Company Founder Dave Smith to Continue Leading Product Development

San Francisco, CA — June 24, 2021 — Sequential LLC today announced that it has chosen respected audio and music industry veteran David Gibbons to take on the role of CEO and spearhead its business operations. Dave Smith, famed instrument designer and founder of the respected American synthesizer manufacturer, will continue to drive the company’s product vision, development, and engineering efforts.

Gibbons has a distinguished history in the industry and was responsible for Avid/Digidesign’s entry and unprecedented success in the live sound console arena. He started the VENUE live digital mixing console product line and grew it to over $35M in annual revenues. He went on to lead the audio portfolio strategy for the company, and helped it grow to over $300M through a host of powerful and well-integrated music, post, and live sound products. Outside the audio industry, Gibbons has held marketing and product leadership roles at several notable tech companies including streaming media leader Ustream (acquired by IBM), and Salesforce, where he led marketing for their analytics solution.

Sequential’s Dave Smith commented: “I am personally excited to bring David in to run Sequential. Not only is he bringing all of his experience building brands and opening markets, but also his ability to drive innovation while managing the business and operational aspects of a company. My goal has always been to focus my energy on product design and engineering, and now I have David to take us into the future and further develop the Sequential brand and legacy.”

Tim Carroll, CEO of Focusrite Group, added: “I’m thrilled to be working with David again. During our time at Digidesign and Avid, David’s leadership and passion for the industry led to some amazing achievements. Having him at the helm of Sequential’s business operations with Dave Smith leading the charge on product innovation is an unbeatable combination. It’s going to result in even more killer products from the Sequential team.”

Taking the reins as CEO, David Gibbons had this to say: “I’m so excited to join Dave Smith and Sequential. Working with a legend like Dave is on every musician’s wish list. And I’ve always enjoyed working with Tim Carroll. When Tim called to offer me this opportunity, I didn’t think twice: Sequential products have inspired keyboardists for years. And the team they’ve cultivated keeps delivering incredible instrument after instrument. Now, with Tim and the Focusrite Group behind us, there’s so much more we can accomplish. After 40-plus years, Sequential is just getting started!”

Sequential has been a leading force in the resurgent popularity of analog synthesizers over the last decade. Its instruments, which include the Prophet® 5 Rev4 polyphonic synth, Pro 3® hybrid monosynth, and Prophet X Samples + Synthesis keyboard, are known for their versatility, ease of use, and excellence of sound. They are a mainstay of performing and recording artists and can be seen and heard on countless stages and recordings.

Shoegaze Synth + Pedal Sounds with Pascal Stevenson of Moaning

video upload by Perfect Circuit

"Fascinated by the lush, dreamy, and pensive sound of Los Angeles-based alternative outfit Moaning, we've invited their chief of synths, and bassist Pascal Stevenson to our studio to share with our audience some of the techniques they use to achieve the band's signature tone.

Simply combining the outstanding Sequential Prophet 6 synthesizer, and a modest assemblage of effects pedals, Pascal takes us on a journey through variations on classic sounds of shoegaze, dream pop, and post punk. It is quite amazing what can be achieved with just a few simple ingredients, and even if you don't have the exact gear used in the video, you are likely to have some hardware/software alternatives. This is one of those videos where everything we show can be easily and safely tried at home. We promise nothing will blow up, except for your minds!

Moog Equalizer Keytar Controller?

Retro Synth Ads shared this one on Twitter.

"Can someone please explain to me what a @moogmusicinc Equalizer is, where it came from, and why no one has told me this existed. A Liberation without synth guts?"

Anyone seen one before? This appears to be the first one featured on the site.

Update: according to Brian Kehew of roundandwound.com and more, this was the prototype of the Liberation. "The EMEAPP collection in Philadelphia has two of them. Stevie Wonder's old ones."

The Allman Bros had one on the road as well as you can see at 30:39 in the following video (it should start right when in comes in):

Native Instruments and Dinamo drop limited-edition MASCHINE MK3

The press release:

"The collaboration sees Native’s iconic hardware meet the influential Swiss design agency’s fearless approach to design.

June 24, 2021 – Native Instruments and Dinamo today launched MASCHINE Dinamo, a limited-run MASCHINE MK3 as part of a new collaboration between the Berlin-based music company and Basel type foundry.

Limited to 750 pieces worldwide, the release sees the iconic MASCHINE MK3 tricked out in a silver and black screenprint with Dinamo’s Inktrap typeface on every surface – an homage to bold design and chunky aesthetics.

Inktrap fonts originally included notches designed to stop ink bleed in early printing. Dinamo’s rework lends the style contemporary utility by controlling light bleed on MASCHINE’s lazer-etched buttons.

The typeface wraps the edges of the unit in a double nod to 80s and 90s-era throw-up graffiti and marquee news tickers – both ubiquitous to the decades that spawned sample-based music making.

MASCHINE Dinamo is the latest in a series of limited-edition runs that earlier this year saw the KOMPLETE KONTROL M32 overhauled with a molten blue colorway in collaboration with Timbaland’s Beatclub.

The release marks the first time Native has opened the iconic MASCHINE line to a collaboration with a design studio.

MASCHINE Dinamo is out now and is available at the Native Instruments website.
