Euclids Wheel by Benge

video upload by Memetune Studio

"Benge Buchlaisms - 'Euclid’s Wheel'

https://modulisme.bandcamp.com
https://zackdagoba.bandcamp.com

Euclid pointed out 2300 years ago, a wheel is not round when viewed from an angle

This piece started life as an exploration of the Buchla MARF’s ability to play two concurrent sequences of different lengths. I set up two Euclidean Rhythmic patterns (E-7/12 and E-3/8) and then added further modulations using the Buchla 208 5-step sequencer. The overall effect is one of polyrhythmic complexity, aided by this instrument's plethora of interconnectable options, including panning, random voltages, frequency modulation and shifting, phasing, envelope following, and filtering

It would be impossible to list all the pathways that were involved in this patch, but the general idea is one of Euclidean Rhythms, and the perception of cycles, circles, ovals and wheels within wheels

Note that this patch makes use of the special yellow banana cable that Don himself gifted me when I was in his workshop many years ago. I treasure the yellow cable, I believe it holds some magic for me when patching his amazing system"

BENGE - FORMS16 Watercolour on Paper

video upload by Memetune Studio

"Music from the Serge Modular Paperface

This is an album exploring the interplay between random events and deliberate human intervention, something which, in the electronic music field, I call cybersynthesis. I saw it’s creation as being analogous to creating pictures using the medium of Watercolour, whereby the various pigments are allowed to flow randomly in water with the hand of the painter guiding the proceedings with an eye on satisfying various criteria. These criteria define the artist's intention. The work is the result

The music was made on the Serge Modular Paperface system, with most of the modules being made in the early-to-mid 1970s. However, one panel of the nine used is a modern unit formatted to the Serge standard, made by the British synthesiser manufacturer Loudest Warning. This panel was assembled on my instruction, a service happily provided by the manufacturer, and contains cybernetic functions that I felt were lacking in the other modules in my system, but which fit in with the spirit of the Serge. They were designed to aid in the composition of self-generating melodic and rhythmic patterns as found on this album

Note that the original paintings featured in this video are available to buy via Benge's Bandcamp page: https://zackdagoba.bandcamp.com/album..."

Autumnism - Benge on the Buchla 100

video upload by Memetune Studio

"Benge Buchlaisms - 'Autumnism'

https://modulisme.bandcamp.com
https://zackdagoba.bandcamp.com

This is a multi-tracked piece made exclusively on the Buchla 100 synthesiser

The modules in the left-hand cabinets are all original vintage units made in the 1960s (apart from the middle 144 VCO which is my own clone made before the current slew of clones released since 2018)

The patch makes use of many oscillators going into the 191 Sharp Cutoff Filter, in bandpass mode, as well as other layers using the Frequency Shifter and Noise Sources

The Random module is a big part of the patches, as well as the Sequencers

But perhaps the most important modules in any patch on the 100 are the 156 CV Processors. This is because of the way Don designed the system, leaving off the CV processing from most modules. So for example, most functions on the modules have voltage control inputs, but no scaling knobs or mixers on them, so the 156 modules are used for this task

In general, I approached the patching for this piece in a fairly ad-hock manner, and just enjoyed patching and playing with the system as I went along, with no particular goal other than exploring the Buchla's warm sonic possibilities, on a very cold, wet, autumnal day"

Benge - Forms 15 "Dawn" made on the DK Synergy

video upload by zack dagoba

"New album by Benge - part 15 of his FORMS Series - albums made on one synthesis system. Here is an ambient album made entirely on a Digital Keyboards Synergy II+ and Lexicon Model 200 / Primetime early digital FX

https://zackdagoba.bandcamp.com/album...

'The pure digital sounds of the D K Synergy, and the two very special effects units from the same year (1984), feature the same no-compromise approach to digital sound production, which in the early 80s was a very new territory for manufacturers and musicians to explore. To my ears, these abecedarian digital devices have a purity and warmth that is particularly suited to simple ambient pieces of music such as those presented on 'Dawn'. In some ways, it was the dawning of a new era for electronic music in general, and one which I happily reexplore on this album'"

Introducing The Memetune Annual 2023 - Book & Music by Benge

video upload by zack dagoba

Benge previously brought us 13 Systems, and 20 Systems, praised by Brian Eno back in 2008. You can find them and more on BandCamp.

"The Memetune Programme Annual 2023 takes the form of an A4 hardback book and double CD album, which compliments and celebrates the first six episodes of Benge’s debut television series, made at his Memetune Electronic Music Studio in 2022

To quote Benge from the introduction to the Annual: 'It was always such a thrill, during my teenage years, to discover a new annual compendium from one of my favourite bands, comics or in particular one belonging to a favourite TV series, such as Blake’s 7 or Space 1999

The photos and information contained in those pages always left me wanting to watch the next series ever more eagerly

And so it is an even greater thrill for me to be able to be presenting my very own annual compendium, derived from the content of my recent TV series

I do hope that this book will inspire similar feelings in you, and moreover, whet your appetite for the next series of The Memetune Programme'

The book is divided into the following sections:

SWITCHED ON - Featuring in-depth discussions about the history and development of the synthesiser over the years, including pictures, diagrams and feature guides of many classic and iconic instruments

SYNTHESISER CLUB - A very vintage look at a synthesiser classic or three

PATCHING TODAY - A deep dive into vintage modular systems and how to set up a patch on them, starting from scratch

VIDEO LAB - A look at old video equipment and how to create experimental visuals using it

The two CDs included inside the book feature all the music from the series, written and performed by Benge to complement the programmes. CD1 contains 33 synthesiser demos which map out the history of synthesisers through the years. CD2 has all the theme tunes, idents and incidental music Benge made for the series

The book will be released on February 3rd 2023 via Bandcamp. Follow the link to Benge’s merch page here: zackdagoba.bandcamp.com/merch

The digital version of the album can be pre-ordered here: zackdagoba.bandcamp.com/album/the-memetune-programme-album"

"The first half of this album (tracks 1 to 33) is made up of the demonstration tracks made by Benge for his TV series 'The Memetune Programme'. The tracks were performed live on each instrument and filmed for the television programmes

The second half (tracks 34 to 55) contains the theme tunes, idents and incidental music from the TV series

To watch the full episodes, please search on YouTube for "the memetune programme by benge" [or scroll down posts here on MATRIXSYNTH]

Please take a look at the Memetune Annual 2023 which is a limited edition A4 hardback book based on the TV series. The book includes two CDs inside, with the music from this release on them. It will be available to buy from the merch section here on the 3rd February 2023"
