Farewell Vangelis - Deckards Dream & Arturia CS-80 V4 - 1492 conquest of paradise remix!

video upload by Wine&Synths

"This is my adieu to Vangelis. An exceptional artist!

So I will honor him with my first and last Vangelis Cover in a Latino-Lounge style. 25 years ago, I practiced this kind of sound for a project called 'Caipirinha Social Club'.

Performed and played on Black Corporation 'Deckards Dream' mk1 and the brand new Arturia CS-80 V4. All those are Replicants of the legendary Yamaha CS-80. Drums are from the vintage Vermona DRM. Enjoy the ride!

The Sound(s) of Vangelis

"The sound of the first works in Nemo Studio shaped mainly analog synthesizers and keyboards, initially Oberheim 4-Voice, ARP Pro Soloist, Elka Rhapsody 610, Farfisa Synthorchestra, Minimoog, Minikorg 700, Korg Polyphonic Ensemble, Roland SH-3A and the Roland system 100, 1977 and then more and more of the Yamaha CS-80, the Vangelis was now his main instrument. Vangelis was among the first CS-80 users in general, and his first instrument was the legend, even the adventurous way to take the train from across Japan by Russia."

CS80 Motherload on YouTube

Title link takes you to a post on VSE where I found a motherload of YouTube videos featuring the Yamaha CS80 - the credit goes to Micke for finding and listing these. It was a trip back in time seeing the Chariots of Fire video. I didn't realize there was an ARP 2500 featured throughout and this glimpse of a Korg PS3300. The ARP Odyssey lead by Billie Curie of Ultravox in Sleepwalk is worth noting as well; it's an amazing lead. Video links below.

Vangelis - Note the ARP 2500 in the background

Update: looks like the original link I had for Chariots of Fire got pulled, so here is another version currently up on YouTube:
Vangelis ( Chariots of Fire )

Ultravox - Sleepwalk (1980)
ELO - Here is the News (1981)
John Foxx - Underpass (1980)
John Foxx - No-One Driving (1980)

Update: Regarding the Korg modular, "That looks pretty much like a PS3300 as it doesn´t have the two vertical rows of tuning pots down the left-hand side of the 3200. I think Vangelis actually had a 3300, and during the session with Neuronium I believe they also used Huygen´s 3200 alongside the 3300, ARP 2500, and other stuff like Prophet 5 etc. What strikes me even more is the mystery synth on the backside photo of the original "In London" EP by Neuronium and Vangelis... it looks like a Mini Moog but I´m not sure it´s one." Deckard's Dream Demos by Pandomonium

These were spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

The demos are by Pandomonium

"These are all played live to a WAV track, no MIDI, string ensemble (left hand) is from a VP330 emulator. Keyboard controller is Kurzweil Midiboard, probably one the best polyAT keyboards that exists for playing DD."

DD - BRBlues - TEST1

Vangelis Medley With Deckard's Dream

"Playing Vangelis with Deckard's Dream. Dynamics are purely using Polyphonic Aftertouch, no pedals or mod wheel are used."

Deckard's Nightmare Test 1

"Played live with Deckard's Dream. All 8 voice boards cranking."

"These demos were made before I modified my DD to have a more pronounced 'sawtooth glitch' that's one of the components for that special CS-80 sound. While the 'sawtooth glitch' is implemented in DD, it is really functional in upper registers only with the first release. I modified the circuitry to have the glitch present across the entire keyboard. This did affect the sound a tiny amount; I made an A/B comparison with Vangelis Blade Runner theme and it's tough to tell the difference (I'll post a youtube video later, as soundcloud wouldn't accept it).

I have to say that Deckard's Dream has come pretty close to sounding like the CS-80. The differences are mostly attributed to performance and control."

Bladerunner atmosphere part 2 Desolation path

YouTube via mik300z. follow-up to this post
"Uploaded this a couple of weeks back, and removed it, apologies!! Anyway , here it is, the feedback from my other vangelis covers prompted me to take another view..."

ESQ1 Parameters for my Vangelis CS80 brass sounds

"the parameters in the video are for the patch which uses the mod. wheel to express the sound (my favourite)!.. By hitting the filter button and changing "wheel" to "env 2" you allow the patch to flow on its own. There are many variations of it, try experimenting with the LFO's and envelopes to suit . I find this patch with the mod wheel to be the best, certainly does not have the warmth of the CS80, but very inspiring.
The track I made for the video is the opening of "love is" by Jon and Vangelis"

Alesis Andromeda Sounds - Part 2 - Ok, it’s not a Yamaha CS-80, but…

video upload by Friendly Noise

Part 1 here

"Introduced in 2000, the Alesis A6 Andromeda was a real miracle in a music world without modern analog polysynths. All big polyphonic names were no longer in production and only available in the used or vintage market. Some loved the Andromeda, some hated it, most simply didn’t come to know it because of the Alesis name and the lack of music hits featuring this powerful polysynth. The Andromeda can be described equally as a polyphonic instrument and as a polyphonic modular synthesizer. That´s how complex or deep it can be.

The sounds are illustrated with pictures of my own Andromeda. There is no video, because those are old recordings, made long time ago before I started recording videos. The purpose of the recordings was exclusively for personal use, a way to remember sounds I liked. Some recordings may still be useful today in order to get familiar with the sound of the instruments. Some sounds use the internal effects, some use external processing.

Video sections:

00:23 Vangelis plucked
01:07 Vangelis pad
01:48 Vangelis lead
02:37 Andromeda lead, dot.com sequence
03:45 Crazy lead
06:32 Andromeda pad, Doepfer A-100 lead
08:25 Onboard analog distortion
10:56 Ambient
15:10 Pad with external FX
15:42 Lead with ring modulation
17:44 Noise and Sample/Hold"

Dervish D Vangelis Tribute by Paul Schilling

"A tribute to one of my musical Gods, Vangelis. His original comment for this track:

'inspired by the Dervish dancer who by his whirling realises the spiralling of the universe'"

The main synth sounds were created with Arturia Origin and CS-80V3 - mainly all Arturia Origin CS-80 modules, except for the Vangelis harmonica and lead sound, which is the Arturia CS-80V3. The percussion and pad towards the end are the DSI Prophet-6.
