC step sequencer is just like those found on classic Roland drum machines, perfect for building rhythm parts quickly. There are also 16 ultra-sensitive pads for playing or sequencing drum parts, melodic basslines, or polyphonic chord progressions.

The MC-707 features our latest sound engine, which fuses virtual analog and modern PCM. It’s flexible, powerful, and lets you dig deep into its sonic capabilities. It has the sounds of legendary Roland rhythm machines and synthesizers that are the foundation of electronic music—including the TR-808, TR-909, TB-303, JUNO-106, and SH-101. But the MC-707 also looks forward, with modern digital and hybrid sounds perfect for creating future classics—today.

In addition to its deep synthesis engine, the MC-707 has a powerful sampler with on-the-fly recording that synchronizes to your project's tempo and works as an updateable and expandable platform that never gets stale. Keep things fresh with new loops, one-shots, phrases, and synth sounds—all available online."

"The Roland MC-101 GROOVEBOX combines premium-quality synthesizer and drum sounds, samples, patterns and effects in a compact four-track sequencer that’s go-everywhere portable. Create whenever, and wherever, inspiration strikes with this pocket production studio and add performance-ready tracks to your DAWless or compact synthesizer setup.

The MC-101 has a four-track sequencer optimized for beatmakers, producers and mobile music makers creating today's electronic and dance-oriented music. You can use the 16 ultra-sensitive RGB pads to create drum, bass, and synthesizer patterns and create your own original music. It's your musical playground, where you can freely combine loops and one-shots with melodic phrases including your own imported audio recordings and MIDI sequences. Compose and trigger clips, rearrange, re-sample, record your knob movements, and more.

On top of that, add the Roland sounds that have defined electronic and dance genres for over forty years. Legendary instruments like the TR-808, TR-909, JUNO-106 and SH-101 are all here, ready to replicate classic sounds or be combined, tweaked, and processed into entirely new sounds.

With the MC-101's massive effects palette, your music sounds polished and fully-produced. Each track has independent effects processors with a huge number of variations. The lush chorus brings depth to pads and other synth sounds. Delays and reverbs create evocative spaces and add movement to delicate sequences. Overdrive, distortion, and amp simulation add grit and intensity to synths, guitars, drums and more. You can also run your entire mix through master effects like filters, bit-crushers and a master bus compressor that glues it all together with punch and clarity."

Nerd On The Wire DrumKid "aleatoric" Drum Machine

Published on Aug 22, 2019 Nerd On The Wire

Nerd On The Wire also brought us the Synth Guitar for DesignSpark Summer of Sound Challenge, and PolyMod open source modular synthesizer for Hackaday 2018.

"DrumKid is an 'aleatoric' drum machine, meaning it uses random numbers to determine the rhythm and sound of a drum beat. It comes in a handheld, battery-powered unit, designed for live performance.

This is my entry video for the 2019 Hackaday Prize - the Hackaday project page can be found here: https://hackaday.io/project/164521-dr...

This project is open source - all design files can be found here: https://github.com/mattybrad/drumkid"

"Drum machine are ubiquitous in modern music, but playing them live presents a challenge. When playing electronic rhythms live, whether using a drum machine or a laptop, it can often appear that a musician is simply pressing "play" on a backing track, removing much of the perceived spontaneity of a live performance.

My drum machine, DrumKid, aims to tackle this problem by using a variety of controls to alter a drumbeat live, using randomly generated drum hits which augment the original beat. Rather than being designed as a pre-programmed backing instrument, DrumKid aims to be a playable instrument in its own right, with continuously adjustable controls that work well in a live setting. My intention was to create an engaging, interactive device that, like any musical instrument, can be mastered over time with practice.

DrumKid is an open-source, hackable product based around an ATmega328 chip, as found in an Arduino Uno. The final product features a minimalist design consisting of a single PCB with buttons, knobs, and LEDs mounted on one side, and all other components mounted on the other side. Two laser-cut sections are used to protect the electronics.

I now have a fully working prototype of DrumKid, and I am happy with the audio quality, playability, aesthetics, durability, reliability, and battery life. I am planning to make a small, initial batch of DrumKid units in September to distribute to musicians for testing. After any necessary updates to the PCB design and/or firmware, I hope to build a larger batch of units and launch DrumKid for sale around November/December 2019.

DrumKid can also be constructed as a breadboard/stripboard project using an Arduino Uno - see the build instructions for details."

Announcing UNO Drum analog/PCM drum machine
UNO Drum & UNO Synth performance
UNO Drum Features Overview
UNO Drum Tutorial: Editing Section

UNO Drum Tutorial: Play/Program Section

Update: some pics and details via IK Multimedia:

"UNO Drum is the ultimate beat creation station for anyone and everyone to create warm, punchy, high-quality, and inspiring grooves. Made in collaboration with Italian analog specialist Soundmachines, UNO Drum follows the acclaimed UNO Synth, combining massive analog tone with digital flexibility and convenience.

UNO Drum makes it easy to program and perform using the widest sonic palette to add professional drum grooves to your music.

12 killer sounding drum elements

UNO Drum offers 6 true analog drum sounds for the warmest, richest, and most dynamic drum sounds possible. This includes 2 different kick drums, snares, claps, and hi-hats - the core kit that characterizes the most iconic analog drum sounds of all time.

Plus, added PCM elements (with 54 samples to choose from) are available for additional sonic flavors. Toms, rims, cowbells, rides, and crash cymbals help you create complex, unique, and full rhythm tracks. UNO Drum lets you use up to 12 elements in total between analog and digital sounds (11 voice polyphony).

All of the above can be stored and recalled on the fly with 100 drum kit presets, all pre-programmed and fully editable at your leisure. It’s a breeze to find an IK inspired kit that catches your ear and tweak to fit your taste, or create your custom kits from scratch. Make something you like and save and store for later use – UNO Drum is ready to recall your beats whenever you are.

UNO Drum also offers 3 master effects: analog drive and compressor and a stutter effect. Turn up the drive to make your grooves hit harder with an aggressive edge. Add compression to make your tracks tighter, gluing together your rhythm with a fat and heavy punch. Like what you hear? Good. Your settings will save right with your kit for instant recall. Stutter offers adjustable depth, from subtle tremolos to full-on slices, to create different feeling sounds and grooves.

Wider sonic palette

UNO Drum lets you freely swap analog and digital elements, so you never have to feel limited by pre-set combinations. Between the analog engine designed by SoundMachines and samples drawn from IK’s award-winning SampleTank sound & groove workstation, the diverse collection of sounds encourages fresh ideas and unique creation."

Bitty - Pocket-sized Drum Machine and Synthesizer by Curious Sound Objects

Published on Apr 30, 2019 Curious Sound Objects

Currently on Kickstarter

via Arduino.cc

"There are a wide variety of ways to create electronic music. For a capable machine that fits in the palm of your hand and is loud enough to use outdoors, however, it’s hard to imagine a battery-powered device cooler than Bitty from Curious Sound Objects.

The pocket-sized drum machine and synthesizer, currently on Kickstarter, was prototyped using an Arduino Nano and will be fully Arduino-compatible when released. This means that in addition to changing the sound and interface around with readily-available sound packs—which include Theremin Bitty, Techno Bitty, Basement Bitty, Trap Bitty, Lofi Bitty, and Beach Bitty—it can be programmed with the Arduino IDE. The device can even run sound software written for other Arduino boards.

Bitty features four sample trigger buttons, a pair of knobs, and a speaker. Designed for entry-level EDM enthusiasts and studio musicians alike, you can play the drums and melodies manually, as well as trigger patterns to produce dance music or hip hop beats. These can be chosen via the left knob, while the right knob handles pitch, note selection, and arpeggiation."
