Fizmo | Ensoniqs last and worst synth?

video upload by Espen Kraft

Thought this was an interesting example of how some people view synths as an instrument to play traditional music to, while others view synths as a sonic palate to explore. The Fismo excels at sonic exploration. It sounds alive at times. The synth is all about evolving textures and timbres. The Buchla Music Easel and Buchla's vision of a synthesiver vs. Moog comes to mind, although Buchla did choose "Music" in that title. Hmm...

The following is what Espen Kraft has to say:

"The Fizmo was the last true synthesizer from Ensoniq. In 1998 this was labeled as a Transwave synthesizer. With multiple arpeggiator patterns and glassy wavetables it sure is an ambient dog.

I must confess that I never took to this synth. Yes, it has a lot of knobs and faders and yes, you can get some decent sounds out of it. I'm usually very positive to wavetable synths, hybrid synths and arpeggio driven bells and whistles, but the OS is very messy, the wavetables themselves are way too glassy and thin and it just doesn't speak to me.

The demo track uses external drums and some external effects as well. All the sounds are indeed from the Fizmo and everything has been multi tracked, mixed and mastered."

Yamaha DX7 + TX802 + TX81Z (combo)

video upload by Sebastian Galassi

"Who says digital synths have no soul? I think that when it comes to those glossy and lush 80s-flavored songs, there is nothing better than them. And if the chosen synths are the Yamaha DX7 and close relatives then we have everything we need. Here is a small example using 3 members of the Yamaha family: DX7, TX 802 and TX81Z and the rhythm part comes from an Akai S900.

DX7 - Polysynth, DX Synth Bell, Swell Pad
TX 802 - Bass+EP Piano (Split) , Lead synth
TX 81Z - Mute Guitar

Drums - Akai S900

Reverb - Lexicon LXP15, TC Electronic M One
Delay - Digitech Studio 400
Chorus - Arion SCH-1 Stereo Chorus"

Retro Mechanical Labs: Beauty Through Pain

video upload by Richard DeHove

"This is a bit rough and I clearly don't know the controls too well. But I'm sure you know the excitement of getting a new bit of gear and hearing things fall out of it even though you're just fumbling about? It seemed a shame to let that pass by, so here it is: early days with the 'Retro Mechanical Labs Hyde Distortion Filter and Electron Fuzz Custom CV Combo' - and yes, that's its actual name. The DB-01 output is split with one side going into the filter and the other into the fuzz. Left and right then go into separate sides of the Boss RV-6 reverb pedal. There's some limiting to avoid bad surprises but otherwise the audio is raw. That means there's some clicks, pops, squeals and grinding. I hope you find as much beauty in this raw mess of pain as I did.

Jordan Rudess plays the Syner-V modern virtual synthesizer from Syntronik 2

video upload by

"Watch Jordan Rudess plays one of the classic synths of Syntronik 2 - the Syner-V. The Syner-V is based on the Digital Keyboards Synergy ii+ with its wide range of unique soundscapes and glassy, metallic tones. Although it did not officially use the term 'FM' due to Yamaha’s trademark, the Synergy did employ the same basic technology of the GS and DX series as well as the Synclavier FM synthesis."

Jordan Rudess plays the OSC-V modern virtual synthesizer from Syntronik 2

"Watch Jordan Rudess plays one of the classic synths of Syntronik 2 - the OSC-V. The OSC-V is based on the Classic analog-filtered digital monosynth sounds of the Oxford Synthesiser Company OSCar, a British classic. Sometimes called the 'British Minimoog,' the OSCar can sound deceptively analog and ultra-fat despite its digital oscillators."
