Repairing LEO's ARP 2600's with Don Lewis - Synthchaser #130

Published on Feb 18, 2020 Synth Chaser

"It was a huge honor and incredibly fun to work on the ARP 2600s from Don Lewis' LEO (Live Electronic Orchestra) with him this weekend. LEO was a groundbreaking historic synthesizer that served as an inspiration for MIDI, having vintage synths from many different manufacturers (ARP, Oberheim, Roland, etc) all connected and working together. In this video, Don talks a bit about LEO, we show the problem with one of the oscillators in the ARP 2600, and then we troubleshoot and repair it.

19:11 Final test & parting thoughts

There's a new documentary, The Ballad of Don Lewis, which is available for pre-order on Amazon or On Demand from your cable provider that tells Don's amazing story, which goes much deeper than just LEO. LEO will be on display again the the NAMM Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California starting in 2021.

Roland Jupiter-8 w/ MIDI & OC-8 Option

"It has the OC-8 option from factory. It also comes with the rare original manual in the same great cosmetic shape as the JP8! And as a bonus the sought after original Jupiter8 sales folder.

Technical it needs some love. It starts normal, it tunes all 8 voices, patches loading no problem, sounds really fat and great, but has some sliders/pots that need to be cleaned, the data led doesn't work and some other small issues I noticed so far, seems to work for the greater part but definitely needs to be taken care of technically before you use it; the Jupiter8 it will be sold as is: no warranty of any kind. It's a private sale."

Rare Analogue Systems TH AS 48 Sequencer

"In the early 1990s, analogue sequencers were a bit like policemen and Number 25 buses - you could never find one when you wanted one. Then a whole bunch of them came along together. Doepfer Musikelektronik started the ball rolling in 1993 with the MAQ16/3 (although that was, strictly speaking, only analogue in style) to be followed by Analogue Systems, the company that is the brainchild of vintage synth expert and former collector, Bob Williams. Taking their lead from the TH48, numerous other analogue sequencers were released in the years that followed, so maybe it's time to look again at why this obscure piece of equipment, built using relatively primitive electronics and designed to seemingly obsolete principles, still attracts such devotion. Oh yes... and still attracts such significant wads of money."
