Exomène & Percussa Audio Cubes

via Percussa

"How Exomène is using AudioCubes in his Performances and Studio

Exomène, a soundsmith and digital apothecary as he describes himself on his website, is been using the AudioCubes for a couple of years now. He’s using the AudioCubes in all his live performances as well as in his studio:

'I've been using Audiocubes in all my shows since I bought them but they proved to be very useful in the studio too where I only use them in sender/receiver mode. This configuration allows me to quickly test different melodies with the arpegiator or easily maintain one note leaving my hands free to make the sound evolve by modifying the parameters of the synth and effects. Actually, my first album 'The life and death of an unnoticed shadow' was recorded with Audiocubes as my main instrument.'

Exomène recently shared with us a cool video in which he is using the AudioCubes together with some of his other gear to perform live. Click on the image below to check out Exomène's video KinderGarten. [embed below]

In his current setup, he is using 3 AudioCubes with Propellerhead's Reason:

'I use 3 cubes with Propellerhead's Reason, 2 in sender/receiver mode to trigger an arpegiator which usually runs the main layer of my soundscape. The 3rd cube is in sensor mode. Depending on the track, it runs the arpegiator parameters and/or the main synth parameters and/or several other effects, usually a distortion, an equalizer, a phaser and a flanger. You can see them (the blue and pink lights at the right of the screen) in my live capture of "side by side'. [embed further below]

About Exomène

I am Exomène : a soundsmith and a digital apothecary. As a musician, I make cinematic soundscapes on albums and industrial music live. Speaking about live, I am into audiovisual performances like Side by Side, Digital Primitive or the Spoken Worms. As a digital artist, I am interested in the similarities between brain and processors with the synæsizer. I am also interested in vintage software æesthetic, glitch and databending.

"Here is a video demo to appreciate Exomène (www.exomene.com) performing live.
And what a better playground for industrial music than playing in a factory!

Exomène's approach is very physical and far away from music studio.
Exomène always engages and interacts with its audience especially through the use of colorful and interactive performances controllers.
Then the crowd in itself is also a performance controller : the movements, the color of the clothes... everything is used to interact with sounds thanks to video capture.

This approach have its real significance when Exomène's performs in A/V projects such as "X-Peri-Mental".

X-Peri-Mental is a performance realised by the collective of artists 'le:d'
l:ed (l : Experiments in Digital) is a group of artists currently composed by the image slayer Dorianne Wotton and the soundsmith Exomène.
Collaborating since 2004 around the concept of 'æsthetic of desolation' their work extends to the areas of photo, music, video, digital arts and multimedia performances.
Their more recent works are 'The spoken worms' (audiovisual performance), 'Synæsizer' (digital art installation), "Glitch-O-matic" (digital art installation) and X-Peri-Mental (audiovisual live act).
X-Peri-Mental is meant to be a live act, so l:ed always engages and interacts with its audience especially through video capture.
The crowd directly shape our performance because we choose our sounds and images according to its reaction. That is why we face the audience and we use colorful and interactive performances controllers."

"EXOMENE / DORIANNE WOTTON / MARIE BARTHELEMY / ALEXIS OCHIN : 'Side by side'

Stereo ILLUMIRINGER given to Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock - Beastie Boys)

"I just had to do it, how many chances does a man get to see Cheech & Chong "Up in Smoke" with Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys? The answer.... is one chance.

I bought my tickets to the movie, and immediately started thinking of what I might give to the King Ad-Rock if I was able to catch up with him for a few. A ran through a bunch of ideas, none of which seemed right for him. I wanted the piece to really be a custom number, one that not only looked Beastie, but would be useful to one.

Eventually it hit me, how about a Stereo R.C.A. version of the illumiringer effect. This way it could easily be used with turntables or an MPC sampler (two things Adam Horovitz is no stranger to). I like the idea of the effect being stereo, this will allow Adam to turn on one channel (left or right) of the effect or both. That way the end result of a beat / record would be a combination of both, giving the final sound some really cool texture.

Well, if you watched the video you see.. I was able to catch up with Adam after the movie and hand him off the piece. He was totally stoked, but probably not as much as I was. ha

Sadly the video is only a walk through of the features and graphics, I didn't have enough time to put together a good RCA setup to shoot a good demo. Hopefully we will see or hear some of it somewhere in Adam's future work. Either way, it was amazing to meet him.. what a totally down to earth cool guy. Not that I or anyone else would expect anything less. Adam had mentioned he had even given some circuit bending a shot in the past, and has a pile of baby toys left behind from his son he might want to have me crack open. It would of course be an honor, I look forward to it :) Again, thanks Adam... you rock!

PLEASE do not write me asking me to make an exact clone of this piece. This is a one of a kind made for Adam, I am happy to share it with you... but making loot off the the Beastie's name is not the game here. I just wanted to show some appreciation to an artist I really respect. I will certainly make other stereo Illumiringers, maybe even with R.C.A. inputs... I think it was a cool idea, just not the Beastie Boys one seen here. I am sure you understand :) Thanks all."
