DW-6000, Flashback Triple Delay, Trinity2

Published on Jan 6, 2018 The Outsider

"Often overlooked, if not dismissed outright, the DW-6000 is the underdog from KORG's pair of DWGS synths made in the mid 80s. On paper, the feature list of the 6000 does pale in comparison with that of its big brother the DW-8000, but it is hardly a synth without merit. The filter is very warm, with resonance that can bite, and the chorus (at least on this particular unit) is nice and surprisingly far less noisy than that of Roland's Juno series. It's an interesting synth, capable of standard analog polysynth sounds, but also able to venture into PPG territory thanks to digital waveforms.

This is a live noodling session, no overdubs, no sequencing. I switched patches on the fly, going back and forth between different sounds. I have the first delay's time in the Flashback set close to max, which provided an almost looper-like result, you can hear the sounds layering on each other but surprisingly it never got out of hand. Absolutely amazing what a difference pedals can make, and I still can't get over just how good pedals sound these days.

The Flashback is set to serial mode, with the delays as follows: Tape - Space - Reverse. The Trinity2 is set as follows: Decay at 3 o'clock, Tone and Mix at 12 o'clock, using the IV preset. The signal goes into a Mackie MS 1402-VLZ mixer, then through a Focusrite Compounder. Recorded into a Zoom R8, then slightly tinkered with in Logic Pro X (very slight EQ and level adjustment)."

"A classic synth from the early 80s this Poly-61 was used largely in my home studio and has been in storage for the past 20 years. With two oscillators per voice, and six individual voices, it can produce vibrant, gritty basses or rich, warm analog pads. The sounds are wonderful and evocative of recordings produced in that era. One of the best features is the joy-stick that controls Pitch Bend, DCO, and VCF in real time. It makes for some very expressive and interesting effects. The Arpeggiator and Key Assign Mode features add to the wide array of effects that are possible."
