Driftmachine - Against The Clock

Published on Aug 22, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Modular synths aren't as rare and unusual as they once were, but few artists can claim to have mastered them like Andreas Gerth and Florian Zimmer. As Driftmachine, the pair use two systems running in sync to create multilayered compositions that straddle the line between techno and drone.

The pair have a released several albums on Umor Rex over the past four years, including this year's Shunter, a deep dive into "post-industrial dub" peppered with noise and field recordings. However, as we discovered when we visited their studio for this episode of Against The Clock, they sometimes use puppets to make music too."

Signal Processing with Contour

Published on Aug 22, 2018 MAKEN0ISE

"Did you know that the Gate input on the Contour circuit of the 0-Coast, as well as the same input on the Contour module, will accept any positive voltage, not just gates?

This can be used as a slew limiter for CV, or an audio processor with variable rectification and filtering, and optional pulse-wave outputs."

24-TET Step Sequencing (Demo 1)

Published on Aug 22, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Quick illustration of a 24-tone step sequence I built on the Obi. Tonally I've illustrated this from a single waveform with no effects to show the scale in its 'pure' form. I was going to start slower and gradually increase the metronome speed, but YT has a playback speed function which will suffice for anyone wishing to hear the scale slower.

Very interesting sound @ c. 1:48 when the release is at max. Given the quarter-tone nature of the sequence, with full sustain certain passages sound almost like a chromatic glissando; some kind of alien Geisterschiff.

I will put up full pieces - but I feel familiarising the listener with the sound of 24-tone music through short illustrative videos is likely more accessible an approach than simply uploading full pieces.

Take note that I focused heavily on the root with this sequence i.e. the octaves at the beginning/halfway mark. Doing so gives the sequence the feeling of, in places, retaining a sense of 12-tone. Again, this is to initially avoid creating something so alien it is inaccessible.

With future sequences I'll render the sense of root obsolete i.e. create multiple modal interpretations/interpolations of a scale."

Theremin & Disting triggered E352 & E370 Bongos and Chords

Published on Aug 22, 2018 The Mad Music Machine

"Caitlin uses the Doepfer Theremin (via the Expert Sleepers Disting) to trigger the E352 and E370 to produce 'Bongo' sounds and Chords.

She ends with a little jam on the Roland System-1m.

The Moog Mother-32 & Hexinverter Mutant Drums help with the rhythms.

Bitwig Studio provides the sequencing via the Sixty Four Pixels Banana Split"
