New Avalon Bassline Synth & Sequencer From Abstrakt Instruments - Details & Price

Abstrakt Instruments is a new company from the creators of the x0xi0, a heavily modified x0xb0x that is considered to be the ultimate x0xb0x.  The Avalon is a new instrument and is not based on the x0xb0x. Full details will follow in time, but for now you can get a good feel for what it is via the pics. Click on each for the full size shots. Note there is a white, silver and black version.  Also note the cartridge slot and swappable 24db Transistor Ladder Filter and 12db State Variable Filter cards. There's Dinsync IO in addition to MIDI IO, and extensive CV IO.

You can find an interview with Abstrakt Instruments' Brian Castro previously posted here.

Update: some initial info from Brian (press release is still to follow):

"ok guys, we just got done at NAMM. If we don't sleep for 3 days straight the official press release will go out Monday for those of you who weren't able to attend NAMM and get a demo in person. There will be more content coming as everyone starts to upload more pics and edit videos. For those who can't wait for the NAMM content and debut of the website here are some bullet points of the basics.

The avalon bassline synth is an analog monosynth based on the TB-303. It combines a 100% mirror of TB-303 RevD mainboard together with a panel board containing additional analog and digital circuitry.

Uses all original spec parts of the original TB-303 (transistors, caps, IC's, diodes, transformer, etc..) together with a BA6110 VCA with current gain calibrated to match the original BA662.

Fully backwards compatible with the original TB-303 (actually works with an original TB-303 CPU).

Sub oscillator has saw, sqr, and tri both -1 and -2 oct.

The cartridge slot is for filter carts which can be hot-swapped and used in place of the internal TB-303 filter.

Additional analog controls include sub/ext level control, filter tracking, accent decay, vca decay (goes full off), AD utility envelope with bi-polar modulation of the VCA and VCF.

I/O on back includes CV & Gate In/Out, accent sweep cv out (amplified and normalized to 0-5V), filter cv input. Audio out consists of saw and sqr out (+/-5V), external input, and vca & filter outputs.

Sequencer control has TB-303 pitch/time modes as well as a new realtime mode making use of the the step led switches (yes those are switches). Too many features to list - browse the panel to get an idea. patterns can be 64 steps in length with numerous time signature options. There are 448 internal patterns and 56 tracks. These can also be saved and loaded via sysex.

Sync modes are internal, MIDI and DIN, and it outputs both MIDI and DIN Sync. Also has USB-MIDI, and synth can be played externally.

Extremely high build quality including custom pots, german key switches, and 4-piece steel enclosure.

Can't comment yet on price except to say it'll be under $1000US."

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

Click the pics for the super size shots. According to Lorne Hammond at the MMTA Summer SYNTHFEST, this is the x0xi0 to have.

"If not familiar with the x0xi0 or x0xb0x in general check out the x0xi0 website This x0xi0 is one of the reference units of this design of the x0xi0 kits. This unit was built using the custom x0xb0x and x0xi0 PCB assemblies and is equivalent to the x0xi0 Complete kit shown on the website. The unit is updated to the latest specifications. In addition to the normally specified parts this unit also uses the same Sanyo green polyester caps and Chemi-con SM-series electrolytic caps as the original TB-303. This unit is one of the standard reference units that was used for comparison for the testing of other kits. It was also used for the majority of the 2010 sound demos on the x0xi0 website. The functional and cosmetic condition is exactly as new. The item will come with the appropriate power supply for the location of the winning bidder."

A Note From x0xi0

x0xi0 sells mod kits for x0xb0x. The following is a note from creator Brian Castro. Apparently there are knock offs of the x0xi0 box out there and Brian has been receiving support requests for them. Moving forward x0xi0 will only be offering support for kits purchased directly from their site.

via Brian of x0xi0
(thread on adafruit):

"I have been receiving requests for service on numerous of these synths that aren't mine. As I've mentioned, I have no problem with someone integrating my original published circuit designs into their product, but it should be clearly noted that these are not x0xi0's. It took me several years design and refine this product, and several years to build the brand reputation. I design pro audio electronics as a sole source of income. I have retail products coming in 2012 that are based on my x0xi0 designs.

The reputation of my companies is already taking a hit from these products that are not mine. I take pride in the quality of my kits and retail product and I am proud that they are designed and built in the USA using local vendors and only the best quality parts.

More so, I have been holding back the release of new product simply out of respect of those who are waiting for completed documentation for the x0xi0 custom build kits, and here we have someone trying to copy the design for which there isn't even a completed owners manual... then they get sent to me for support."

Unique Modded x0xb0x based on x0xi0 Mods

via Philippe on the AH list. Note this one is for sale. This is based on the x0xi0 mods, but uses a new PCB. Think heavily xoxio modded x0xb0x modded even further. via Philippe: "It is just a x0xi0 only mounted on a single board, and therefore with a slightly different front panel. But still an exact x0xi0 only wih the few additions and substractions.

"A short introduction to the x0xi0 could be as follows :
It's a x0xb0x with close to 100 (!) additional features, the main ones being :
2 oscillators (instead of 1), 1 noise source, 1 additional envelope, Xmod between oscillators, VCO FM, distortion output, overdrive, etc, etc... the full x0xi0 additional features are described here.

Yet mine is probably the most advanced x0xb0x on the market as in addition to the long list of new features a x0xi0 has, this one has the following extra features:
Li-ion accu charge (you can play the x0xi0 without power supply for about 2 hours)
Overdrive input
Overdrive output
Delay input
Delay output
Filter hi-range switch
Delay time
Delay amount
VCO2 CV In
Slide Out

to make room for these some of the original features which seemed less important had to be taken away:
Gate On LED
Accent Decay LED
Env Decay LED
Hi Resonance LED
Cutoff Hi Range LED
Overdrive Low Freq Switch
Overdrive Type Switch

Sold with a USB cable and its 220volts power supply.

Located in France.
Looking for convincing offers since it is hard to define a price for this extremely rare synth.

Email me off list for pictures and additional infos...

Thanks for reading,
Philippe"

"Famous Tinky-Winky-Acid-Patterns in beaver style part2 - unmasteredovermixed (TM)

Guess the famous pattern which was used on the x0xi0 - you should be able to guess it around 04:30

This is 11m one single pattern, so consider it as boring and just a demonstration of the incredible capabilities of the x0xi0-mod sounds, especially the overdrive mod. I do especially like how it's crying at 10:00 ++

I did this at the end of last year but was never really happy with it. On one hand I had a take2 on my todo-list for 16 weeks now and its time to scratch stuff - on the other hand I felt like I should upload something new here - so here we go with take1. If it hurts and your ears start bleeding because you're missing things like a compressor - just watch other glossy stuff from glossy people. Otherwise turn the volume up and undergo the sweetness of clipping!

Thanks for watching!"

2010-02-28 Minimal Acid Jam (Dual-Vco-x0xb0x, DSI Evolver, Jomox 888)

YouTube via KeepUpOnIt | September 09, 2010

"This is a very minimalistic test of the x0xb0x VCO2 mod I installed in February.
Up to 02:15 VCO1 only, afterwards VCO+VCO2, at 03:55 some VCO2 detuning.

If you like it or have questions, leave a comment or write a message to make me happy, if you don't like it - make sure to check out Zx7XcExWFno and help to protect the forest to make the beavers happy."

2010-08-14 Voltage Magic (x0xi0-x0xb0x VCO1+2 X-MOD Testing)

KeepUpOnIt | September 09, 2010

"Another very minimalistic video, just demonstrating the VCO1+VCO2 crossmodulation sound of the x0xi0 x0xb0x mod. Its so warm, I really like it. This is not a sequence, as you can see - the "gate on" switch on the left side is on and so gate is never released, which does cause this permanent sound. Some Jomox 888 sounds by gestures (not working correctly yet)

- Up to 00:30 VCO2 only, no xmod
- 00:30 VCO2 only, modulated by VCO1 a bit
- 00:56 VCO2 only, modulated by VCO1 a bit more
- 02:16 VCO2 only, modulated by VCO1 even a bit more
- 02:24 tuning VCO1 down and turning cross modulation off again
- 02:43 tuning VCO2 up
- 03:41 reversing x-mod from initial "VCO1 modulates VCO2" to "VCO2 modulates VCO1"
- 03:44 turning VCO2 volume up, you hear VCO1 + VCO2 parallel, no X-MOD
- 03:56 VCO1+VCO2 parallel, turning up VCO2 modulates VCO1 X-MOD

Listen loud, don't forget to turn bass up. If you don't like it, its not my fault, its the fault of a Beaver! If you like it or have questions - leave a comment or write a message. Bless the Voltage!"

x0xi0 modded x0xb0x - first test (no line, just phone audio)

YouTube via KeepUpOnIt | July 04, 2010

"I just got my long awaited x0xi0 full modded x0xb0x (no, I didn't built it myself, thank you Brian Castro, fantastic Job!)

This is the first test and I was not very patient so I did not hook it up to an audio port of my soundcard but just attached the monitors directly and run the xBase09 though audio in of the x0xb0x. It was such a nice first-try-extreme-fun-session with this bassmonster that I had to record it quick and dirty (TM). Don't expect line sound, its just recorded with my phone!

As usual - if you don't like it, please tell your mom and watch other stuff, otherwise leave a comment!"

x0xi0 vs TB-303 (x0xb0x)

YouTube via bcastromusic | June 28, 2010 | 7:50

"A/B comparison of x0xi0 versus Roland TB-303.
2nd half of video shows x0xi0 diverging from standard 303 sound.
sorry, no HD, sound quality is bad for a comparison.
Go here for hires audio version: http://alphazone1.com/x0xi0/web_downl...

All sounds are realtime from the x0xi0 (and the TB-303), no external effects or processing.
