2. Ep 2: How to Sequence Synths with Novation Circuit & JAM

We go over how my gear is setup: Novation Circuit sequences a Roland System 8 and a Moog Sub 37.
We add a final sequence on the onboard System 8 sequencer and then record a final jam.

3. Song #3, "Talking" novation circuit, sub 37, system 8

In our third practice song we swap our analog delay for an MXR Bass Overdrive pedal, taking the output from the Sub 37. Circuit sequences Sub 37 and one of the two Roland System 8 patches. System 8 is in split "performance" mode, using onboard sequencer for upper half.

Doing something a little different this time. I have packed ALL 64 of my original Sub 37 patches into a 4-track MEGA DEMO, a cornucopia of basses, leads, arpeggios, and otherworldly sound effects. Everything you hear is ALL SUB 37, I wanted something true to the tone of just the Sub 37 and nothing else. You may see other effects and things in the background, but NONE are used here.

It took two weeks to compose, film, and edit the video.

The patches are free to download on my blog as a system exclusive file, AKA sysex. If you do, be sure to FIRST backup your own sounds to a computer, and confirm they are saved. If you need guidance be sure to check out my video at https://youtu.be/ulNTvar2fCQ for uploading sysex patches to a synthesizer using a MIDI utility program like MidiOX."

SH-101 - Dominion 1 - Sub37 Snappy Envelopes

"The purpose of this recording was to compare the envelope snappiness of Roland SH-101, MFB Dominion 1 and Moog Sub 37. In addition, I tweaked the osc waveforms, noise and filters too. SH-101 comes first, then the Dominion 1, and last the Sub 37. No fx was used in most of the recording, only small amount of limiting."

"Primeira synth jam combinando o bom e velho (nem tão velho assim) Moog Sub 37 e o recém chegado (nem tão recente assim) Behringer Deepmind 12!

Duas curiosidades técnicas sobre essa jam:

1- O lead do sub 37 foi programado para soar como um Minimoog do Rick Wakeman na década de 70. Como o Sub 37 não consegue soar tão brilhante naturalmente, o recurso foi utilizar um slope do filtro bem menos agressivo que os 24db/octave.

2- Esse timbre de synth polifônico do Deepmind 12 é muito simples de criar. Ataque rápido e pequena modulação de pitch através do LFO. Cada voz do deepmind pode ocupar um posicionamento no pan.

"Obviously I've had years and years of experience using the Moog Sub 37, it truly changed everything for me as far as live performance goes. I was so thankful when it was released, and now all these years later, yes, I personally think it's the best Analog synthesizer of all time. Sure I haven't used them all, but no one has...so if you disagree, duh, it's expected hahaha. That said, The Sub 37 is great for many many reasons, and even though it's been out for 8 years it will is a modern classic...IMHO. So maybe this video was simply made to say I LOVE YOU SUB 37."

Pro 2 + Patterning + Sub 37 + H9 :: Scenes From A Sequence

A Dave Smith Instruments (Sequential Circuits) Pro 2, Olympia Noise Company Patterning app, a Moog Sub 37 and an Eventide H9 make a great, relatively compact performance setup. This is just a small example of some of the places you can go with it.

The Pro 2 is the heart of the system. 41 modulation slots (busses), a 16 track sequencer and massive CV capabilities give it the power to extensively control itself, and other gear.

Everything is clock-synced. The Sub 37’s filter is modulated by a CV step sequence from the Pro 2. This is synced to, but independent of the track that sequences the Pro 2’s internal sound engine.

The Eventide H9 is clocked the same, and does some nice magic when it picks up sharp filter events from the Sub 37 audio.

"A little addition to my Bass Station 2 vs Sub 37 video, essentially revisiting some of the content I deleted in the final edit, because I ended up demoing the new functions of the BSII, taking the focus from the comparison. It did, however, leave the BSII a little unloved in the end as pointed out by Dark Sky Synth :)

"Another quick Moog Sub 37/Eventide H9/DSI Pro 2 combo, this time with the Borderlands app in the background. Also this time, sending a MIDI clock synced S&H LFO from the Pro 2 to modulate the Sub 37 filter cutoff. Kind of subtle, but it adds a nice extra bit of rhythm to what is otherwise a pretty floaty piece. The multi-tap delay on the H9 is also synced to the same clock. Moog Sub37/Subsequent 37: Duo Presets: Pads, Drones, Chords

"'Dark Duos' is a collection of 64 Patches for Moog Subsequent 37 and Sub 37. The bank of presets is dedicated to dark, noisy, lo-fi, vintage/retro pads, drones, and textures. All presets are in DUO mode, providing an opportunity to create the illusion of a chord.

The bank comprises 44 pads/drones and 20 rhythmical pads. The rhythmical pads introduce groove with LFOs that are synchronized to the tempo.

The soundset is suitable for many genres of electronic music: Techno, Industrial, House, Acid, Hardcore, IDM, Drum'n'Bass, Breaks, Breakbeat, Electro, Ambient (including Dark, Noise, Drone), Dubstep, EDM, and others.

ModWheel is set in all patches, it adds movement or changes the tone.
Velocity controls volume and brightness.

Patches' volume levels are set close to each other, you won't get sudden volume spikes or drops while switching the timbres.

The presets should be uploaded via official Moog Editor/Librarian. You should put the folder with the presets to:
Mac - /Users/your username/Library/Application Support/Moog Music Inc.
Windows - C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Moog Music Inc\Sub 37\Presets Library\Moog Music

Make sure you are using the latest firmware version.

"Another quick test of the Moog Sub 37... nine tracks recorded live into Ableton Live.

All sounds including the beat are from the Moog Sub 37 only (with a touch of delay from the Strymon El Capistan on two of the synth parts.) I tried to show a wide variety of sounds, from classic soft leads to crunchy distorted bass, as well as some filter and modulation tweaks.

And this time, instead of recording me actually playing each part (which is a pain in the butt to do) I thought I'd spare you all from having to look at my ugly hairy arms... and show more of the Light Show mode! As always, a good pair of headphones are highly recommended."
