Uptempo jam with Midicake ARP, Dreadbox Nymphes, Moog Minitaur, Mother 32, MSW-810, DrumBrute Impact

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I've had this chord progression kicking around for a little while, the product of a voice-leading exercise I was doing. I was super happy with it but never able to incorporate it into a larger arrangement. Recently, I realized I could just run the chord progression through the Midicake ARP and get some inspiration on the song arrangement, and sure enough, that was all it took (along with a few amazing synthesizers and effects). Really happy with where this one ended up.

Full disclosure: I cut and paste a previous drum fill to the outro drum fill, because I felt the outro drum fill didn't match the quality of the earlier one. Seemed a more judicious approach than recording the whole thing again.

Thanks for listening.

Dirtywave M8 - chord progression sequence
Midicake ARP - four-part sequencing arranger for the chord progression
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI Thru out to five devices
DrumBrute Impact through Empress EchoSystem - Drums
Moog Mother 32 through Kinotone Ribbons - Slower mono synth
Michigan Synth Works MSW-810 through Hologram Chroma Console - Faster mono synth
Moog Minitaur through Boss DM-101 - Bass synth
Dreadbox Nymphes through Empress Reverb - Pad synth

Performed and recorded live (minus that small drum edit) to a multitrack recording, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Playlist:

1. Synthfest UK 23: MyVolts - Nifty USB Power Solutions
At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Caroline from MyVolts, and they've added to their panoply of useful power solutions for musicians. MyVolts showcased their new product, the Alchemist power distribution hub, which harnesses the versatility of USB-C to deliver various voltages from 5V to 20V. This means you can power a range of equipment, from vintage synths to modern gear, with one device. They've also taken their USB power innovation to the next level with a step-up 12V power tip, allowing users to draw 18W from USB to power gear like the Electron Analog Four on the go. MyVolts aims to simplify power management for musicians, addressing issues like earthing and noise, and they're actively seeking input from the community to fine-tune their solutions.

In addition to the Alchemist power hub, MyVolts will be releasing their own power banks, USB-C power cables with wattage indicators, and a range of power tips compatible with various voltages. This expansion means users can power a wide range of devices efficiently and conveniently. These products are expected to be available around February or March. MyVolts encourages you to fill out their survey to help them better understand and solve the unique power challenges musicians face.

3. Synthfest UK 23: Analogue Solutions - Ample Desktop Pin matrix
We returned to the Analogue Solutions booth to chat again with Tom who showed us the second synth he’s released this year, Ample. Ample is a 3 VCO synth which combines some of the greatest bits of other Analogue Solutions synths, including a patch pin matrix similar to the Vostok, a sequencer taken from the generator, an interval generator similar to that on the Fusebox, and a 24dB filter akin to that of the Pro One. It even has the same delay circuit from the new Maximus.

There are 3 types of pin for the pin matrix with resistances of 0 ohms on the black pin 10k ohms on the red one and blue giving a value of 100k, which allows for more flexibility in attenuating the signals you patch. Tom told us that Ample is particularly suited to percussion, with its snappy filter, and various clock sources available, and though Ample is in a desktop format, Tom has given us plenty of space between the controls so no accidental knob bumping can occur.

Available October 23

Ample Price: around £2000 plus vat
4. Synthfest UK 23: Expert Sleepers - Analogue Modules
At Synthfest UK 2023, we had the chance to chat with Os from Expert Sleepers, known for their versatile digital modules. However, Os has been exploring the analog side of modular synthesis and has introduced a range of eight analog modules.

Ambient jam with Dreadbox Nymphes, Tasty Chips GR-1, Walrus Slöer, Meris LVX

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

In my previous video, I tried the Walrus Slöer reverb pedal with a few fun synths. During that session, I stumbled into a chord progression on the Nymphes that sounded really lovely with the Slöer, and this track was born from it.

I knew it needed some accompaniment that matched the feeling, so I brought out the GR-1, my favourite granular hardware. With its four-layer timbrality, I could both create textures, and also use a timbre to double the Nymphes for some building/progression. I'm really happy with how hardware explorations can quickly lead to finished songs, and this is no exception.

Dreadbox Nymphes into Walrus Slöer - Pad
Tasty Chips GR-1 into Meris LVX - Four granular synth sounds
Arturia Keystep 37 - MIDI controller
Kenton MIDI Thru (not seen) - MIDI Thru

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Thanks for listening.

Arps and acid with Midicake ARP, Arturia Minifreak, TT-303, Dreadbox Erebus, Roland TR-06, Meris LVX

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

Important note: Midicake sent me over the ARP for free. I rarely get free gear, though I'm very grateful when it happens. There was no expectation for me to put it in a video, and no request from Midicake other than to share my thoughts with them. That said, I really enjoyed using it and I'll be keeping it around, as it strikes a nice balance between the "plug-and-pretty" of the NDLR and the "depth and detail" of a traditional sequencer. I've still got plenty to explore with it. Thanks, Chris!

I started with the ARP, because I wanted to see what it could do. I didn't want to overload the table at first, so I took out the Minifreak, which has voices to spare. Very quickly I was creating arpeggios and sequencing lines I really liked, and easily able to customize the lines to what I was looking for, from rhythms to polymetrics to inversions etc. I started with just standard major and minor chords, but it was extremely easy to customize the chords on the eight chord buttons once I wanted some 7ths and 6ths. And to have a chord sequencer built in was extremely helpful, as it reduced the amount of gear I needed on the table.

Once I had the bones of the song structure, I filled out some more parts, with Erebus on bass and the TR-06 on drums. Finally, I felt it needed something a little gnarlier around the interlude, and luckily I'd just picked up the awesome 303 clone from Cyclone Analogic. Once that was in place, it was just a matter of shaping the song through performance parameters. The final result is pretty cool, and adds some tones, timbres, and textures I haven't been getting as much these days.

Thanks for listening.

Midicake ARP - most sequencing (i.e. for Minifreak and Erebus)
Arturia Minifreak - three synth lines
Dreadbox Erebus - bass synth
Cyclone Analogic Bass Bot TT-303 - acid bass (using its own sequence)
Meris LVX - drive and delay for TT-303
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI splitter/thru box"

Depeche Mode cover - live composing the TR808

video upload by Analogue Solutions

"Son's Uni project - all synths are vintage, already recorded using MC4 and live playing. Roland 100m (x4), Jupiter 8 and others. Last stage is to record in the TR808. This is synced using a Pro Solo with Sync24. Battles with old gear as usual - the Fill button on the TR808 is temperamental and sometimes doesn't trigger the fills."

Yamaha CS-15 Controlled by Kenton Pro Solo MK3

video upload by Bata

"Some noodling using the Nord Wave as a midi keyboard and a Kenton Pro Solo MK3 to control a Yamaha CS-15. This allows you to set the note priority, portamento type, and bend range as well mix an LFO in with the pitch CV for adding pitch modulation from the Nord's aftertouch. Overall it makes the CS-15 way more playable and works great for sequencing."

"Korg PS-3100 analogue, polyphonic semi-modular synthesizer

Thoroughly and carefully restored to its original glory in solid Walnut case.

Yamaha CS-70M Polyphonic Synthesizer SN w/ Kenton MIDI & Book of Voice Strips SN 1223

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"All photos are of the actual synth, the first couple are professional photos, the later ones are what I took.

It has Kenton midi and an original book of voice strips with spares. Some of the factory strips no longer have the data, just too old I guess. See the image for which ones are intact, green is good, red is dead.

The voice card wave shaper chips were hand-selected for perfect sine wave tone color-matching. It has a rebuilt power supply, new copper EMI shielding, an added cap mod that eliminates digital noise during certain operational modes, Key Code cable, updated CMOS proms from the old NMOS, new processor, new envelope timing film caps and more. The battery holder has been replaced with a new unit as someone didn't change the cells frequently enough. The midi output cable was adapted the Key Code connector using spare pins so no holes were drilled into the synth for the midi interface (horrors). Fully calibrated, looks and sounds glorious.

There are three blemishes to the finish shown in the last three images; a "rub mark" on the upper left shoulder (can only be seen in the right light), a small chip in the front veneer underneath the right top shoulder, and a small nick in the paint. Other than those three dings the synth looks like it's new. No paint issues or other wood issues."

Roland MC-202 Micro Composer Analog Synthesizer with Kenton Socket Mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Fabulous analogue sequencer and synthesizer. For me its main strength is as a desktop SH101..LFO not quite as featured and no noise but it’s effectively a SH101 with a MC4 2 channel sequencer added! This has the added Kenton MOD which adds CV & gate (& filter) that bypasses the internal sequencer. Why is this important seeing as the MC202 already has some CV/gate sockets?? Well, the factory CV/Gate sockets are great for connecting to other synths in order to control them with the MC202 Sequencer. However, if you want to use the MC202 synth with an external sequencer it doesn’t; work so well and it is a little laggy as everything has to go via the MC202 in built sequencer brain which is probably 1kb! Kenton made this mod specifically so you can controller the MC202 synth engine from an external source. I used it with a SQ1 and Analogue Solutions Mega City step sequencer - much easier than the in built one!!!! Having said that the inbuilt sequencer is powerful once you get your head around it - 2 channels of CV/gate out and clock out and DIN sync out."
