Yamaha Synthesizers Launches Major OS Updates for MONTAGE, MODX and CP Stage Piano

BUENA PARK, Calif. (September 23, 2019) – Yamaha launched major operating system (OS) updates today to three Synthesizer product lines, integrating features, enhancements and content based on feedback from the community of synth artists.

As part of the larger celebration of the 45th anniversary of Yamaha Synthesizers, the company unveiled the enhanced operating systems MONTAGE OS v3.0, MODX OS v2.0 and CP OS v1.2. These new OS versions are designed to help music makers get the most out of their instrument and take inspiration from input submitted to Yamaha by users.

The flagship Yamaha synth MONTAGE gets its sixth free OS update in v3.0, a first for any Yamaha synthesizer, and its more compact counterpart MODX takes on a similar array of added features in its v2.0 OS. The biggest new feature is a pattern sequencer, ideal for creating and playback both linear songs or pattern-based arrangements with real time arrangement control. There’s also an improved synth engine, with Virtual Circuitry Modeling Mini Filter and Mini Boost effects for vintage synth-style sounds. Yamaha has also added a Wave Folder effect for adding complexity creating more experimental sounds as well as a high-speed LFO for even more creative possibilities. Improved MIDI capability with a hybrid MIDI mode makes integrating MONTAGE or MODX with MIDI gear even easier. In addition to these major new features and capabilities, MONTAGE OS v3.0 and MODX OS v2.0 both come with a collection of new Performance content created by Yamaha artists and sound designers.

OS v1.2 for the Yamaha CP stage pianos represents the second major OS upgrade for this product line. Responding to user input, Yamaha has added 30 new Voices to the CP Sub Section. The foot controller and mod lever now have more assignments and range parameters so musicians can have them work within a chosen range. Quick navigation features like LIVE SET Reset and Quick Enter have been added to streamline the CP’s interface even further.
“We constantly receive great feedback from our users,” said Nate Tschetter, product marketing manager, Yamaha Synthesizers. “It’s great to be able to realize that input with three new OS updates. We hope these new enhancements inspire more music-making with MONTAGE, MODX and CP and look forward to helping people get the most out of their instruments.”

Pricing and Availability
Yamaha MONTAGE OS v3.0 and CP OS v1.2 are currently available via free download to all MONTAGE and CP stage piano users. MODX OS v2.0 will be available via free download to all MODX users on October 25. For details see http://4wrd.it/45THOSUPDATES

Yamaha presents our next-generation flagship Synthesizer: MONTAGE M. Featuring three engines that create a variety of sounds – ultra-realistic instruments, vintage analog synths, and cutting-edge FM synths. For keyboardists, synthesists, and pianists, MONTAGE M seamlessly bridges stage and studio, unlocking new possibilities for sound, control and workflow."

NEW AN-X ENGINE

A revolution in authentic analog sound, control and behavior, the AN-X engine recreates the warm, classic sound of an analog synthesizer with a host of sophisticated modulation options.

・Three Oscillators with 5 waveforms (Saw 1, Saw2, Triangle, Square and Sine) and Noise Generator

・Two filters with 10 filter types

・Pulse width modulation

・Oscillator Self Sync

・Ring modulation, FM, and wave shaper

・Amp EG with drive

・LFO for both amplitude and filter,

・Voltage drift and aging settings to simulate vintage synth behavior

Integrated into the Motion Control system, the AN-X Engine allows you to create expressive, unique analog sounds to your heart’s content.

Improved AWM2
Experience realism and detail with MONTAGE M’s improved AWM2. Offering an incredible 128 Elements per part, AWM2 allows for smoother transitions, giving you an expansive canvas for ultra-high-definition sound creation, especially for “nameable” sounds such as piano and strings.

400 NOTE TOTAL POLYPHONY
A significant upgrade from the original MONTAGE’s 256 notes, MONTAGE M offers up to 400 notes of polyphony across its three engines:

・128 notes for AWM2 Preset Waveform Parts

・128 notes for AWM2 User Waveform Parts

・128 notes for FM-X Parts

・16 notes for AN-X Parts

And more about sound
AND MORE
[PRESET WAVE AND FLASH MEMORY UPGRADE] MONTAGE M offers twice the memory over its predecessor with an increase from 5.67GB to 9.97GB of Preset Wave memory, and an increase from 1.75 to 3.8GB of User flash memory. Plus, you’ll find a host of new sounds and instruments, including pianos, orchestral instruments, drums, and more!

[FM-X] MONTAGE M rekindles the Yamaha legacy of expressive and dynamic FM Synthesis with its 8-operator FM-X engine, offering a wide variety of diverse tones: from crisp and bell-like, to edgy and aggressive, to mellow and evolving. This is an excellent complement to the AWM2 and AN-X engines.

[VCM ROTARY AND DRAWBAR BEHAVIOR] Using sophisticated modeling technology, the VCM Rotary Speaker effect simulates the rich and enveloping motion of a classic rotary speaker cabinet. Plus, the new organ drawbar fader setting simulates the vintage “pull out” drawbar organ behavior.

[16 LIBRARY LOCATIONS] With 16 Library slots at your disposal, you can house up to 10,240 additional Performances (that’s in addition to the over 2,700 performances in the presets), facilitating quick searches by Category, Name and Attributes.

[PURE ANALOG CIRCUIT 2] The upgraded Pure Analog Circuit included in MONTAGE M reduces noise and improves the dynamic range, crosstalk, low-frequency phase, and distortion rate, resulting in clearer sound at all volumes. You’ll also find the sound has more detailed low-mids and presence.

GEX ACTION WITH POLYPHONIC AFTERTOUCH (MONTAGE M8x ONLY)
Available exclusively on MONTAGE M8x, GEX Action elevates your performance and sound creation with Polyphonic Aftertouch – a revered synth control found in the legendary CS-80 and DX1. Polyphonic Aftertouch allows you to individual modulate held notes with pressure. GEX also provides key repetition behavior typically found in grand pianos.

NEW PERFORMANCE CONTROLS
MONTAGE M introduces new performance controls: a 5-segment ribbon controller with dedicated HOLD button, a new KEYBOARD HOLD button for sustaining chords while using knobs to edit, and a Portamento on/off button and dedicated Portamento time knob.

DEDICATED KEYBOARD, PART AND SCENE CONTROL
You’ll find dedicated Keyboard, Part and Scene Control buttons to control 16 Parts per Performance. This intuitive control, particularly beneficial for live performances, improves overall usability and adds dimension to each Performance.

AND MORE
[HIGH-RESOLUTION CONTROL] All the Performance Controls – from the Keyboard and Faders to the Super Knob and Sustain, as well as the Sound Engine, are now in High Resolution. Because of the fine resolution, you’ll find the MONTAGE M behaves in a smoother and more “analog” way.

[MOTION CONTROL SYNTHESIS ENGINE]This groundbreaking engine allows you to interact with sounds in a variety of ways, including Motion Sequences, which dynamically automate synth and effect parameters, and can even be synchronized to tempo; the Super Knob, which controls dozens of modulations in a single gesture; the Envelope Follower, which modulates sound from the A/D input or another Part; and many, many more ways!

[NEW AND IMPROVED LED LIGHTS AND COLORS] Enhanced LED lights and colors on MONTAGE M faders, Performance, Live Set and Category Search offer visible, instant feedback, vastly improving the user interface.

WORKFLOW
Expanded Creativity

EXPANDED SOFTSYNTH PLUGIN (E.S.P.) (COMING EARLY 2024)
A game-changer for musicians, the Expanded Softsynth Plugin (E.S.P.) replicates the MONTAGE M in your favorite Digital Workstation (DAW). Free for all registered MONTAGE M owners, E.S.P. allows you to create, edit and mix MONTAGE M Performances anywhere you happen to be – without the hardware – offering an unprecedented level of stage and studio integration. We are planning on releasing E.S.P. in Early 2024. The first version will have all the MONTAGE M sound while being limited to basic editing. The full version will be available in Summer 2024.

FASTER, MORE INTUITIVE NAVIGATION
Upgraded navigation enables quick, intuitive sound editing and operation. You’ll find features like a new 512 x 64 LCD screen, 6 touchscreen display knobs, and a PAGE JUMP button that moves what’s in the LCD screen over to the larger 7” TFT Color touchscreen for deeper editing. And the dedicated Navigation button shows an overview of a Performance. Just touch a graphical object in the screen to jump to that parameter for deeper editing. The dedicated Navigation button allows you go directly from the “surface” of a sound to the deepest part.

USB MIDI AND MULTICHANNEL AUDIO INTERFACE
Simplifying your studio setup, MONTAGE M offers a USB MIDI and multichannel 32 output/6 input audio interface. Streamline MIDI recording, virtual instrument monitoring, and multi-track audio recording through a single USB cable, so you can spend more time being creative.

AND MORE
[FASTER UI] MONTAGE M’s UI is significantly speedier than the previous generation. Plus, the overall look is cleaner and easier to see.

[CATEGORY SEARCH] Search for Performances by Category (Piano, Keyboard, etc.), Sub Category (Acoustic, Vintage, etc.),Name, and Attributes (AWM2, FM-X, AN-X, etc.).

[TWO USB-TO-DEVICE PORTS] Allows simultaneous connection of a flash drive (or drives!) and USB MIDI controllers.

[DEDICATED DAW REMOTE BUTTON] Use your MONTAGE M as a hardware controller for DAWs such as Cubase, Logic, ProTools and Live. Control the mixer, transport, softsynth plugins and more.

[NEW SHIFT BUTTONS] Two new Shift buttons make it effortless to access secondary functions, increasing overall functionality.

[COLOR-CODED BUTTONS and SLIDER LAMPS] Backlit LIVE SET and CATEGORY buttons are colored differently and clearly show mode function. New slider lamps show red LED value increments, while active Parts are illuminated in blue.

"Yamaha YC61 Stage Keyboard Brings Classic Organ and Vintage Keys Back to the Stage

BUENA PARK, Calif. (January 9, 2020) — Yamaha today introduced the YC61 Stage Keyboard, a new organ-focused instrument combining the sought-after organ sounds of popular music with the sonic versatility and real-time control today’s keyboardists demand, all backed by legendary Yamaha quality.

Reproducing authentic organ sound, control and expressiveness in a compact package has been elusive for keyboard players. Using proprietary Yamaha technology, the YC61 provides an authentic and expressive playing experience.
The YC61 employs a newly developed Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM) Organ engine. VCM models the behavior of vintage electronics at the component level. This allows realistic organ character sound along with familiar and modern controls organ players will appreciate. Authenticity is further enhanced by a new VCM Rotary Speaker effect, capturing the two-speed, physically spinning speaker that’s as much a part of the organ sound as a guitar amp is to an electric guitar.

As on the original instruments, the musician has full command of the sound via drawbars, percussion, rotary speaker speed and more for an expressive and unique sound. Organ aficionados will appreciate the ability to personalize “under the hood” organ and rotary speaker settings like drawbar leakage, key click, rotor speed up and more. An all-new 61-note waterfall keyboard is true to the organ legacy and makes for smooth rock and jazz playing techniques such as “palm smears.”

The YC61 goes beyond organ sounds. Two comprehensive “Keys” sections offer authentic acoustic pianos, soulful electric pianos, realistic strings and brass, analog-style synths, and more. Dedicated effects like delay, chorus, distortion and more give keyboardists the ability to quickly create new, inspiring sounds on the fly. This means the YC61 could take the place of two or more other instruments, simplifying keyboardists’ setups and reducing load-in time.

Thanks to its aluminum construction, the YC61 is as rugged and roadworthy as it is lightweight (under 7kg/16 pounds!) and compact.

“The organ is the original keyboard, and in some ways, the original synthesizer,” said Nate Tschetter, manager, Synthesizer Marketing, Yamaha. “It always adds a soulful sound to the music, regardless of genre. We hope YC61 provides that essence of soulfulness to keyboard players through its sound and controls.”

Pricing and Availability

The Yamaha YC61 Stage Keyboard (MSRP: $2,499) will ship to retailers in June 2020. For more information, visit Yamaha.io/yc61"

Yamaha Synth Space History | VL1 | Dom Sigalas

video upload by Yamaha Synths Official

"Come along as Dom Sigalas walks us through the ins and outs of the groundbreaking Yamaha VL1 virtual acoustic synthesizer.

The VL1 was the world's first musical instrument to use physical modelling. It was first released in 1994 and included 49 keys with aftertouch, 128 programs (voices), a breath controller jack, and much more. This duophonic synthesizer simulates the complex vibrations, resonances, reflections and other acoustic phenomena that occur in reed and wind instruments – a completely new approach to synthesis.

Synth Space History features demos of historic Yamaha Synths and Stage instruments."

Press release follows:

BUENA PARK, Calif. (April 3, 2023) - Today, Yamaha releases a new OS update for the YC Stage Keyboard line. OS v1.3 includes new sounds, features and workflow enhancements that make the YC Series even more versatile.

New sounds lead the way in YC OS v1.3. An expressive Hamburg Grand, intimate Felt Piano from the CP Series, and an all-new CP80 sampled from the Yamaha Synth Space collection have been added. Also, the invaluable YamahaSynth IdeaScale community requested the CP80 Voice which delivers the expressive bite you would expect from this classic stage piano. In addition to the new Piano Voices, are 32 new FM Voices. Carefully curated by our London R&D team, you’ll find 16 classic DX7 basses, brass and pads and 16 modern FM sounds for contemporary genres.

The new features added in OS v1.3 improve control and workflow. Additionally, contributions from the customer-driven YamahaSynth IdeaScale community are noted:

Vibrato and Chorus for FM Organs: Vibrato and Chorus effects are now available for FM Organs, and the F2 and F3 types match the classic effects found in vintage 60s combo organs (YamahaSynth IdeaScale).

Pan to Parts Settings: Freely adjust pan for each Part separately for greater stereo mix flexibility. (YamahaSynth IdeaScale).

A/B Parameter Link Function: Press and hold the Keys A/B button and you’ll get control of Volume, Tone, Filter/EG and Effect settings for both Parts simultaneously. Great for controlling both Parts when set up in a Split or Layer.

Rotary Speed Hold: Before OS v1.3, Rotary Speaker speed settings were saved in the Live Set. This new setting allows you to keep the Rotary Speaker speed settings the same regardless of the Live Set. Studio Rotary Speaker Type Default: All organ Live Set sounds using the Rotary Speaker effect now default to the Studio type introduced in OS v1.2.

Join the Yamaha synthesizer team on a Tech Talk on Tuesday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. PDT/10:00 p.m. CET to learn more about the latest software update - https://yamahasynth.com/learn/events/tech-talk-s4e1

"UVI introduces a massive library inspired by four 90s classic keyboards – the Yamaha SY77, the Korg M1, the Roland D50 and the Ensoniq VFX : UVI Digital Synsations

A NEW BREED

In the late 80's and early 90's the synthesizer landscape began to change. A new breed of keyboards began appearing in shops, records and on stage; matte black behemoths eschewing the familiar knob arrays for uniform clusters of discrete buttons and glowing green LCD screens. They signaled more than a shift in interaction with our musical counterparts‚ they ushered in the era of the digital synth.

To those willing to forgo the immediacy and ease-of-editing of the analog synth world these keyboards offered amazing features for the time; massive polyphony, extensive on-board sequencers and pattern memory, removable storage and digital effects. In addition to the immediate benefits of digital processing some of these keyboards also dawned innovative hybrid synthesis techniques, combining sample playback with classic methods allowing synthesists and musicians the opportunity to explore new sonic territory.

4 CLASSICS, MASSIVE PATCH LIBRARY

The possibilities with a few of these classics was more than we could bear and became the inspiration for our new project, Digital Synsations. We took 4 classic keyboards from the era and set our sound designers loose, tasking them to return with boundary-pushing sounds‚and they did. Digital Synsations includes over 500 patches expertly programmed on a fully restored Yamaha SY77, Korg M1, Roland D50 and Ensoniq VFX‚ used by many of the greats including Depeche Mode, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, Vangelis, Brian Eno, Toto, 808 State, Jean Michael Jarre and more.

PRISTINE SOUND, DEEPLY EDITABLE

We deeply multi-sampled these custom patches using top-shelf equipment and edited them to perfection before sending them off for professional mastering. These sonics became the foundation for our new hybrid instrument and combined with the UVI Engine give you the true character of these classic synths with all of the peculiarities and programming by products intact. Not only that but you get them in an extremely easy to use and fast to edit environment complete with all the features you expect from a modern virtual instrument.

If you're looking for a new take on the 90's sound or just some new classic synth inspiration then look no further.

SYNSATIONAL INSPIRATIONS

The SY77 combines next generation FM synthesis with 16-bit sampled sounds from internal memory or stored on removable ROM cards. The AFM engine on these synths allows you to freely apply filters and envelopes to any of the sampled sounds and then roll the resulting waveforms back into the FM algorithm prior to further filtering. This novel approach, dubbed RCM hybrid synthesis, can be used to yield extremely versatile sonic results.

The M1 employs AI (Advanced Integrated) synthesis, a hybrid synthesis engine that allows the creation of sounds made up of 16-bit multisamples or harmonic tables generated from by digital analysis from sample data similar to additive synthesis. These methods can be employed in parallel for even greater sonic diversity.

The VFX used a wavetable like synthesis method similar to that of the PPG Wave. Up to 6 waves can combined and layered into a single patch which feeds an impressive array of dual multi-mode filters, three 11-stage envelopes, an LFO and a 24-bit effects processor. Advanced parameter mapping allows up to 15 sources to be used for extremely complex modulations and sound shaping.

The D50 provided a purely digital signal path allowing the combination of 8-bit PCM samples with linear arithmetic synthesis to produce single hybrid sounds or complex cross modulations between the two. Furthermore you could layer two of these sounds together into a patch for a total of 4 digital OSCs. Each OSC could be independently programmed resulting in a remarkable variety of tonal possibilities.

Yamaha Introduces the MODX+

video upload by Yamaha Synths Official

It looks like the rumors were wrong on this one - no AN-X engine. Instead we get the AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) sample and synthesis engine, and a pure FM-X (Frequency Modulation) engine.

"Check out the compact, lightweight MODX+ synthesizers, designed to help you take control of your sound and stand out on every stage, studio or stream.

MODX+ is powered by the same innovative technologies found in our flagship MONTAGE synthesizer including the AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) sample and synthesis engine and a pure FM-X (Frequency Modulation) synth engine for amazing sound playback and complex sound design.

MODX+ Motion Control brings the sophisticated automation of music production to live performances by giving you simultaneous control of up to 128 parameters. So you can shape live sound like a conductor commands an orchestra."

SOUND

The most important element of any instrument is the sound. MODX+ makes all elements of your music sound amazing. MODX+ uses the same technology that powers the flagship MONTAGE: 128 notes of AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) sample and synthesis polyphony for stunning emulative acoustic instruments, synth sounds and drums. MODX+ also features 128 notes of FM-X (Frequency Modulation) polyphony - a unique, expressive, highly-programmable synthesis technology for dynamic, electro-modern music creation.

The AWM2 engine is exclusive to Yamaha synthesizers and offers much more than just sample playback. Each of the 16 AWM2 Parts feature eight programmable synthesizers with 18 different filter types, amplitude, pitch and filter envelope generators, nine LFOs, 3-band EQ and a dedicated dual insert effect with Virtual Circuitry Modeling.

The FM-X engine: Everything you love about the iconic DX7 meets the latest Yamaha innovations. FM-X produces classic ‘80s or cutting-edge EDM synthesizer sound with incredible dynamic range, power and fidelity. MODX+ goes well beyond the capabilities of the original DX7 with an 8-operator FM architecture, 128-note polyphony, many filter types and more. All with Motion Control for ever-evolving and changing textures to create sounds no one has ever heard before.

256-NOTE TOTAL POLYPHONY
MODX+ features 128-note stereo AWM2 polyphony and 128-notes of FM-X polyphony. Due to the unique architecture of MODX+ and MONTAGE, this polyphony is always available without latency or compromising other features.

Smart Morph enables morphing between FM-X sounds. Its sophisticated A.I. algorithm creates an interactive morphing map from up to eight FM-X sounds. You can “play” this map from the touchscreen or use the Super Knob to move between two points. The result is a staggering number of interesting and interactive new sounds.

New Yamaha EMX Powered Mixers

Not a synth, but you can definitely plug your synths into them. Thought some of you might be interested and Yamaha is a valued supporter of MATRIXSYNTH.

These new models:

- Incorporate powerful new professional features as well as an updated look and interface

- Provide better performance and ease of use than ever before

- Appeal to a wide range of users and a wide range of applications — bands and mobile DJ performances in small- to mid-sized events, worship, nightclub, retail business installations, etc."

The official press release:

"Yamaha EMX Series Compact Powered Mixers Deliver Powerful Performance, Greater Portability and Updated Look

BUENA PARK, Calif. (June 23, 2016) – Yamaha today unveiled the latest models in the company’s popular EMX series powered mixer lineup, which incorporate powerful new professional features as well as an updated look and interface.
Since its debut 30 years ago, the EMX Series has earned its stellar reputation by providing users having little or no live sound reinforcement experience with a compact, reliable, versatile and easy-to-use mixer requiring minimum setup and connections. Yamaha is the best-selling line of powered mixers in the U.S.

Like their predecessors, each of the new models – the EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 – seamlessly integrates a mixer, power amplifiers and digital effects into a single chassis, requiring only speakers and microphones to realize a fully functioning sound system.

The EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 all feature Class-D power amps delivering 500, 630 and 710 Watts respectively of power, offering lightweight, yet powerful sound reinforcement options for bands and mobile DJ performances in small- to mid-sized events, as well as for worship, nightclub or retail business applications.

All models include legendary Yamaha SPX effects for hall, plate, room and echo reverbs. The EMX2 and the EMX5 include an updated 1-Knob Master EQ™ sound contour control to easily adjust the overall sound frequency balance. The EMX7 features a flex-type graphic equalizer (Flex9GEQ) that allows the user to select up to nine bands out of a total of 31 for fine tuning±15 dB.

A new Feedback Suppressor incorporating proprietary Yamaha digital technology instantly eliminates annoying feedback with the single push of a button.

Inspired by the Yamaha STAGEPAS 600i Portable PA System, the entry level 10-input EMX2 features 500 Watts (2 x 250 Watts) of amplification, four high quality microphone pre-amps and three stereo line inputs. This model is surprisingly compact (14.8” x 5.8” x 8.7”), making it easy to fit along with speakers in the trunk of a small car.
Moving up the line, the EMX5 and EMX7 each offer 12 input channels and can output to 630 Watts and 710 Watts respectively. Users can connect up to eight microphones or line-level devices, such as keyboards and CD players and portable MP3 players.

The EMX5 and EMX7 are housed in an impact-resistant, powder-coated metal chassis for a robust, yet extremely portable design that allows for convenient operation on either a tabletop or in a rack (rack mount brackets available separately). Large handles on the front and back of the body serve double duty, making the mixers easy to lift while protecting knobs and terminals on the surface of the chassis from impact or pressure.

While these mixers are capable of higher than expected sound pressure levels (SPL), they actually consume less power than previous models with more compact form factors.

'The Yamaha EMX Series has a proven track record of excellence, offering a winning combination of great sound, affordability and portability,” said Nithin Cherian, marketing manager, Pro Audio division, Yamaha Corporation of America. “Each of these new models provide better performance and ease of use than ever before, and will appeal to a wide range of users in a wide range of applications.'

All three models feature Phantom Power to allow the user to plug in condenser microphones for higher audio quality and better frequency range. For even greater flexibility, input 4 on the mixers features a high-impedance input for acoustic guitar or bass without the need for external processing.

And because each of the EMX Series models incorporates the amplifiers, users can easily connect passive speakers or add a Yamaha DXS Series Powered sub-woofer via a single connection, for configuring a PA system that requires a more prominent bass performance.

Pricing and Availability
The EMX2, EMX5 and EMX7 will ship in August; price to be determined.
