Black Corporation Introduces EXPANDER MK2

Press release follows:

Black Corporation is thrilled to introduce EXPANDER MK2, a revolutionary tabletop or 6U rack mount effects processor combining the magic of both analog and digital worlds. A major evolutionary leap from our original EXPANDER, MK2 takes multi-effects processing to new heights, boasting an incredibly flexible effects system that covers everything from reverb and delay to modulation and overdrive, and much more.

With line and HI-Z inputs, the EXPANDER MK2 is perfect for a diverse range of music producers, synthesizer users, guitarists, bassists, and live musicians looking to expand their sonic horizons. The stereo and dual-mono routings offer an immense range of connections, with each channel having its own distinct effects chain. The intuitive routing matrix array of LED tact switches lets you create an endless variety of effects chains, from sending a single source to multiple effects in parallel, to cascading them in series.

EXPANDER MK2’s interface takes a knob per function approach, allowing you to dive right into new sonic territories. You can easily save and recall all your settings as presets, with complete MIDI CC functionality, foot switch, and expression pedal inputs adding even more control possibilities.

Delay: The delay section is MIDI syncable, offering both digital and analog options. The digital delay is based on the legendary PCM42, with the same discrete 12-bit ADC/DACs, optical compressor, and filters as the original. Guidance from Gary Hall, the engineer behind the original unit, has resulted in a sound as close to the original rack as possible, with the added benefit of a modern CPU and expanded memory. The analog delay, using analog BBD circuitry, offers a warmer tone with up to 820 milliseconds of delay time. Both delays feature panning controls for added spatial motion.

Reverb: As on the delay, EXPANDER MK2 boasts both digital and analog options. The digital reverb is based on the lush and spacious 224, faithfully recreated by our friends at Meris. The spring reverb uses two 17” tanks (one for each channel) each equipped with an EQ and digital pre-delay section.

Modulator: The modulator is a ring modulator section with enhanced functionality. The first being a quadrant multiplier ring modulator for clean, modern silicon chip-based sounds, and the second, a vintage-style, harmonically rich transformer and diode based ring. The modulator also includes a reference oscillator with an attack and release envelope controlling its pitch, similar to that on DECKARDS’S DREAM’s predecessor, the CS-80.

Chorus: The chorus section features two distinct BBD chorus lines, with manual controls for speed and depth, to add subtle stereo widening or intense, turbulent animation. For fans of the classic four-button chorus, those presets are in there too! Phaser: The phaser section includes an analog OTA- based 12-stage phaser circuit for warm, psychedelic phaser effects, as well as an optical phaser to get a classic Krautrock sound.

Insert / Resonator: The Insert / Resonator section allows you to patch in outboard effects into any part of the effects chain. The resonator component can be used as a subtle EQ to sculpt the tone or can be modulated by the LFO section to create animated resonant or panning effects. The insert returns and sends can occur pre or post-resonator and can also be used as an extra input and output to route multiple signals. When used in parallel, these can turn EXPANDER MK2 into a 4-channel effects processor.

Overdrive: The overdrive section uses Korg’s groundbreaking Nu-Tube micro tube technology to add subtle texture and warmth to any sound, from guitars, synths, drum machines or vocals to anything in between. When pushed further, it can create screaming distortion, perfect for anyone looking to turn up the heat.

LFO: The LFO section features a multitude of LFO’s routable to nearly any destination of the other sections, adding life and movement throughout the signal path.

A convenient selection of connections on the back panel of EXPANDER MK2 includes balanced inputs and outputs, stereo send and return (via individual 1/4′′ jacks or using a common DB25 connector), expression and switch pedals, USB, and DIN MIDI. Additionally, the front includes a convenient HI-Z input for guitarists or any instrumentalist with quieter outputs to plug and play right away. EXPANDER MK2’s natural wood sides can be switched out for included rack ears.

EXPANDER MK2 is a vintage effects inspired powerhouse pushing the boundaries of sound in a

robust, studio form factor. Its hands on capabilities and nearly endless routing options make it an outstanding companion to any production or live set up!"

Buchla Model 292 Quad Lo Pass Gates Eurorack Module by Tiptop Audio - Pics & Details

You've likely seen Todd Barton's recent Tiptop Buchla 292t videos. For those curious, the t denotes Tiptop Audio. Buchla clone modules are often referred to their makers by a letter: v for Mark Verbos, r for Roman Filippov of Black Corporation, j for J3RK, and d for Djangosfire. c denoted the original modules, and e new modules, by Don Buchla.

Details on the 292t via Tiptop Audio:

“It will be very interesting to see what can be done when light controls sound”. That probably was Don’s Buchla first thought when he saw the photo resistor. It seems it didn’t take him long to come up with a great idea using that electronic part and in 1970 he had already finished making his first batch of Model 292 Quad Lo Pass Gates. Why Quad? Because one was so awesome so four of them will mega awesomeness and if they can also be used to create quadrature speaker installations then hell yea!

Don really nailed it with the 292 and the way the lo pass gate provides a natural damping envelope to incoming audio is one of the greatest inventions ever made in analog audio.

Fast-forward to the year is 2023, and we are now very excited to recreate the legendary Model 292 again. In 2023 proper Vactrols are very hard to find, so we end up designing the Vactrols ourselves and the 292t uses 8 hand made Vactrols that are tailored specifically for LPG sound.

The first batch of 292t is now shipping to our dealers and pre-orders should open soon. We are very happy about it and as always are looking forward to see what you will do with them.

The user manual is already on the website so you can check it for more information. Our dear friend Todd Barton, who helped beta test the module, has videos on his You Tube channel worth looking as he explains the 292t in detail.

Vactrols will not stay with us for much longer: they are a very old technology that is getting banned in more and more countries due to the content of cadmium in them. So Don’s invention form 1970 needs to be reinvented for this century, and we are already deep into some serious experiments on alternative circuits that will help keep that wonderful sound of the low pass gate alive in the future. We hope to have this version available later this year.

And one last note, this coming May 11-13 Tiptop Audio will exhibit at Superbooth in Berlin. We have some products many of you are waiting for and some things that you never seen before, so stay tuned."

"This is one of my favorite synths of all time and I suspect I will own one again in the future. I have also owned the Deckard's Dream and greatly prefer the Kijimi. It retains all the incredible MPE expression of the DDRM, yet extends the modulation possibilities vastly, has 4-pole filters, and is just generally more exciting if you ask me.

Check out Ricky Tines' video review." [posted here]

Custom Ukraine Edition (1 of 5) Black Corporation ISE-NIN Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer

via Perfect Circuit

"We've partnered with Black Corporation to offer a highly limited-edition ISE-NIN, featuring the colors of the Ukrainian flag with all proceeds from this sale going towards non-military charity efforts in Ukraine. This instrument is just one of five in this color way, and is sure to deliver the beloved sounds of the Roland Jupiter-8.

Not simply a clone or revival of a classic instrument, Black Corporation's ISE-NIN is a desktop-friendly analog synthesizer inspired by the legendary Roland Jupiter-8 that truly aims for the stars. Adorned with sliders and vivid orange labeling straight out of the 1980s, the ISE-NIN is true to the original with eight voices loaded up with truly analog VCOs and liquidy lowpass and highpass filters. But in true Black Corp. fashion, they're not content with conceptualizing a synth in 2021 and leaving its capabilities dampened by technology from over 40 years ago.

Dual oscillators per-voice allow for synthesists to craft the rich textures harkening back to the golden age of analog synthesizers, offering the ability to freely mix and match waveforms (or noise on VCO-2). One or both VCOs can be modulated by the LFO or one of the ADSR envelope generators, affording the implementation of vibrato or other special pitch effects into patches, while VCO-1 provides a VCO-2 cross-modulation option, and VCO-2 can sync to oscillator one. Before heading into the filters, both VCOs are summed in a crossfade level control—this approach allows, for example, one oscillator to provide the harmonic, musical bed for a patch, while the other can be dialed in to a relatively fine amount for additional grit, bite, or special effect.

Some say that the filter is what makes a synthesizer special, and if the sound of the Jupiter-8 is any indication, ISE-NIN is sure to win the hearts of many. A non-resonant highpass filter cleans up the low end frequencies, but the main attraction is certainly the lowpass VCF—selectable 12 or 24dB/Oct slope, resonance all the way up to self-oscillation, key-tracking, velocity and aftertouch control, and more provide the means to sculpt the sonic spectrum with freedom. Dual ADSR envelope generators round out the onboard modulation options, but it's the deeper menu settings and external control capabilities that really open up the ISE-NIN.

Like the other instruments from Black Corporation, ISE-NIN is MPE compatible, meaning that pairing it up with a compatible DAW or a controller like the Linnstrument or QuNexus unlocks the magic of per-note pitch bend and expression, polyphonic aftertouch, and more. But if that weren't enough, ISE-NIN can split or layer two presets at once, and while this reduces polyphony down to four voices per patch, the musical potential vastly outweighs the polyphonic limitations. Pair this with the onboard arpeggiator and extensive microtuning options compatible with ODDSound's MTS-ESP, and this is a synth that pushes analog sounds in territories never before imagined.

If you find yourself enchanted by the sounds of classic analog instruments but will only settle for the flexibility of a modern synthesizer, ISE-NIN just might be the thriller of a synth needed for your studio."

"Running Fire" on the ISE-NIN

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"A tune from the 'Disgaea' OST on Black Corporation's ISE-NIN

This is a fun one to play. It's layered with other sounds from the ISE-NIN (besides the drums). The ISE-NIN isn't a mono synth but the unison mode really thickens up the sound for leads. This patch utilizes polyphonic aftertouch for vibrato."

Sound Design on the Deckard's Dream Is Too Easy // Patch From Scratch with Free samples

video upload by Ricky Tinez

"Today we explore sound design on one of my all time favorite synthesizers, the Deckard's Dream by Black Corporation. One patch I made prior to hitting record but we'll design two synth patches from scratch together. We'll explore some beginner synth techniques like applying filter envelopes, adding different attack times to layers to have the patch move and sound different over time, as well as running going a little deeper and playing with different tunings and layering the synth with itself in the way it was built. I'll also run the synthesizer through the R1 Reverb Pedal by Walrus Audio to push it over the top and create that cinematic movie score feel. I can't help it..

Ambient sounds of outer space | Neutral Labs Pip & Nijel, Blue Marvin, Deckard's Voice | (20 min)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
I made a 20-minute soundscape video that sounds like the 70s and 80s depiction of music from outer space. Everything is coming out of the Blue Marvin's stereo output, as I don't have any VCAs. Here is the list of modules I used and how they play into the function of the piece:
- Neutral Labs Pip (Clock and CV output)
- Instruō Harmonàig (Quantizer (random melody generator in A Phrygian))
- Instruō/Divkid øchd (overall modulation to a bunch of parameters around the patch)
- Black Corporation Deckard's Voice (Main oscillator on the eurorack side)
- Serge by Random*Source Variable Q VCF (Filter to which Deckard'd Voice is connected (VC F and VC Q parameters modulated by øchd))
- Neutral Labs Nijel (Drive effect for Oscillator 3 in Blue Marvin 2600's Sine Wave, the amount is modulated by øchd's slowest LFO)
- Behringer Blue Marvin 2600 ( 1st and third oscillators, various modulations and internal spring reverb)

In Ableton, I have Valhalla Shimmer on, Other Desert Cities by Audio Damage, and some light EQ and compression.

Black Corporation ISE-NIN: Stereo Patches 2

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"Second installment of some original binaural/stereo patches for LR listening. Each layer is panned 40%. Some reverb added but this has not been EQ'd.

I've had the synth for a few weeks and am starting to get familiar with it. The ISE-NIN is eminently programmable and easy to go get great sounds out of! It can achieve some pleasant stereo effects and I hope this is reflected in the video. The approach here was to start with the same patch in each layer and add variations between the two (eg fine tuning, pulse width, LFO mod, etc). The twin LFO's retrigger on a key press and I think a free-running LFO would do more favors for binaural patches so I'm hoping for this option in an update. I've made 50 stereo patches so far and it'll be easy to fill up the whole bank!"

Black Corporation ISE-NIN: True Stereo Patches

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"Here are some original patches that use dual mode to create a stereophonic sound. This is essentially two different patches panned 30-40% left/right. Dual mode gives 4 voices of polyphony. There is some reverb added but I tried to keep it tasteful.

I've had the synth for about 10 days and am having a blast with it. I've found it straightforward to program and very much an instant gratification synth; however the velocity/pressure routing adds a great depth and making patches for left/right stereo sound is a little more challenging. I like how these turned out but I think with time I'll be able to make more sophisticated patches."

Black Corporation ISE-NIN: Benedek Bank (No talk, no reverb!)

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"Nine selections from the Benedek bank of Black Corporation's ISE-NIN. No reverb, compression, EQ, or other processing was added. This video has some improvements in both sound and video over my earlier ISE-NIN demo. These are mono patches mostly in 'whole' mode, but stay tuned for an upcoming video on stereo patches in 'dual' mode!

Features text narration by my friend Pascal the Possum"

Black Corporation ISE-NIN: Just the Presets (No Talk, No Reverb!)

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"ISE-NIN with no reverb, compression, EQ, or any other processing. Just the volume was raised.

This video was recorded during my first couple days with the ISE-NIN, which is the best sounding polysynth I've ever owned. I started with the presets and I'm partial to the 'vintage' bank. I did this video in a hurry so I apologize for it being unpolished- I was just so excited to get some sounds of the ISE-NIN online because there's not enough demos of it.

The synth is not without faults (mostly little bugs that could maybe be fixed in a firmware update) but I'm glad I bought it. It's an outstanding instrument of the highest caliber. I'm hoping its quality shines through my amateurish video."
