Black Corporation Introduces EXPANDER MK2

Press release follows:

Black Corporation is thrilled to introduce EXPANDER MK2, a revolutionary tabletop or 6U rack mount effects processor combining the magic of both analog and digital worlds. A major evolutionary leap from our original EXPANDER, MK2 takes multi-effects processing to new heights, boasting an incredibly flexible effects system that covers everything from reverb and delay to modulation and overdrive, and much more.

With line and HI-Z inputs, the EXPANDER MK2 is perfect for a diverse range of music producers, synthesizer users, guitarists, bassists, and live musicians looking to expand their sonic horizons. The stereo and dual-mono routings offer an immense range of connections, with each channel having its own distinct effects chain. The intuitive routing matrix array of LED tact switches lets you create an endless variety of effects chains, from sending a single source to multiple effects in parallel, to cascading them in series.

EXPANDER MK2’s interface takes a knob per function approach, allowing you to dive right into new sonic territories. You can easily save and recall all your settings as presets, with complete MIDI CC functionality, foot switch, and expression pedal inputs adding even more control possibilities.

Delay: The delay section is MIDI syncable, offering both digital and analog options. The digital delay is based on the legendary PCM42, with the same discrete 12-bit ADC/DACs, optical compressor, and filters as the original. Guidance from Gary Hall, the engineer behind the original unit, has resulted in a sound as close to the original rack as possible, with the added benefit of a modern CPU and expanded memory. The analog delay, using analog BBD circuitry, offers a warmer tone with up to 820 milliseconds of delay time. Both delays feature panning controls for added spatial motion.

Reverb: As on the delay, EXPANDER MK2 boasts both digital and analog options. The digital reverb is based on the lush and spacious 224, faithfully recreated by our friends at Meris. The spring reverb uses two 17” tanks (one for each channel) each equipped with an EQ and digital pre-delay section.

Modulator: The modulator is a ring modulator section with enhanced functionality. The first being a quadrant multiplier ring modulator for clean, modern silicon chip-based sounds, and the second, a vintage-style, harmonically rich transformer and diode based ring. The modulator also includes a reference oscillator with an attack and release envelope controlling its pitch, similar to that on DECKARDS’S DREAM’s predecessor, the CS-80.

Chorus: The chorus section features two distinct BBD chorus lines, with manual controls for speed and depth, to add subtle stereo widening or intense, turbulent animation. For fans of the classic four-button chorus, those presets are in there too! Phaser: The phaser section includes an analog OTA- based 12-stage phaser circuit for warm, psychedelic phaser effects, as well as an optical phaser to get a classic Krautrock sound.

Insert / Resonator: The Insert / Resonator section allows you to patch in outboard effects into any part of the effects chain. The resonator component can be used as a subtle EQ to sculpt the tone or can be modulated by the LFO section to create animated resonant or panning effects. The insert returns and sends can occur pre or post-resonator and can also be used as an extra input and output to route multiple signals. When used in parallel, these can turn EXPANDER MK2 into a 4-channel effects processor.

Overdrive: The overdrive section uses Korg’s groundbreaking Nu-Tube micro tube technology to add subtle texture and warmth to any sound, from guitars, synths, drum machines or vocals to anything in between. When pushed further, it can create screaming distortion, perfect for anyone looking to turn up the heat.

LFO: The LFO section features a multitude of LFO’s routable to nearly any destination of the other sections, adding life and movement throughout the signal path.

A convenient selection of connections on the back panel of EXPANDER MK2 includes balanced inputs and outputs, stereo send and return (via individual 1/4′′ jacks or using a common DB25 connector), expression and switch pedals, USB, and DIN MIDI. Additionally, the front includes a convenient HI-Z input for guitarists or any instrumentalist with quieter outputs to plug and play right away. EXPANDER MK2’s natural wood sides can be switched out for included rack ears.

EXPANDER MK2 is a vintage effects inspired powerhouse pushing the boundaries of sound in a

robust, studio form factor. Its hands on capabilities and nearly endless routing options make it an outstanding companion to any production or live set up!"

Black Corporation Xerxes Analog Polyphonic Synthesizer

Published on Mar 24, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"Inspired by the rare Elka Synthex, Xerxes is the newest polysynth from Black Corporation. Bringing the sound and techniques of the Synthex to a wider audience than ever before, Xerxes provides new access to a wide range of tones from edgy to atmospheric.

Xerxes has a sound that feels distinctly from the 1980s, capable of rich, warbling strings, punchy brass, and ethereal pads. It exudes a fizzy, sparking high-end energy that makes strings come alive and sync sounds bite through any texture. But it truly excels at sounds that make use of its extensive modulation matrix—creating lurching, grinding modulated textures that meld its oscillators' raw grit with its filters' smooth, resonant response.

And like the Deckard's Dream and Kijimi before it, the Xerxes is also fully MPE-compatible—making it one of the most expressive and playable analog synths available.

Black Corporation - Deckard's Voice

video by SchneidersLaden

"The Deckard’s Voice Module by Black Corporation is a single voice from their Deckard’s Dream eight-voice poly synth. Based on the legendary Yamaha CS80 this module has a high density of functions to offer and a very characteristic sound. Even though it is a single voice it can create that dreamy cinematic sounds if you add the right amount of reverb.
The module features all you could wish for – VCO and noise, high-pass and low-pass filters, two envelopes, a modulation LFO with random and a VCA with velocity response. Additionally, most of the building blocks can be used on their own due to the many inputs and outputs.
All in all, a unique and versatile module that will give you lots of flexibility in the way it can be used in your system. And it sounds great."

Antonus 2600 + Step Brother + Black Corporation ISE NIN demo jam

video upload by wutierson

"Here is a demo jam using Antonus 2600 Original Size version, with Step Brother on top and the Black Corporation ISE-NIN. All the track is done in realtime, no multitrack recording. Antonus 2600 and Step Brother is making the different sequencer sounds, the bass drum, and the hihat sound plus some other sound during the perfomance. ISE-NIN (played with midi keyboard controller) is playing two sound using the Upper and Lower layer features like the Roland Jupiter 8, one layer is for the string-pad sound and the other layer is for the arppegio-sequence-effects during the performance. Is not easy for a poly synth to play face to face without being surpassed with a synth like a 2600 and the power of the ISE-NIN makes a very good partner in sound presence and quality with the 2600 and Step Brother. I know that the demos should be short and direct but every time that I play instruments like this the time goes fast and simply at the end I don't care nothing more than enjoy playing, so I'm sorry of the demo is too long or if nobody will listen it or just make jumps during transport bar. This instruments are a true joy of play and this is the result of it. Hope somebody enjoy the sounds and can have a better idea of the nice combo that are.
Also booth instruments shares a nice orange colour details, lovely combination!"

Black Corporation ISE-NIN versus Roland System 8 Jupiter 8 plug out

video upload by MIDERA

"A friend of mine was very generous and loaned me his Black Corporation ISE-NIN so that I could compare it with my Roland System 8.

My main thoughts: they’re almost identical. The small differences felt extremely nitpicky. The ARP on the ISE-NIN is much nicer, with a longer gate time, and it just sounded richer? Hard to describe, but you can hear it in the video.

Honestly, this is a horrific comparison video, I freely admit it, but I felt pressed for time and didn’t want to spend too much time on it. So if you’re wondering why this is so crude, well, just don’t let perfect get in the way of awful, that’s all I have to say.

I talk towards the end about what my thoughts are - but really, the video was made just so you could hear the differences, not because I think you should buy either one.

Truth be told, I think the Prophet 5/10 is a better synth than the Jupiter 8 (or System 8, ISE-NIN). Different flavors perhaps. I think it’s reasonable to say that the System 8 and ISE-NIN are great alternatives to the Jupiter 8. If I could grab a Jupiter 8 for under $10K, I probably would, but I also think, based on the sounds out of these synths, I actually don’t think I would necessarily love it.

I’m impressed with the System 8, being completely digital, and seemingly able to compete with more accurate representations of the Jupiter 8. I also worry part of the differences could have been chalked up to my lack of skill, so you must take what I’m saying with a grain of salt.

Well, hope you enjoy the video anyway."

Black Corporation Announces DECKARD’S DREAM MK2

via Black Corporation

"We are excited to announce DECKARD’S DREAM MK2!

MK2 delivers everything the previous versions of DDRM have done in a new light, sleek tabletop unit with wood sides or rack-ears (both included). It also brings additional controls over Sustain modes and length.
DECKARD’S DREAM (DDRM), features eight voices, each with two identical layered parts consisting of a completely analog voltage controlled oscillator made with discrete waveshapers, analog lowpass and highpass filter, each with their own cutoff and resonance settings, noise generator, unique multisegment filter envelope, and VCA + ADSR envelope. Each layer also features its own independent programming section for MPE-based velocity and polyphonic aftertouch control of its filter cutoff and amplifier settings.

DDRM’s perfomance section features global pitch control with coarse & fine-tuning sliders, layer 2 detune slider, independent keyboard range control for each layer, mix balancing between layer 1 and layer 2, global filter cutoff and resonance offsets, and a global LFO to control both layers’ filter/pitch/amplifiers simultaneously.
DDRM was created with full expressive performance control in mind, boasting programming sections with global MPE-based control over LFO parameters + pitchbend, as well as global key tracking control over the filter and amplifier settings of both layers. Finally, there is a global portamento/glissando slider affecting both layers simultaneously. The level of expressive control these parameters give over performance is something found in very few synthesizers, and the results are stunning!

DDRM features full MIDI control and the ability to store 128 presets per bank across 3 banks, integrating this classic synth concept seamlessly into the future of your modern studio needs.

$3749 / deposit is $1199, delivery is expected in June 2020.

Price includes free worldwide shipping with Japan Post International Priority. Courier delivery (UPS, DHL, FedEx etc) is available but will be charged at an additional cost. @ Shibuya, Tokyo"

Or is it SN 1603? See the pics below.

Note the seller for this one is Pittsburgh Modular so likely safe. :)

"Black Corporation Kijimi was purchased new by Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers for use in our studio. We used this unit on our studio for a few months before it was packed up.

** There is a scratch on the top of the case. It is highlighted in one of the photos.

** "Kijimi" is written on the power adapter in silver sharpie so I would not confuse it with other power adapters. This is visible in one of the photos.

The sale includes everything that we received with the unit. Original box, power adapter, and documentation. The synthesizer will be double boxed and shipped from Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers.
