"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. Nothing is sacred . After weeks of brand-new direct-to-Bad Gear game changers even hardened internet trolls like me fancy a little palette cleanser.

Today we are going to talk about the original Roland TR-707. This vintage drum machine and digital sibling to the more iconic TR-808 and TR-909 is mostly perceived in one of two ways: a timeless classic for both realistic drum sounds and futuristic 80s house OR the most boring and obsolete cheesebox since whatever Casio came up with back then.

"A first test flight with the Neutral Labs Elmyra 2. I´m REALLY blown away by the dark, beautifully textured und distorted sound that comes out of this little box. The built-in sequencer is a significant part of its charm and makes the Elmyra an inspiring playground.

It's a blessing to get send a great device and the only payment for it is to make music with it, which is just inspiring and fun.

Elmyra runs through Valhalla Room.

"A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I've had this chord progression kicking around for a little while, the product of a voice-leading exercise I was doing. I was super happy with it but never able to incorporate it into a larger arrangement. Recently, I realized I could just run the chord progression through the Midicake ARP and get some inspiration on the song arrangement, and sure enough, that was all it took (along with a few amazing synthesizers and effects). Really happy with where this one ended up.

Full disclosure: I cut and paste a previous drum fill to the outro drum fill, because I felt the outro drum fill didn't match the quality of the earlier one. Seemed a more judicious approach than recording the whole thing again.

"I've been spending a lot of time with the Ensoniq Mirage and sampling drums (which come out sounding so good) and wondered whether I could beef up the drums within the spectralis itself. I realized that I could send the drums to the analog filters and then do all sorts of things with it.

Note that this doesn't have any melodic stuff in it and it's using a simple drum beat, but I figure that will help you understand what it is that's happening with the sounds. Hope it's of use to any Spectralis user or potential Spectralis users.

This WILL work for both Spectralis 1 and 2 units equally. There will be no difference in sound (unless you haven't yet performed the filter fix on your Spectralis 2, then it will sounds much darker on your unit).
