X1L3 - circuit bent - synth mod - yamaha DD-10 drum machine with midi

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. X1L3 - Circuit bent Yamaha DD-10 - evolving percussion

Published on Jun 26, 2015 manufacturedZ3R0 .

"Improvised percussive set utilising the internal sounds and the additional oscillators that have been added. The oscillators can be set to drone or to follow the amp envelope of the output as shown here. A very simple drum pattern in order to show how much this can do on such a basic foundation."

X1L3 - Circuit bent Yamaha DD-10 - power electronics / noise wall

Published on Jun 26, 2015

"Improvised set of PE / noise wall and ambience generated with the embedded oscillators and fx in the DD-10.

Since the DD-10 is near 'unbendable' and seeing a modified one is a rarity i thought i'd give it a go and see what i could come up with."

"Circuit bent - midi retrofit - yamaha DD-10 drum machine.

Modifications and embedded circuitry:

Analogue resonant filter with high pass and low pass bands
Gain, resonance, low pass/high pass toggle and cutoff
A nice warm filter based on the synthacon.
Lot's of resonance and a unique character of it's own.
Violent, squelchy and crunchy when overdriven in this machine.

Digital 'death industrial' delay
Rate, noise, feedback, off/on toggle
This delay variant is based on the formula applied and the output of circuit bent delay pedals which have been sold in the past.
A versatile and if desired aggressive set up that can drift between ambience, echo and all out harsh noise wall and power electronics.

Analogue distortion
Dual mode distortion with diode clipping, filter and gain.

PSU - DC hum suppression circuitry
A regulated psu is now built into the machine.
This gives a stable and quiet power supply to both the drum machine and additional circuitry as well as
providing a quiet output and excellent noise floor.
Input voltage is +12V tip positive running 2 amps.
Please be aware of the amp rating of your adapter. It MUST run 2 amps or above.
Suitable adapters are available at low cost on ebay.
If shipping within the Uk i will suppply and adapter free of charge.

Master pitch control
Gives a large global pitch range - demonstrated in the demo videos The pitch has a high and low setting and a coarse and fine control. The fine control gives you conventional pitching of the drums, the coarse will take them down to vicious noise, droning and glitching. The drum machine now serves not only as a percussive instrument but a generator of abstract sounds and textures.

2 X Drone oscillator section.

The oscillators can be set up as drones or as amp envelope followers. In the first instance they turn the machine into an interesting drone and noise synth, with the features of the FX chain at hand to liven things up. In the second mode they add a tone to the drum patterns which will follow the amplitude of the pattern envelope and add a low end growl to the pattern when the distortion is engaged. Both modes are demonstrated in the videos below.

External input and mixer section.

An external input has been added which has line level and pre amp selection. You could if you wanted to plug a guitar or microphone into it now and apply the effects to the incoming signal. You can also mix this external signal in with the drum sounds and oscillators via the mixer section. Everyhting can be faded in and out as desired.

Cnc machined aluminium panel work with black anodize and engraved text and graphics

The DD-10 comes with midi as standard. It has a good and varied range of sounds and although it can't glitch as with a lot of other old DD drum machines it's been reworked here with a number of additional features to give it a warped character which can hold it's own when put side by side with the machines which are open to rom glitching. It's quite unique in how it behave and sounds now. They're something of a rarity in modified form due to how difficult they are to modify. With some forethought and synth diy application it can now hold it's own amongst the most unruly and bizzare of circuit bent instruments.

Watch the demo videos below for some examples of what it can do.

The first video is a very simple percussive pattern. Intentionally simple in order to show what the machine can do with something very basic. The second video is an improvised noise set. Constantly shifting and evolving. Quite violent at times. It shows what the DD-10 can now do outside of the confines of it's original drum machine format. Harsh noise wall, ambience, fx and power electronics are all within it's grasp."

8/2/23 Yamaha DD-10 + Metasonix RK8 & R-57 + Zerosum Inertia 6AS6 + Synthwerks FSR-2P + PCM 70

video upload by Cfpp0

"Yamaha DD-10 plays its 'Computer Swing' beat, with Intro/Fill 2.

The left output of the Yamaha goes straight into the audio in on the RK8. The right output of the Yamaha goes to the Synthwerks FSR-2P and then into CV in on the RK8 (though it is not used in this video). The mix audio out of the RK8 goes to the Mazzatron pass through to the EWI bay to the Samson bay to the Mackie Onyx 16:4, where it gets PCM 70 Gated palate on an aux. Two bands from the RK8 go to the Zerosum Inertia 6AS6 (it matters which goes to which input). The 6AS6 out goes to the Synthwerks FSR-2P and then to the R-57 and through the Mazzatron pass through into the EWI bay into the Samson bay into the Mackie. Towards the end, it actually sounds better when the Yamaha volume is reduced, so more or less input gain is critical to the RK8 like it is with Metasonix TM and TX boxes."

Roland HPD-15

You might remember that I picked up a Yamaha DD55 for Christmas this year. I originally bought it to just drum out percussive rhythms. Well, I've been using the MIDI out to control my synths, and I must say it's surprisingly refreshing. I never really thought of it as an alternative MIDI controller. I've also found that I want to play it more with my hands rather than the included drum sticks. There is a "hand mode" that makes the pads more sensitive, however I haven't gotten accustomed to it yet and my fingers begin to get sore fairly quickly. Enter the Roland HPD-15. I haven't tried one yet, but it does look it would fit the bill perfectly. I'm hearing good things about it over on the Waldorf list. Title link takes you to the Roland product page for the HPD-15. I pulled the image from one of them up for auction. I'm bookmarking this one for later.

Update: Be sure to check out the comments of this post and actually all posts for more. Huppo sent the following to the the Waldorf list where there is some discussion on the HPD-15:

" I also have a Yamaha DD-50
(predecessor to the DD-55 and quite similar) and a Roland Handsonic
HPD-10, The HPD-10 is the little brother to the HPD-15. I only had to
try the Handsonic once at a music store and immediately went home and
ordered one...it's that cool. Like many people, I am a compulsive
tabletop/steering wheel/thigh/knee drummer and the handsonic is made for
people like me. The pads, unlike the DD-50, are very sensitive to even
very light finger tapping. I haven't MIDIed it into my setup yet because
I am having too much fun with it as a standalone instrument. I got it to
add assorted percussive tidbits to my music and it works fantastic for that.

Until you play one it's hard to understand how expressive it can be. If
you play congas, for example, you can mute it with one hand and it will
respond approriately. If you slap onto the 'rim' you will get the rim
shot sound. It has aftertouch, which can be set to do all kinds of
things such as bend the sound or initiate a roll. It has a D-beam at the
top which can be set to trigger a sound or bend the notes or introduce
effects, etc. It has 64 built in 'kits' ranging from regular drum sets
(jazz, brushes, etc) to ethnic percussion like tabla and assorted
African, Asian and drums (the HPD-10 specialty) to electronic sets to
special effects groupings. You can also assemble your own sets, with all
the PCM drum sounds tunable and reassignable to any of the 10 pads, etc.
You can add two floor pedal triggers to the HPD-10 to make itmore like a
drum set, but can NOT play it with sticks.

I got it for a little over $500, new. Cheaper than the HPD-15 but not as
cheap as the DD-55 at about $150. The inportant distinction muct be made
that the Handsonic is to be played with the hands (hence the name..) and
the DD-55 is designed to be played with sticks. The pads aren't
sensitive enough to play very expressively with your hands and are much
too hard! It is fun, though, and in a pinch can be used to imitate a
drum kit since two foot triggers are included. For the money it's a
great toy and tool to have around, but I wouldn't put it in the same
class as the Handsonic offerings.

Circuit Bent DD-10

Published on Oct 26, 2016 Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"A circuit bent modified Yamaha DD-10 Drum Machine, built by Shane Williams of X1L3. Although a DD-10 won't yield to rom glitching, a number of features have been added to it to bring it up to spec with some of the more unruly machines listed in the shop. It takes on it's own unique character and is now unlike any of the others. Two oscillators which can be set up as drones or set to follow the amplitude envelope of the drum machine output, an external input with bufferd/none buffered input selection which allows you to feed line level equipment and passives such as guitars, mics and contact mics into the effects chain. The effects chain consists of a resonant filter with high pass and low pass bands, a digital delay which is open to abuse and is the heart of the machines ability to create ambient, harsh and noise wall sound scapes as well as data crash type glitching and strange effect. It has a dual mode distortion with diode clipping and direct modes. All of these can be used to manipulate the internal sounds as well as anything fed into the external input. The external input can be used while the machine is active and the machine, oscillators and external source can be mixed up as desired in the mixer section. The pitch control features a coarse and fine dial. When the pitch is dropped via the coarse control it dives into dirt and sludge which plays well with the filter and distortion.

Yamaha DD-10 Vintage Drum Machine (Japan,1988) SN 014712

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

You can find demos of the DD10 including some X1L3 circuit bent models in previous posts here.

"The Yamaha DD-10 is a great stereo digital drum machine with 8 touch sensitive drum pads, 98 preset rhythms played on some 26 or so drums. It comes with one demo pattern and the ability to store 2 user patterns.

It responds to MIDI and the channel for MIDI can be set. It runs on 9-12 volts and can be powered by C batteries (power supply or batteries not included!). We recommend using it with batteries because all compatible power supplies are always a bit noisy.

• TEMPO: The Tempo can be generated from a manual entry system where you merely tap a button and the unit plays at the tempo you are hitting the button.

• PADS: The pads are assignable from the kits available. All the pads can sound at the same time. The green purple and white buttons choose from the 3 sets of instruments available for each pad!

• MIDI: The Channel for the DD10 can be set by pressing the MIDI MODE button and the numeric buttons for the channel. Entering 00 means the DD10 will respond to each drum note sent to it individually - entering 99 means it will respond to a MIDI clock signal and program numbers will change which rhythm is playing. MIDI channel response is good and ability to swap to note mode or clock mode makes it easy to configure to any setup!

• RHYTHMS: The rhythms cover all the usual patterns. There are 100 patterns, two of which (98 and 99) are user programmable by using the pads! There is also a built in metronome.

• USER PATTERNS: The user patterns are selected using number 98 and 99 for the rhythm number and can be overdubbed as the sequence loops."

X1L3 - Circuit bent Yamaha DD-10 - R3 - Pitch and filter CV automation

Published on Jan 5, 2018 manufacturedZ3R0

"Third and final DD10 revision. Added CV control over pitch. Mostly robots doing the work here. The only laying on of hands being laying off of the delay at the end.

The DD is being triggered via midi from the daw and CV is coming in on two channels via a yarns midi to CV interface in the euro rig to animate the pitch and filter cutoff of the DD10. These are also controlled from the daw. Meandering set that shifts subtly for the durastion to let the DD shine through. Wearing the obvious nine inch nails fragile/spiral influences on both sleeves. The sound set of the DD10 is a wonderful thing for sexy old school art of self destruction dirt when pitched and filtered. As is a shining example here.

All percussion over the daw backing is the modified DD10. No additional fx applied."

Deep House on Vintage 80's Yamahas - Yamaha PSS580, PSS380, DD-10

Published on Sep 2, 2018 ChrisLody

"Had fun this afternoon rigging up a few old timers and making a bit of old school deep house, dawless style.

The DD-10 provides the drums with it's 2 programmable patterns, the PSS-580 provides the FM bass and organ sounds programmed into it's basic pattern sequencer and the PSS-380 provides the FM string sound. No external effects here, I like a nice dry house sound!"

Let's Get Lofi 4 - DD10 + Pss-580 + DIY Distortion + DIY Mixer

YouTube via ChrisLody
"The Yamaha DD-10 has got to be one of the most Lofi programmable drum machine ever made. You can program 2 separate 2 bar patterns using 26 different drum sounds with 2 levels of velocity. I used a preset on this vid though as I was feeling a bit lazy. Amazingly it only cost me £2 from a carboot sale. Yeay.

I ran that through a distortion circuit based on Craig Andertons distortion circuit as forund in Handmade Electronic Music by Nicolas Collins. I added a touch point I found by accident which feeds the first inverter with the ouput of the second which sounds quite cool. It creates some great squealing and choppy sounds. Nice.

I programmed the Pss-580 with an editor with a nice bass sound.

I ran them both through a passive mixer which was also in Nicolas Collins book.

Yeay, great fun!"

X1L3 - Circuit bent Yamaha DD-10 - R2 - evolving glitch percussion

Published on Feb 4, 2017 manufacturedZ3R0

"Updated version of the circuit bent DD10.

Sequenced via MIDI from propellerhead reason.

It can also be synced to midi clock if you want to program patterns and run them internally.

Replacing the original distortion found in the older works with a 'ruiner' hybrid ring modulator / distortion which gives it greater command of and a more dynamic range within the bizzare. Under pinned with a Korg monopoly drone, microwave pad and sid chip arpeggio. Shifting form clean to increasingly damaged as the set runs.

Adhereing to a formula of creating machines that are capable of hitting extremes but at the same time maintaining a very high degree of control. Once mastered they're fluid and capable and unique instruments. Perfect for those with a liking for experimentation, blured boundaries and none linear workings.
