Buchla Touché (1980) – Hybrid Analog Keyboard Instrument
The following was sent in by Anastasia Chernysheva, a Ph.D. student at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
"In 1979, Donald Buchla invited experimental composer and his friend, David Rosenboom to collaborate on the design of a new, keyboard instrument with digital sound generation and hybrid, computer-controlled, analog outputs. The result was the Touché, released in the spring of 1980.
Among particular traits of the instrument are:
• flexibility in use – highly programmable, (64 programmable function parameters available), Touché offers a library of “instrument” structures that could be stored as “presets”;
• responsiveness – a user of Touché would enjoy a broad ability to program multiple stimuli and response structures in performance;
• non-linear waveshaping – Touché permits to produce an enormous range of sound with efficient means of control, i.e. using a small number of knobs
The guiding idea of the instrument design was to optimize it for live performance. The hybrid, digital-analog nature of Touché assumes the following.
• On the digital side: a sound-generating engine produced a wide range of timbre of sound possibilities with non-linear wave shaping techniques.
• On the analog side: a programmable analog circuit called Multiple Arbitrary Function Generator (MARF) enabled extensive control of all sound synthesis parameters.
Rosenboom’s recordings Future Travel (1981) and Daytime Viewing (1983) offer extensive exposure to some particular sound worlds created with the Touché. Other than being used for these recordings and in the recent release by Richard Smith a.k.a. Shusta Cults, (the current owner of Rosenboom’s Touché), the instrument barely may be heard in any other recording. Only 4 instruments exist today but just one of them is in the functional condition.
To learn more about the history and design of the instrument check out the lecture about Buchla Touché given at University of Illinois (2022). Technical parameters of the instrument may be found in the brochure for the instrument. Download the PDF here."

Modbap Meridian Demo
video upload by Modbap Modular
"Meridian is what we call a "complex filter array." This isn't because it's hard to use. We take great pride in distilling complexity into a fun and performable user interface. It is a “complex filter array” because it has a harmonious set of features that let you create complex tones and uniquely interesting sounds. It's made to change the sound and tone of audio signals through a cleverly assembled set of features, such as an array of interrelated filter types, filter modes, phase shifting modulation, drive, and bit depth, which all work together to make complex soundscapes and textures.
The name Meridian represents the idea of a meeting point or a convergence of different elements. Filters are often used to blend, shape, and refine different sounds into a cohesive whole. Meridian is often represented through the idea of a barrier or a line that separates parts. This concept mirrors the way the filter delineates different frequencies and aural elements, generating a defined contrast that shapes the overall sound.

Press release follows:
Modbap Modular expands Eurorack range with Meridian module announced as DUAL MULTIMODE FILTER ARRAY
LOS ANGELES, CA, USA: black-owned electronic music instrument manufacturer Modbap Modular is proud to announce upcoming availability of Meridian as the sixth module in its expanding Eurorack range — duly designed as a DUAL MULTIMODE FILTER ARRAY to offer users a choice between four selectable filter types per side and four selectable filter modes per side, as well as DRIVE CIRCUIT and PHASE SHIFTER effects, plus a (low- pass gate-style) PING ability — as of April 12 (in advance of appearing at The 2023 NAMM Show, April 13-15, in Anaheim, CA, USA)…
As a MULTIMODE FILTER ARRAY — as the wording subtly sited across the top of the instantly-recognizable Modbap Modular brand color- coordinated front panel points out, Meridian affords users the flexibility to easily create a range of sound textures and sonic landscapes using a single Eurorack module. Meridian represents the idea of a meeting point or a convergence of different elements; after all, filters are often used to blend, shape, and refine different sounds into a cohesive whole. When defining meridian as a word, it is often represented through the idea of a barrier or a line that separates parts; this concept mirrors the way that a filter delineates different frequencies and aural elements, generating a defined contrast that shapes the overall sound.
Saying that, then, the naming of Modbap Modular’s 14HP-width Meridian module conveys a sense of balance, harmony, and unity, while also suggesting a clear and definitive separation between different sonic elements. Indeed, it allows the use of two selectable — mixed or matched — filter types and two selectable — mixed or matched — filter modes to reshape and refine the source material into new cohesive textures.
Those two filters each have independently adjustable CUT OFF, RES (resonance), and SHAPE (contour) parameters. PRIMEFREQ is the center macro control of both filters in tandem. The module also boasts PING, an aptly-titled dynamic control feature, the activation of which is enabled through the PING input. It also allows CONFIGURATION of serial or parallel routing.
Besides boasting comb, ladder, OTA (Operational Transducer Amplifier), and vocal formant filter types alongside LP (low-pass), HP (high-pass), BP (band-pass), and NOTCH filter modes to generate a vast range of textures, Meridian’s sound-shaping capabilities are also furthered by its two distinctive and characterful effects: DRIVE CIRCUIT (with AMOUNT, TONE, and CRUSH controls) and PHASE SHIFTER (with PAN, DEPTH, and SPEED controls).
Clearly, all of Meridian’s key features can be modulated via CV (control voltage) inputs — synchronization to tempo can be achieved with the CLOCK input, allowing for clock-synchronized phase shifting, for instance.
In essence, Meridian was designed with tweak-ability and performance in mind — as is typical of Modbap Modular modules. Indeed, it is the perfect playmate for Osiris — operating itself as a powerful (frequency modulation- and phase modulation-including) seven-plus TIMBRE MODE 12HP-width BI-FIDELITYTM WAVETABLE OSC (oscillator) module, neatly-packed with an independent sub-oscillator, LOFI processing, extensive CV modulation capabilities, a PITCH quantizer, four banks of 32 x 32 wavetables per bank, the ability to load user wavetables via microSD card (not included), and its own free open-source wavetable editor (OsirisEdit).
Modbap Modular will be exhibiting at The NAMM Show 2023, April 13-15, in Anaheim, CA, USA. Feel free to swing by booth #9800 — shared with Canadian startup This.is.NOISE inc, where it will be demonstrating its entire Eurorack range, including the Meridian module announced as a DUAL MULTIMODE FILTER ARRAY.

Herzlich Labs OMEN / DUAL PASSIVE RESONANT LPG with BITE / quick playthrough
video upload by BRiES
"This is a short video demonstrating the basic sound and functionality of OMEN. There's two channels of LPG goodness which both sound really different, and you can further shape the sound with the on board switches and knobs. It's possible to use the channels seperately (for different sound sources) or to use the two channels of OMEN linked with just one signal going into the first input. You'll hear that this sounds really wonderful!
You can download the user guide poster I made for OMEN here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/11Opq...
Herzlich Labs hand-builds a variety of modules, but one of the things that they're extra proud of is the MMI. This module is a MAN-MACHINE-INTERFACE that lets you modulate parameters around your rack by touching the different capacative plates on the frontpanel. If you're interested in something like that you should definitely check out their Etsy or Reverb webshops (links below). If you have any questions about the Herzlich Lab modules, send LB a direct message, he's usually really quick to respond.
Herzlich Labs on Reverb: https://reverb.com/shop/herzlichlabs
Herzlich Labs on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/HerzlichLabs
DISCLAIMER: LB from Herzlich Labs sent me this unit to explore and demonstrate. I think it's interesting to shine a light on some makers that are not as well known as the big names in the field, as sometimes they make really great designs and usually these modules are relatively affordable. I hope that by watching the video you can figure out if OMEN is right for you or not."
"The Omen is a dual LPG with a bit more than you might be used to. Like you, I once was lost in the world of low pass gates, seeking something more, something bigger and somehow juicier. The inspiration came to me as I was reading a particularly heavy book on passive filters, and I realized it was possible to make far more interesting LPG designs than the standard we've become so accustomed to.
In a convergence of old-school LPG design and more modern components, the Omen boasts two -6dB resonant filters, custom built vactrols, built in CV attenuation and no less than three cutoff modes per filter. Filter 1 is soft and light, imparting a gentle, naturally gated touch of filtering on your sound, while Filter 2 is darker and more resonant, and can turn downright growly and distorted when left wide open.
Designed to give you as many creative options as possible, the Omen has the unique ability to function as either two discrete LPG, or as one 4-pole resonant LPG. When plugging a signal in to Input 1, and with no signal plugged into Input 2, the output will be present at both Output 1 and Output 2, with Output 2 producing the signal as it passes through both filters. Tweaking both filters independently will generate a wide array of soft and sometimes harsh tones, ranging from Buchla bongos to early synthesis brass and organ sounds. There is much to love here.
CV is similarly handled, by plugging in only one CV source, it will act on both channels - this is useful for creating musically similar outputs as well as when using the dual filter operation. However, the dual filter mode greatly benefits from having two CV inputs: use an envelope in CV1 to act as a VCA, and an LFO in CV2 to create tremolo, for instance.
Using custom designed, hand built vactrols, care has been taken to mitigate the less desirable aspects of passive LPGs - in most modules, the user can expect zero bleed through on the LPG channels, and signal attenuation is minimal even with the 4-pole filter settings engaged. Of course, many of the natural features of vactrols remain, such as subtle memory effect when engaging the vactrol for long periods.
Finally, you receive maximum blinkenlights as LED's on the front panel simulate the action of the vactrols, so you'll always know what's going on under the hood. No collection of fancy LPG's is complete without the Omen."

Instrument Designer: Rare Buchla 700 Synth Coming to Software on Mac, Windows & iOS
via modosc designs
"a modern interpretation of the buchla 700, coming soon for mac, windows, and ios."
If you are not familiar with the Buchla 700, check out Chimeror by Benge on Vintage Buchla 700. According to that post, only about 12 of these machines were ever produced, and there are possibly only 4 working examples left in existence.
Update: Some additional info via modosc designs:
On the developer: "Jonathan Schatz has spent his life pursuing dual passions of music and computing, occasionally simultaneously. One of these convergences led to working with Don Buchla on the 200e system for several years. The latest such convergence is Modosc Designs."
FAQ:
"What is Instrument Designer?
Instrument Designer is a software synthesizer inspired by the Buchla 700.
Ok, what is the Buchla 700?
The Buchla 700 is a 12 voice 4 operator FM synth released in 1987 and designed by Don Buchla. There are several main ways the 700 differentiates itself from the other FM synths common in the industry at that time:
Each algorithm outputs through two independant waveshapers. This allows a single instrument defintion to output two different audio signals without requiring a separate stacked voice. This also increases the sonic palette by allowing a user to easily create non-sinusoid waveforms.
The waveshapers are cousins to the ones use in the Buchla Touche, Buchla 400 and the Buchla 259e. They are quite unique and use some interesting waveshaping techniques.
Each voice has 13 complex envelopes which control almost every aspect of the sound algorithm. The envelopes have a unique exponential display, are programmable with an arbitrary number of breakpoints, and include programmable features such as looping.
Programming was simplified with the help of a graphical user interface and an external monitor.
What does it sound like?
There weren't a lot of these produced so there's not that much out there, but what is out there is quite interesting:
Charles Cohen — Generator
Benge — Chimeror
Ode To Gravity — this is from the release party for the 700 and includes interviews with Don
So what happened to it?
The instrument never became very popular and today is one of the rarer of Don Buchla's instruments (which says a lot). The software itself was never finished, and the video card which connected up the external display was unreliable and eventually end-of-lifed by Intel. Probably 15-20 of these were made - I personally know of 3, of which only 1 currently works.
Why hasn't anyone made a reissue?
Good question. The design is quite complicated and includes 4 separate computers as well as a large membrane input surface. It would certainly be possible to build but it wouldn't be a cheap endevor, and unlike other recent reissues it probably wouldn't be a big seller - it's likely the most difficult instrument of Don's to use.
So why are you bothering?
I love the sound of Don's wavetable synths (specifically the 259e) and I've spent a lot of time implementing and reimplenting various related algorithms. I had the opportunity to play around with a 700 a few years back and the idea was hatched there.
Are you using the original source code?
No. This entire project was implemented using a scan of the original 700 manual as the spec (which was the usual Don way of doing things). You can view the original source code here, which is interesting because it seemingly contains code used for a NASA project as well:
Set ON_B700 non-zero to get a Buchla 700 PROM, or zero to get a NASA 3D Helmet Display PROM.
That source dump from Lynx Crowe is unfortunately incomplete but there is a project that's managed to get it to boot. Unfortunately the source code only includes some of the controller code and none of the DSP code so currently there's no sound generation.

Erik Norlander and Galactic Collective Help Celebrate Bob Moog's Birthday
You saw the videos posted here and here, as well as the announcement here and the rare Moog Apollo prototype & modular system. The following are some official pics of the event and the press release from The Bob Moog Foundation.
"Asheville, NC - May 2014... Synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog's upcoming 80th birthday was commemorated in grand fashion on May 8th with a "Tribute to Dr. Bob" concert by virtuoso synthesist Erik Norlander and his band The Galactic Collective to benefit the Bob Moog Foundation.
The concert, held at Asheville's Isis Music Hall, featured Norlander, accompanied by bandmates Jeff Kollman on guitar, Mark Matthews on bass, and Nick Le Par on drums. Norlander's onstage rig included three very special, fully restored vintage synthesizers from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives, including a 1967 Moog modular, an early Minimoog Model D, and an extremely rare Moog Apollo.
"The convergence of the Moog modular, the Minimoog, and the Moog Apollo in one performance is nearly unprecedented," notes Michelle Moog-Koussa, executive director of the Bob Moog Foundation. "Not since Keith Emerson toured with a prototype Apollo in the early '70s have they been heard together in live performance, making this "Tribute to Dr. Bob" concert a truly historic occasion."
The 1967 R. A. Moog Co. modular is an iconic synthesizer on permanent loan from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. It was built for the first electronic music studio in the state, and hand delivered by Bob Moog.
The 1973 Minimoog was donated to the Foundation by Asheville composer and arranger Tom Coppola, who used it to record the signature three-note "Duracell sound", among many other commercial and musical applications. The Minimoog was the first mass-produced commercially available synthesizer that the working musician could afford. It is considered by many to be the most iconic synthesizer of all times.
Norlander used the Foundation's Minimoog and modular for giant bass sweeps and drones, adding weight and atmosphere to his tracks, "Arrival," "Sky Full of Stars" and "The Dark Water."
The priceless Moog Apollo is one of the few of its kind in the world. This 1973 instrument, newly and fully restored by the Bob Moog Foundation, served as a prototype for the production model Polymoog. The Apollo is one of the earliest polyphonic synths, synthesizers that could play more than one note at a time.
Norlander brought the Apollo alive in a stunning solo during his signature piece, "Dreamcurrents," using the harpsichord program to conjure the early days of polysynth performance art with classic, vintage tones. He reprised the harpsichord again in the waltz section of "After the Revolution," normally played on acoustic piano. Norlander later employed famous "Vox Humana" program in his bombastic choral opening of "Neurosaur" and used the Apollo soft analog brass sound for his gentler introductory theme on "Fanfare for Absent Friends."
"Bob Moog brought a new voice to the musical landscape, and our musical vernacular would be very different without his enduring contribution," Norlander remarked. "The name 'Moog' is synonymous with art, science and innovation, and as a keyboardist and synthesist, I can think of no greater tribute than using Bob's timeless inventions as the core instruments in my own craft."
Drew Heller, guitarist for the African fusion band Toubab Krewe, opened the show for the Galactic Collective, joined by his father, Grammy award winning producer/composer Steven Heller. Bob Moog had a close musical relationship with Toubab Krewe; Steven Heller was long-time friend and musical collaborator. Their acoustic set was marked by stories about Moog's generosity, fearless pursuit of the unknown, and his sense of humor."

Arturia initiates iOS 7 support with iMini V1.2 iPad app update
iTunes: iMini - Arturia
“Arturia’s iMini app is a stunning recreation of the original Minimoog. The performance features and arpeggiator add a whole new twist to this already classic synth. I am completely blown away that I now have this on my iPad.”
- Richard Devine, 2013 (electronic musician and sound designer)
GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of iMini V1.2, an innovative iOS 7-supporting update to its authentic recreation of the 1971-vintage Minimoog * monosynth for Apple’s all- conquering iPad, as of September 26...
Like time and tide, technology waits for no man (or woman). Within days of Apple advancing its iOS — the mobile operating system at the heart of its iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices — to iOS 7, with all-new features like smarter multitasking as well as enhanced apps to make everything easier to get to and use, Arturia advances its iMini app to take advantage of iOS 7’s inbuilt Inter-App Audio, allowing users to send MIDI commands and stream audio between apps on the same device. Thanks to its new iOS 7-supporting INTERAPP AUDIO TRANSPORT feature, iMini V1.2 can connect and control other similarly-supportive apps with the greatest of ease, letting users concentrate on what they do best — making music with the ultimate classic analogue synth emulation for iOS whenever and wherever the mood takes them!
Existing iMini owners of course can directly download the V1.2 update for free, which is sure to put them in a good mood to start with, but even with all this developmental discourse of iOS 7 support it’s still nice to know that Arturia will continue to make a donation to The Bob Moog Foundation for every iMini sold in recognition of the innovative instrument to which it owes its very existence. In turn, this supports the dream of building the MoogseumTM (Bob Moog Museum), the convergence of The Bob Moog Foundation’s goals of inspiring and educating people through electronic music.
Today, then, there’s really no excuse for not taking that history-making MinimoogTM sound anywhere anytime with iMini — all the more so with all that improved interactivity, thanks to the inspired iMini V1.2 update. So what are you waiting for? Head on over to Apple’s App Store and treat yourself to the new and improved ultimate classic analogue synth emulation for iOS! Inspiring electronic music awaits appropriate iPad owners everywhere.

Appropriate iPad owners can purchase and directly download iMini V1.2 from Apple’s App Store for $9.99 USD/€8.99 EURO/£6.99 GBP.

Arturia Memorialises Moog’s Birthday with Dr. Bob’s Collector Pack Promotion

Arturia’s Dr. Bob’s Collector Pack pricing promotion starts on May 23 and runs for one week only. During this time, Moog fans, musicians, and producers worldwide wishing to pay tribute to the inventive individual responsible for singlehandedly revolutionising the sound of modern music production with his namesake 1965-patented Moog Ladder Filter design — which featured in the breakthrough voltage-controlled Moog modular synthesizer and its game-changing 1971-vintage compact MinimoogTM monosynth followup (for which Dr. Bob Moog was posthumously inducted into the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office National Inventors Hall of Fame) — can purchase Dr. Bob’s Collector Pack from the Arturia website at a reduced rate of €129.00 EUR/$129.00 USD (instead of €249.00 EUR/$299.00 USD). As always, a percentage of the sales proceeds will be donated by Arturia to The Bob Moog Foundation. In turn, this supports the dream of building the MoogseumTM (Bob Moog Museum), the convergence of The Bob Moog Foundation’s goals of inspiring and educating people through electronic music.
Moog fans, musicians, and producers will take delight in the beautifully produced and carefully curated package that is Dr. Bob’s Collector Pack on many levels — be it factual, historical, and, of course, musical. First up, the latest versions of two award-winning soft synths from Arturia successfully showcase the company’s ear-opening TAE® (True Analog Emulation) synthesis technology: Mini V 2.5.4 meticulously models the distinctive tones and analogue nuances of the legendary MinimoogTM Model D monosynth; after all, Dr. Bob Moog changed the musical world with the MinimoogTM and Arturia helped change the music software world with the Mini V! Similarly, Modular V 2.6.3 gives Dr. Bob Moog’s monstrous Moog modular synthesizer concept a software makeover fit for 21st Century composition and recording workflow — virtual analogue nirvana, indeed! (The use of trademarks is only meant as a reference to clarify the instruments whose sound was modelled and does not imply any endorsement.)
But that’s not all: the included Moog DVD documentary film by Hans Fjellestad — Best Documentary award winner at the Barcelona Inedit Film Festival — takes viewers on a compelling journey inside the imaginative mind of its illustrious namesake, alongside admiring interviews with and performances from the likes of DJ Spooky, Keith Emerson, Money Mark, Stereolab, and Rick Wakeman. Curated and prefaced by Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director at The Bob Moog Foundation, the limited-edition From Bob Moog’s Private Archives book fascinatingly features never-before-seen photographs and rare documents from the archives of Dr. Bob Moog himself.
And last, but by no means least, the official Bob Moog Foundation button badge is a great way of showing support for The Bob Moog Foundation by buying Dr. Bob’s Collector Pack — wear it with pride! So let’s collectively celebrate a legacy in honour of Dr. Bob Moog’s 79th birthday and help inspire the future.
The Dr. Bob’s Collector Pack pricing promotion runs for one week from May 23 during which it can be bought from the Arturia online store (http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy/online-shop.html) for the reduced rate of €129.00 EUR/$129.00 USD (returning to €249.00 EUR/$299.00 USD thereafter)."

DESCRIPTION
iMini is a recreation of the classic 1971 Minimoog™ synthesizer, one of most iconic synthesizers of all time.
Based on the TAE® technology found in our award winning Mini V software, iMini offers a level of sound quality never before found on the iPAD as well as over 500 sounds by leading sound designers.
We have also partnered with the Bob Moog Foundation so that a portion of each sale goes to support their work in music education via the Dr. Bob Sound school program, making available the archives of Dr. Bob Moog and funding the dream to build the Moogseum.
The Minimoog™ synthesizer was made famous by artists and bands such as Stevie Wonder, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Keith Emerson, Devo, Jean Michel Jarre and more. We now bring the features and sound of this classic to the iOS platform.
The iMini not only recreates the look and feel of the most legendary synthesizer, it does it with unparalleled sound quality. iMini is based on the award winning Arturia Mini V software that was created in partnership with Dr. Robert Moog himself, back in 2003. "Arturia advances history-making Minimoog to iPad musical masses!
"The iMini turned my iPad into an ‘old skool’ analogue bass monster! Its sound is irresistibly ‘phat’ and very close to the original. If you want that typical dirty Moog sound then the iMini is all you’ll ever need. It’s by far the most powerful and hypnotising synth app on the market.”
- Stefan Bodzin, 2013 (DJ/producer, remixer of Depeche Mode, Booka Shade, and more)
GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of iMini, an authentic recreation of the all-time classic Minimoog monosynth for Apple’s all-conquering iPad, as of February 27...
iMini is based on the TAE® (True Analog Emulation) synthesis technology found in Arturia’s award-winning Mini V soft synth, meticulously modelling the distinctive tones and analogue nuances of the legendary Seventies-vintage Minimoog Model D monosynth. Moog changed the musical world with the Minimoog and Arturia helped change the music software world with the Mini V.
Arturia now brings the still-sought-after classic Minimoog sound to the musical masses, transforming any iPad mini, iPad 2, or iPad with Retina display into the ultimate analogue synth emulation! Those timeless three oscillators and that 24dB per octave fabled filter are all present and accounted for in iMini. It also successfully sports the look and feel of Dr Bob Moog’s namesake iconic synthesizer for all to see (and hear). But being a game-changing iPad app for 2013 and not an analogue synth design dating back to 1970 means there’s a whole lot more to iMini than first meets the eye...
Any serious synthesizer connoisseur will instantly recognise the MAIN mode screen as an eye-catching rendering of the Minimoog Model D front panel, albeit with welcome additional ‘analogue’ CHORUS AMT. and DELAY AMT. level controls, as well as a POLY switch for playing polyphonically — impossible in 1970, obviously! Other subtle supplements include a gearwheel icon above the keyboard — press to reveal GLIDE, DECAY, LEGATO, and SCROLL switches for performance keyboard control, plus a SCALE function to choose from no fewer than 26 different scales and modes. Meanwhile, iMini comes complete with hundreds of superb sounds showcasing its supreme sonic versatility; press LOAD from the menu bar and choose from sound designer or category — couldn’t be simpler!
But ‘behind’ that familiar-looking MAIN screen lies a wealth of truly 21st Century audio action: the PERFORMANCE page accesses an arpeggiator with two latch modes and two assignable XY pads for creating all kinds of patterns and real-time morphing sounds; the FX page provides iMini with the same wide-ranging CHORUS and accurate ANALOG DELAY models found in the above-mentioned Mini V software — subtle sound thickening to wildly modulated effects (chorus) and sync to external tempo (stereo delay) possibilities abound here! Handily, all onscreen knobs and switches in each iMini page can easily be assigned to MIDI CC allowing automation from any external MIDI source. The default MIDI map will automatically work with Arturia MiniLab or Analog Player 25 Universal MIDI Controller keyboards!
And that’s not all: the CONNECT page is the gateway to making iMini talk to the outside world (using the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit) — use WIST (Wireless Sync Start Technology) to sync the arpeggiator and delay to other iPad or iPhone apps, and integrate iMini into a complete studio environment via Retronyms Tabletop. This free iPad app allows multiple iMini instances to be simultaneously run; real-time performance recording into a sequencer; parameter automation; processing of third-party, Tabletop-ready apps through the iMini filter, and more. “iMini is an ideal Tabletop-ready app,” says Retronyms Co-Founder John-Paul Walton. “It’s a fresh take on a legendary synth, and comes packed with a ton of amazing presets — everything from retro space sounds to contemporary bass noise.”
Thanks to iMini, today there’s really no excuse for not taking that history-making Minimoog sound anywhere anytime. And in recognition of the groundbreaking instrument to which it owes its very existence, for every iMini sold, Arturia will make a donation to The Bob Moog Foundation, whose Executive Director, Michelle Moog-Koussa, kindly adds: “We are grateful to Arturia and Retronyms for donating part of the proceeds from the iMini in support of our mission to ignite creativity at the intersection of music, science, history, and innovation. A portion of this funding will go to support our educational initiative, Dr Bob’s SoundSchool, which teaches children the science of sound through the magic of music.”
For Frédéric Brun, Arturia’s President, the feeling is mutual: “We are delighted to donate to The Bob Moog Foundation and acknowledge our gratitude to Robert Moog, who helped us when we released our first virtual instrument, the Modular Moog V, back in 2003. We are also thrilled to work with Retronyms, who are a great company and a force to be reckoned with when it comes to iOS. The iMini sets a new standard for what a virtual instrument should sound like on an iPad.”
So let’s make music and help history come alive with iMini in more ways than one, and also support the dream of building the Moogseum (Bob Moog Museum), the convergence of The Bob Moog Foundation’s goals of inspiring and educating people through electronic music.
Appropriate iPad owners can purchase iMini directly from Apple’s App Store during a three-week introductory launch pricing period for €8.99 EURO/$9.99 USD (rising to €19.99 EURO/$21.99 USD thereafter)."

The One-Of-A-Kind OMG-1, designed by Eric Persing
The creation of electronic music has always relied on exploring all technologies available. In the modern context, that often means transcending the divide between the tactile experience of hardware devices and the ever-increasing capabilities of computers. An incredible panel of sonic explorers moderated by Spectrasonics’ founder Eric Persing will investigate the challenges of how electronic instruments can reach their ultimate potential through the convergence of multiple technologies.
During this panel, Persing will be awarding his one-of-a-kind OMG-1 synthesizer to the winner of the OMG-1 Contest, Torley Wong. You won’t want to miss this historical moment!
The Bob Moog Foundation is bringing together top minds in history, technology and education for this year’s history and technical panels. Experts, ranging from Bob’s colleagues in the seminal days of synthesis to the more contemporary sound sculptors of today, are coming from around the country to share their ideas and vast experiences. The Bob Moog Foundation will be responsible for the historical content at Moogfest, including items from Dr. Bob’s Archives such as rarely seen vintage photographs and historic audio clips from recently restored reel-to-reel tapes.
All panels, demonstrations, and workshops will take place between Noon and 6:30 PM EST at the Moogaplex, located at the Haywood Park Hotel complex at 1 Battery Park Avenue in downtown Asheville, just a stone’s throw from many of the music venues. They are first come, first serve for those who bought either weekend passes or have a pass for that particular day.

"Synplode: To experience the convergence of time and space, sometimes through sound and light.
This video illustrates the Synplode Project produced on a small scale. Synplode may be produced on a human scale, as big as a tennis court.

Bob Moog Foundation Inspired Moments of 2010
"Inspired. That word is embedded in the history, ethos and mission of the Bob Moog Foundation.
Bob was inspired by the possibilities of unlimited sonic reality and by what he called "the network of ideas." The convergence of those ideas and possibilities in Bob's work effected millions of people around the world who were in turn inspired by his inventions and the music they spawned. This inspiration, and the way it changed people's lives, drives the very heart of our work in igniting creativity at the intersection of music, science, history and innovation.
Be part of the inspiration. Donate today.
In 2010, the inspiration that is rooted in Bob's work has manifested itself in some of my proudest moments in the Foundation's history:
* In April we concluded "Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog" exhibit at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California. Over 200 items from Bob's archives were on display, seen by over 20,000 people.
* In May, we made modular synthesis accessible (thanks to Amos Gaynes and August Worley) by transforming Erik Norlander's legendary "Wall of Doom" custom modular Moog synthesizer from a 6' x 7' monolithic structure into six portable rack mount cases. It was featured at our spring fundraiser Moogus Operandi. This unique instrument will travel once again this spring (and beyond), giving audiences new insights into the origin of synthesis.
* In October, the Bob Moog Foundation wowed standing-room-only audiences at Moogfest with historical, educational and technical panels and discussions, drawing the attention of the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal . That same month, preservationist Seva Ball finished restoring and transferring 88 reel-to-reel tapes from our archives.
* Throughout the year, we exposed children and adults to the science of sound through MoogLab; we gave people all over the world a rare glimpse into some little known facets of the Moog legacy through historian Brian Kehew's detailed explorations of moments in time captured in material from our archives; and we reveled in the varied and important work of our corps of committed, talented volunteers.
What inspires you? Unbridled musical exploration? Innovative methods in education? Unknown history brought alive to illuminate the future? Opening people's minds to a world of possibilities that in turn make them more creative thinkers?
This is our work-- the work of the Bob Moog Foundation. We illuminate history so that it might serve as a lesson for the future. We provide unparalleled opportunities for young and old to explore sonic realms and sculpt sound as an avenue to ignite creativity through science.
Take this opportunity at year's end to be part of our inspired and inspiring work. Make an on line donation today or send a donation to:
