Hello Deluge: first impressions with the Synthstrom Deluge

Published on Jun 27, 2018 Olivier Ozoux

"There's a new all-in-one sequencer/synthesizer/sampler on the grass, and it's the Synthstrom Audible Deluge.

I've had the Elektron Digitakt in my setup for almost a year, but while I love the sound engine and used it as the main drum machine, I couldn't really get along with it as "the one box" I could take with me somewhere and work on music. the lack of a internal polyphonic sequencer and the limited number of voices made it really hard for me to use it by itself, and I'll admit that the Squarp Pyramid spoiled me as a full featured hardware sequencer.

Enter the Deluge. I love how the sequencer felt confortable right away, the sampling features are fantastic, and the built in synth engines seems flexible enough to be used as that magical "one box" while I'm out and about, and still be used as the Digitakt replacement in the studio."

Systematic Vol 1 - Patches 45 to 64 - System 8 Engine by GEOSynths

Published on Jun 27, 2018 GEOSynths

"So, here's the final video for the 64 Patches i've made for the Roland System 8 Engine. It's actually a very capable Synth with lots of tonal variety...I particularly like the Ring Modulator and Cross Mod, some weird and wonderful textures, both subtle and err...not so subtle."

Mixing and Matching Synth Videos

Byron from zero11zero wrote in to let me know he was watching the AX80 video below when he decided to launch the S-CAT video below it, both posted earlier on the same page here. They went well together. He then started a third NuEVI video (also below) and it all came together. He said it reminded him of something that might have been on The Orb's first album. He asked me if I posted them up in order on purpose. Unfortunately I can't claim such brilliance, but I have definitely experienced it in the past while parsing and posting videos. I'll play something and accidentally start something else, thinking, wow this amazingly complex for what I'm seeing, only to realize that another video is playing along with it. Anyway, I thought I'd share this one with you all.  Start the first video, wait for it to pick up in volume and then launch the second, followed by the third shortly after.  You might need to pause and start the individual videos to get the timing to work, but it should come together. You can even adjust the "mix levels" with the speaker controls on the bottom left of the players. It's pretty damn cool.

Synthstrom Audible Deluge firmware V2.0.0 Now Available

via Synthstrom Audible

"We're enormously proud to announce the release of our new Deluge V2.0.0 firmware. [see here]

Download it here.

Huge new features:

-- Song arranger mode
-- 30 - 50% or more improvement to CPU efficiency (i.e. more voices)
-- Around 30x more RAM available for working on a song
-- New analog-modelling synth engine features
-- Effect tails may now be heard even after a track finishes playing (including outside of the new arranger mode)
-- MIDI CC, pitch bend, and channel aftertouch recording, sequencing and output
-- MIDI note outputs within kits
-- Note velocity now defaults to that of last touched note (per track)
-- Innumerable other bugfixes and improvements

Read all about the new features in our updated manual.

Ron Cavagnaro has made a great introductory video on the new arranger mode.

To accompany this release, we've expanded the supplied collection of synth presets to 168 total, including many user submissions. This will be supplied on the SD cards of all Deluges shipping from today. For those with a Deluge already, you can download it:
-- Entire factory SD card contents (182MB)
-- Synth presets only (216KB - this is all that's actually changed - place these in your SYNTHS folder)
This collection replaces the 92 synth presets which have been supplied with all Deluges up until now, and still contains almost all of the same sounds or improved versions of them. See the manual for the list of preset titles and creators. Replacing the synth presets in your SYNTHS folder will have no effect on the sound of your previously saved songs.

PLEASE NOTE: any songs saved with this firmware will be unreadable by older firmware versions.

Another note - due to the huge changes to the synth engine, there is regrettably a chance that some of your existing songs may sound a little different with the new firmware. We've done our very best to minimize this, but the following cases may need slight tweaks to the parameters to sound exactly the same as before:
-- Sounds with the filter resonance on full
-- Sounds featuring both an LPF and an HPF

To install the update, place the .bin file onto your SD card, ensure there are no other .bin files on there, put the card back into your Deluge, and then hold down the shift button while powering on. A spinning animation will display, and the firmware will be permanently installed."
