RIP Eddie Van Halen

VHTelevision

Update: Don't miss the 1982 interview below. Make the time. It is worth it.

Known for his mastering of the guitar, Eddie Van Halen also embraced synths in his music. As you are likely well aware of, Eddie played the OB-Xa in the classic Jump video above. You can see him solo at 2:34. The keyboard lines in Jump have essentially become to keyboardists what the guitar lines in Stairway to Heaven have become to guitarists.

He passed away today at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer. To say he will be missed is an understatement.

Interesting note: Eddie was also a classical pianist.

And some interesting history from Wikipedia:

"Born in Amsterdam,[3] Netherlands, Edward Lodewijk van Halen (Dutch: [ˈɛdʋɑrt ˈloːdəʋɛjk vɑnˈhaːlə(n)]) was the son of Jan van Halen and Eugenia van Halen (née van Beers). Jan was a Dutch clarinetist, saxophonist, and pianist, and Eugenia was an Indo (Eurasian) from Rangkasbitung on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia).[4][5] The family eventually resettled in Nijmegen.[6]

In February 1962, the Van Halen family moved from the Netherlands to the United States, settling in Pasadena, California.[5] Both Eddie and his older brother, Alex van Halen, naturalized as U.S. citizens.[7] The brothers learned to play the piano as children starting at the age of six.[8][9] They commuted from Pasadena to San Pedro to study with an elderly piano teacher, Stasys Kalvaitis.[10]

We came here with approximately $50 and a piano, and we didn't speak the language. Now look where we are. If that’s not the American dream, what is?[11]

Van Halen revealed in an interview that he had never been able to read music. Instead, he learned from watching and listening. During recitals of Bach or Mozart, he would improvise. From 1964 through 1967, he won first place in the annual piano competition held at Long Beach City College.[10] Afterward, the judges would comment that he had an interesting interpretation of the classical piece. Van Halen's view was, "What? I thought I was playing it correctly!" However, according to one interview, playing the piano did not prove to be challenging or interesting to him.[12] Consequently, while Alex began playing the guitar, Eddie bought a drum kit and began practicing for hours every day."

Update:

You can find additional posts mentioning Van Halen here. You'll find some demos and other interesting synth connections.

The following is a video I found while searching on YouTube. I was going to post this separately, but I thought it was a nice tribute to the song and an example of the influence Eddie has had on people in the synth community.

Inasimplerhyme

"First I play '1984' on the OB-8 and then 'Jump' along with the original song's stems. The ending I crafted is modeled after how they performed the song live on the 1984 tour. (Check out Jump + Montreal on youtube and you can see my inspiration.) I did this by editing together individual drum hits, guitar and bass parts from the split stems and other Van Halen songs."

"A riff that came to my head on yesterday's live streaming, played on a Roland JX-8P, as a sound demonstration. The sound reminds quite a lot the original Oberheim synth.
Van Halen's "Jump" originally composed by Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen.
Synth riff performed here by DX5 Jose Maria Bara.
PS: DX5 is me, not that I am playing this on a Yamaha DX5 :-)"

Van Halen - Jump (Greensboro)

YouTube via almostsaved.
"Van Halen performs "Jump" in Greensboro, NC on September 29, 2007."
This one has been making its rounds. In case you missed it, word is the OB-Xa synth piece is a recording being incorrectly played back at a sample rate of 48k instead of 44.1k - completely out of tune against Eddie Van Halen's guitar. Don't miss David Lee Roth's baton performance after the horrendous guitar solo as well as him riding a huge inflatable microphone shortly after.

"Jump" Roland Jupiter 6

Published on Apr 29, 2014 synthartist69·1,188 videos

"Here is a version of 'Jump' by Van Halen that I programmed the Jupiter 6 for. I know all the parts aren't exactly perfect. It's not easy to play all the other instruments...guitar, bass, drums either! For drums I actually used my Roland JV80 keyboard finger drums and just played the drums to the synthesizer track that I created. The recording didn't come out exactly the way I wanted it to but I must accept that I am not Eddie Van Halen by any means, not even a professional musician, just a hobbyist. Thanks for watching!"

Van Halen 1984 Explained - Oberheim OB-Xa

video upload by Ryan Day

"Giving you my take on how Eddie Van Halen created the 1984 intro on an Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer, and how his engineer Donn Landee put it all together based on what I've read.

The resonance bass swells consisting lower 4 voices would have been panned to the L output, and the upper string 4 voices panned to the R output. Engineer Donn Landee would have recorded the L/R outputs on to 2 separate tracks allowing him to process each track differently."

Syntronik & Yamaha DX7 - Sound Comparison Minimoog, OB-Xa, CS-80, Jupiter-8, JX-8P To SY99 & DX7

Power DX7
Published on Aug 7, 2017

"Syntronik is a sampled waveform based VST that emulates legendary synths such as Minimoog, Oberheim OB-Xa, Yamaha CS-80, Roland Jupiter-8, Roland JX-8P and Yamaha SY99.

As I can never afford (nor I have space to keep) all of those legendary synths, I bought Syntronik so that I get to play and learn more about those legendary synths.

As I’ve been making analog/subtractive synth-like patches on my DX7, I decided to put my DX7 MK1 against Syntronik with mighty legendary synths like Minimoog, OB-Xa, CS-80, Jupiter-8, JX-8P and SY99.

In this demo and comparison video, you will watch and hear sounds of the DX7 MK1 compared side by side to Syntronik legendary synths. Some sounds are close and others are different in many ways.

Although the DX7 can’t do everything that analog synths with a resonant filter can do, the DX7 can stand its own with unique sounds that analog synths may find very difficult to emulate.

I will take you thorough from very easy installation and set-up steps. I will give you a quick tour of Syntronik interface and legendary synths.

Comparison
Yamaha CS-80 with a synth brass for UK Alaska Vs Power DX7 signature patch, Alaska with a natural flanging effect

Yamaha SY99 with bell and electoric piano Vs Power DX7 signature patches, Bell X2 and E.Piano (beefed up version)

Minimoog with Resonant stab bass & Resonant Sequencing Vs Power DX7 signature patches, Resonant Stab Bass and Resonant Sequencing. As the DX7 doesn’t have a resonant filter, it needs to generate all harmonics using its FM synthesis. This produces a resonant filter-like, yet very distinctive tone with a ‘Sticky’ feel.

Roland Jupiter-8 with Resonant Unison Lead (16 Oscillators stack) vs Power DX7 signature Resonant Lead with ear piecing mid range (no unison for the DX7)!

Roland JX-8P/ JX-10 with Saw Pad Vs Power DX7 Signature Saw Pad
Oberheim OB-Xa with Rush Subdivisions and Van Halen Jump Synth Brasses Vs Power DX7 Signature Rush Subdivisions and Van Halen Jump Synth Brasses

Oberheim OB-Xa with a warm pad Vs Power DX7, Earth 1, the mother of all pads!

To finish this demo, I include a brand new DX7 song called ‘Resonance Beat’ by combining various Power DX7 signature patches, including Bell X2, Resonant Stab Bass, Resonant Sequencing, Earth 1 Pad. Also it includes a new Bell (like a small bell rolling around inside of a glass bottle), a Resonant Filter Sweep sounds and another Resonant Sequencing sound with a formant type tone when played soft (yes, you can have two different tones in a single patch for the DX7!).

Enjoy!"

Amazing Yamaha DX7 analog patches demo – Van Halen 1984 & Jump, Rush Subdivisions, U.K. and Berlin

Published on Apr 29, 2016 Power DX7

This one in via MTG.

"This is a Yamaha DX7 demo brought you by Power DX7, showcasing the breathtaking realism and unparalleled versatility of the Yamaha DX7.

This video demonstrates amazingly warm and rich Yamaha DX7 analogue patches including Oberheim synths. These DX7 analog patches can transform the DX7 as well as Yamaha DX7s, DX7 II and TX802 into analog synthesizers. Also, a Yamaha DX7 plugin (such as FM7, FM8 and Dexed) can be transformed into an analog synthesizer with uniquely DX7 patches.

The Yamaha DX7 is the one of the best ‘pure’ synthesizer which has a very powerful FM synthesis engine. It is a famous vintage synthesizer, released in 1983, that is gaining resurgence recently. Yamaha DX7 sounds were very famous during the 1980’s with its typical E. piano and E. base sounds.

I have owned my Yamaha DX7 Mk I since 1986 and making my own original DX7 patches ever since. My focus is to push the DX7 and its FM synthesizers to its limits, hence creating many original patches with breathtaking sonic quality, realism and expression, from warm analog synthesizer sounds to uniquely DX7 piano, brass, string voice, etc.

For those interested in a Yamaha DX7 review, this is the excellent Yamaha DX7 demo showcasing its capability and versatility. For those interested in Yamaha DX7 programming, this DX7 demo shows you that creating amazing DX7 patches are only limited by your imagination.

I have chosen 5 songs to create this great Yamaha DX7 cover video. All DX7 analog patches featured are created and fine-tuned by myself, using my DX7 front panel only (no patch editor used). I hope you enjoy Yamaha DX7 music that I created for this cover and hope to inspire you that the DX7 is the truly powerful and versatile ‘pure’ synthesizer of all time.

Video Contents

Power DX7 Intro song

All original DX7 patches with amazing realism and expression, are used - Piano (High and Low notes), Male Choir, Female Opera and DX7 Brass

0:15 - Van Halen, 1984 & Jump
Beautiful, warm and rich Oberheim synth (e.g., OB-X and OB-Xa) string and brass patches are faithfully created. It is amazing how the Yamaha DX7 sounds are so close to sounds from Oberheim synths. Also, it can mimic filter sweeping, creating analogue-like, yet uniquely DX7 sounds.

2:35 – Rush, Subdivisions
Rush (my favourite band) used an Oberheim synthesizer for the powerful song Subdivisions (you can see that at the intro of the music video Subdivisions).
The DX7 faithfully emulates a warm Oberheim synth brass sound with rich mid-range harmonics you hear in the song Subdivisions.

4:06 - U.K., Alaska
This DX7 analog patch is uniquely DX7 with its’ FM synthesis engine. It ‘s a very powerful DX7 synth brass sound with ‘ear-piecing’ mid-range harmonics as well as it’s own flanging effect.

6:35 – Berlin, Masquerade
Berlin has a song called Masquerade and you can hear a very nice synth string sound. This DX7 analog patch emulates the synth string sound very nicely, as it is rich in higher harmonics and highly modulated."

MiMa feat. Van Halen - Jump! - 2nd version

YouTube via mima14031985

"Hi folks! Here's my second version of Van Halen - Jump, this time featuring the Roland JP-8000, all another story from my previous attempt with the Korg N5. I've also played the 1984 opening song as Jump's intro. My version of 1984 is transposed a semitone up respect to the original, in order to come in with Jump in a perfect fifth (1984 ends in G major, jump starts in C major).
The patch used is the same for both songs, and is the usual used and abused double detuned sawtooth sound, which differs in the 2 songs by it's envelope settings (very slow volume attack and release with filter steady opened for 1984, fast volume attack and release and very slow filter decay for Jump). The bass for 1984 it's also a double detuned sawtooth sound, but this time the 2nd oscillator is 1 octave higher than the 1st. Here we have constant volume but filter envelope with slow attack and release and stronger resonance, in order to obtain that whistleing effect.
As usual comments, while not being offensive, are really appreciated! Enjoy and thanks"

"...more experimentation with my new Sequential Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 6 synthesizer. This time, using MIDI I connected it to a Yamaha MX49, the baby Motif. The Yamaha is providing the perfect DX7 'FullTines' sound, and the secret technique here is that it's combined with a fat analog brass patch on the Prophet. It's a marriage of digital and analog synth sounds, which really captures that 1980s feel, when digital and analog equipment were coexisting in the studios for a while. A bit of 1980s nostalgia..."
