Supercritical Synthesizers Officially Introduces the 16 voice Demon Core Oscillator & Expander

You might remember the teaser video for the Supercritical Synthesizer posted Demon Core Oscillator posted here.

The official announcement follows.

"Introducing Supercritical Synthesizers and the 16 voice Demon Core Oscillator eurorack module

A new Finnish synthesizer manufacturer Supercritical Synthesizers is releasing their first product, the 16 Voice Demon Core Oscillator. The eurorack module is essentially 16 analog oscillators with digital control packed into one 12HP module, with a number of ways to spread, stack and modulate the individual pitches. The companion 8HP module Demon Core Expander allows polyphonic control of the 16 voices via MIDI and CV, bringing versatile polyphony to the eurorack world.

The DCO module offers 16 oscillators with either sawtooth or pulse waveforms which can be stacked in unison or in octaves To give life to the oscillators the module features a static detune spread control ranging from subtle to extreme supersaw qualities and the Core Stability control which introduces VCO-like pitch drift and jitter, allowing the module to sound like 80’s big polyphonic VCO machines in unison at moderate settings, or like a collection of misbehaving oscillators at extreme settings. It also features a 1V/oct pitch input, a very intuitive concert pitch tuner, CVs for linear FM, spread, detune and PWM. Further, a time sync input synchronizes the whole stack of oscillators phases, which can be used with detuning to produce massive bass or brass synthesis.

The Demon Core Expander module introduces polyphonic control of the DCO. The stacks can be divided between up to 16 polyphonic voices via MIDI or four 1V/oct inputs with attenuator. The oscillator can be set in continuous streaming mode or in MIDI gating mode with an ADSR envelope for each polyphonic voice. The time sync can be also triggered via MIDI for each voice and the phase sync time can be adjusted from past to future. The expander provides a handy MIDI interface and some extra CV controls.

Main module tech specs:
12hp, skiff friendly with 25mm depth.
120mA +12V and 20mA -12V
16 configurable voices (octave, stacks)
Saw and pulse waves with PWM ranging from 0-100%
Coarse tune for 6 octave range with half-step increments
Fine tune for ± half step range
A blinking tuning indicator for finding C note in every octave and A440 fine tuning

Introducing Supercritical Redshift 6 - Six voice analog Variable Character Synthesizer

video upload by Supercritical Synthesizers

"Supermassively dense analog oscillator combined with a chameleon analog filter with versatile gain staging. Now sixfold.

Redshift 6 combines technology from the company’s previous products, the Demon Core Oscillator and the Neutron Flux Filter. Each of the six voices features a DCO with analog waveforms generated under digital control. The filter core is an analog 4-pole state variable filter also digitally controlled to act like almost any classic vintage synthesizer filter and more. In addition to the oscillators and filters, Redshift 6 has all the features expected of a modern synth - plenty of modulators, flexible voice routing, multitimbrality, MPE, and DSP effects.

Redshift 6’s idea is something that is wrapped in the moniker “Variable Character Synthesizer”. Each voice’s analog path regarding tuning, gain staging, filter, and more is under strict digital control. Redshift 6 has as lush and warm sweet spot inspired by the analog polysynth tradition, but it can also cover the full range from almost digitally sterile and clean to distorted misbehavior and beyond. No modeling here - it’s all analog until the bypassable stereo DSP effects processor.

The oscillator, already road-tested in the Demon Core Oscillator eurorack module, is featured in each of the six voices. The oscillator has multiple tricks up its sleeve, each one wrapped as an Engine for the user to choose between. Traditional twin oscillator engines, supersaw engines, flanging phase sync engines, and transistor organ engines are all powerful modes in user-friendly ways that are easily controllable and modulatable.

Redshift 6’s six voices can be configured in plenty of ways. Choose between true six-voice polyphony, classic vintage poly dual layer mode with 3+3 voices, six individual voices each with their own patch and physical output, or any combination of the above. Each of the six voices can also operate as a paraphonic voice with up to 16 note paraphony. Additionally, multiple filters can be chained by routing audio from one voice to another.

The form factor of Redshift 6 is a modern, compact desktop device with a 2.7-inch color screen. Menu diving is reduced to a minimum, with quick navigation via the shortcut button grid. A selection of familiar synth controls are featured on the front panel. A macro mode is included with six user-assignable controls. The back panel features main audio outputs with a DSP effects processor and four auxiliary voice outputs.

One of the major design principles of Redshift 6 is to have a versatile and capable analog platform and a flexible UI for new Engines, easily updateable via software updates.

Supercritical Synthesizers - Cable Salad

video by Supercritical Synthesizers

"Lush. Polyphonic. Very lush and polyphonic.

Four Demon Core Oscillators and four Neutron Flux Filters wired with stereo outputs. Four envelopes and some stereo modulation via the Genki Wave ring. MIDI split to four CV/Gates.

No chorus. Just a touch of Valhalla Room.

Cable salad. Definitely needs some Parmigiano Reggio and olive oil. Does it add more lush?"

Superbooth 20HE: Supercritical Synthesizers Neutron Flux Filter

Published on Apr 26, 2020 sonicstate

"Supercritical Synthesizers released their Demon Core Oscillator last year at Superbooth, so we were keen to catch up with them at this years Superbooth Home Edition to see their new stereo filter the Neutron Flux Filter.

The Neutron Flux Filter is an analog, stereo, digitally controlled filter. It does not model but is can be adjusted to have the character of various vintage filters. In the future it will have user banks in which some more exotic filter responses can be uploaded to via audio files. The unit has a stereo in stereo out and or you can connect them in series and have a mono 8 pole filter.

This is the first working prototype. Some visual and feature changes might happen still. All sound that is heard is directly from the Demon Core Oscillator through the Neutron Flux Filter raw."

Low pH - Supercritical Neutron Flux Filter

Supercritical Synthesizers

"Have a look at my mini case! I built this 58hp 6U case by myself and tried to build as efficient setup as possible. Upper row is a greatest hits platter of self-built digital SMD excercises and the lower portion handles the Supercritical stuff.

Here I do some sour stuff. I’ve hacked some old Ornaments & Crime beta version to have the awesome Logarhythm 303 random sequencer. The envelopes for the filter are provided by a tiny Peaks, Kick by another one. Antumbra Knit has the hats.

The Supercritical Neutron Flux filter handles a single saw wave. It is first used in the regular Sour 3-pole mode. After that I patch it mono-in-stereo-out with the dual VCA. The stereo control is used for the spread effect. Then, I switch the 8-pole series mode and use the left half of the filter for filtering and the right half as a flat filter with the boost for distorting it.

Later I add some more waves from the demon core and set the filter to Mean mode. It has some different distorting characters in the pole settings.

Distort everything.

Introducing SUPERCRITICAL Neutron Flux 8 pole Variable Character Filter

Supercritical Synthesizers

"The new Supercritical “Neutron Flux” 8 Pole Variable Character Filter is a 12hp skiff friendly Eurorack filter module with a stereo analog core and digital control over it. The digital control allows the core to be shaped almost endlessly, taking on the character of almost any classic filter, and gives the filter the ability to explore sounds that have never been heard before.

The controls are familiar filter module controls (cutoff, bipolar FM, mode, drive) with some added spice and no complexity. The new features come in with these controls:

Character: This control blends between five vintage influenced classic filter characters: Fat, Crisp, Liquid, Sour and Mean. Coming later in a firmware update, the Neutron Flux will also have two user banks for more specialized filter characters which can be replaced via audio update.

Overdrive: You can switch on the drive circuit for a +20dB boost and have the drive pot sweep from clean via warm saturation to extremely hard distortion.

Stereo: This control spreads the cutoff between L and R channels and induces drift. This way a mono signal can be split into wide stereo.

Two 4 pole filter cores: These can be run in stereo, mono to stereo or chained as a 8 pole mono filter for almost LPG-like steep slope. Both of them have their own drive circuits so you can have the overdrive stage in the front, in between or both.

The module can be used in many different ways. It can do classic LP/HP/BP filtering. It can self-oscillate with different waveforms. It can provide analog warmth and it can process audio from your DAW. It can act as a stereo distortion. It can spread your mono signal to a wide spatial stereo soundscape. It can do formants and other wild characters. It can do audio-rate deep FM (1V/oct and FM CV’s are all analog). It can behave nicely or get out of control.

It can do almost anything that an analog filter could ever do. Combined in a single unit.

The filter is priced at €495 and will ship in October.

The circular logo is designed by Tomi Leppänen http://tomileppanen.com

International House of Baguettes - A Supercritical Neutron Flux Piece

Supercritical Synthesizers

"We’re working on the yellow and green bank of characters (which can be used for the user downloadable characters in the future) to be released as a firmware update. We’re creating characters that aren’t that classic/traditional or go really overboard. One of these ideas was this phaser-y character which can be used in stereo.

This character was inspired by Jean-Michel Jarre and his Eminent 310 sounds with the EHX Small Stone phaser. JMJ is one of our biggest heroes and a huge influence on the Supercritical sound.

The stereo control is heavily featured in this one. The zero point of the stereo control was moved in the middle in the later stages of development. Thankfully so! It can be used in many ways: tuning the oscillator cores, doing stereo tremolo stuff and here, doing this sweeping stereo phaser-like animation. In some characters we might make it do something very weird. Let’s see.

The pad is done with the DCO, the drums are 909 samples and the bass is from Logic Retro Synth. Of course we have to do some cheesy sidechaining because why not!

Bruce Lee Spice - A Supercritical Neutron Flux piece

Supercritical Synthesizers

"'Bruce Lee Spice'

Couple times a year, we make this awesome chili sauce with Timo. I call it Lee spice. Or Lie spice of the Lie algebra of the Lie group, as Timo calls it. Ask him why. It has really hot and fine chili powder, some szechuan pepper and sesame seeds. First you heat some oil as hot as it gets (without setting everything on fire) and then roasting the dry ingredients with it. Pour and mix. Never gonna eat tacos without it.

This bassline is an ode to that spice. The Neutron Flux is set on Fat mode which is our take on the transistor ladder’s characteristic. The Model D is of course the best one there is for this use but we added a couple of interesting features.

The basic four pole mode has some traditional crunch and resonance but the one and three pole modes have some handy features. Left channel has a normal resonance (without bass compensation) but the right doesn’t. Halfway through, I’ve split a mono signal into both cores (normalled from the left jack) and then summed them back into mono. That’s the Thriller trick. Michael, Greg, Quincy and Bruce needed two Minimoogs in parallel to do that.

The clip features also the eight pole mode. That means two four pole ladders in series. A kick in the guts like Bruce Lee.

Oh yeah, go listen to KNOWER and Louis Cole. The weather report says that their funk is searing hot.

Mono Drum Widening with the Supercritical Neutron Flux Filter

video by Supercritical Synthesizers

"Here I have a drum patch going where I used couple noise sources and a Clouds Spectral Madness to synthesize a weird noise which I ran trough a mono VCA. The mono signal can be heard first and then run trough the Neutron Flux which spreads the signal to stereo. I used the Mean mode first, then the Yellow Liquid (stereo phaser) and Yellow Crisp (chebyshev) modes. Some kick and hats thrown there too.

The stereo spreading is not anything time based modulation related but entirely different and analog. You can hear some distortion as well as cutoff difference trickery there.

Be sure to listen on headphones or studio monitoring to hear the stereo spectrum!"

Hollow Chorus Bass - A Supercritical Neutron Flux piece

video by Supercritical Synthesizers

"A quick jam around a chorus-y bass patch idea. The Sour 3 Pole mode has a nice hollow square waveform when the resonance is fully up. Stereo control is used to fine tune both channels. When both channels are patched in stereo, they drift just enough to form a wide stereo image.

The Antumbra ROT8 sequencer is to blame for this patch. It’s fantastic!

Throw in a bit of cheap dirty 909 samples and finally have the exponential VCA distort too. Why not"
