The Division Department 01/IV & Elektron Digitone

Nightlife Electronics

"The 01/IV by The Division Department is a four voice analog drum brain that takes inspiration from classics like the Simmons and Syncussion as well as the Roland TR series. It's super versatile and sounds really good! Here we have it being sequenced by the Elektron Digitone. The 01/IV is providing all the percussion elements, the Digitone all the melodic stuff.

Dark ambient music: Fear Has Brought You Here

Richard DeHove

"Gloomy, anguished track featuring the 01/IV [The Division Department] doing drums and the repeating bass squelch, me bashing metal together (then later pitched down), sampled unhappy crowd noises, and the Sub37 doing all the rest. Wasn't sure about the genre. 'Dark Ambient' was what I settled on although perhaps it has too much thump and clunk for anything claiming to be ambient? Maybe Electro-Industrial, Electronica, Dark Wave or even synth wave? All genre advice appreciated.

The track was written at DubDub studios and mastered by Scott Craggs at Old Colony Mastering.

If the metal clunk sounds appeal then you can download 16 free samples, most of which were used in this track:

A full pack of 60 samples is available at the same link for $4.

If you like the track it's available at all the usual music providers, Spotify, Apple, Amazon and Deezer being some of many:

Division Department 01/IV Distorted with Boss BX-8 and Sequenced with Patterning 2

Published on May 12, 2020 NoizeHack

"I got to borrow a Division Department 01/IV drum machine so I used it to overdrive the channels on an old Boss BX-8 mixer. The Boss BX-8 is great, it is like 8 or 10 distortion pedals in one. I added another layer of distortion and compression by sending the effect send out back into an overdriven channel.

The iPad app Patterning 2 was used to sequence the O1/IV with midi.

Oh and of course there is so much bass the camera turns to jello every time there is a kick drum, this is just for simulating the experience of having your vision get all weird every time the kick hits while you are at a club with function ones and you stand too close to the subs after having a few drinks.

Division Department 01/IV Four Voice Analog Drum Synth

Published on Mar 9, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"The Division Department 01/IV is a distinctly open-ended drum synth, providing a clean slate for creating all sorts of analog percussion tones. With no on-board sequencing, 01/IV is more about classic percussive sound design, leaving the control choices up to the user, playable via the per-channel trigger buttons or external MIDI control.

Unlike many drum synths, 01/IV features four identical channels. Where other instruments might make distinctions between the purpose of each channel (kick, snare, etc.), 01/IV instead provides access to raw synthesis elements to allow users to sculpt their own tones, be they familiar or completely alien. Each voice provides a choice of sound source (triangle, saw, noise, hi-hat noise), filter type (lowpass, bandpass, highpass), and modulation controls, providing access to everything from classic analog drum tones to inter-voice FM.

By providing this open-ended approach to sound design on each of its four channels, the 01/IV can seamlessly morph from percussive to melodic roles, from intense FM to clean, rubbery toms, from understated rhythms to in-your-face blasts. And best of all, the one-knob-per-function interface and built-in trigger buttons make this a pleasure to play, encouraging real-time exploration in a way uncommon for modern drum machines.

The Division Department 01/IV ANALOG DRUM SYNTH

The first batch of the new 01/IV ANALOG DRUM SYNTH will be limited to a run of 50.

"01/IV by The Division Department is a 4-channel analog drum synthesizer capable of synthesizing a wide palette of sounds. From usual drum hits like kicks, toms, snares, claps, hi-hats and cymbals to unusual and complex sounds like drones and weird modulated creations. The provided MIDI implementation lets the 01/IV be triggered via MIDI, which makes it a powerful piece of equipment in a setup.

The concept of 01/IV is unique as it has four identical voice channels with all the power of synthesizing various type of drum sounds. Any channel can play a kick, a cymbal, toms and congas, or even a bassline. Channels can even be combined, can modulate each others in pairs (FM) or can be layered to form complex sounds. All these achieved with a flexible routing system composed of slide switches and carefully calibrated synthesizer elements.

01/IV inherited genes from legendary drum machines and drum synthesizers like the Pollard Syndrum, the Roland 808 & 909, and Pearl Syncussion SY-1. It has a true analog audio path, but also added a very flexible digital modulation system of a multi-function LFO, ramp and retrigger generator.

Key Features:

60 panel controls: Knobs - Switches - Triggers Buttons
4 Voices - Chromatic via midi
Drone Mode
Midi note triggers and partial Midi CC controls
Mix / Individual outputs
Compact size / Light weight
