Theft at Malekko Heavy Industry

Joshua Holley of Malekko Heavy Industry wrote in to let us know there was a break-in at his shop. The thief stole about $65,000 worth of personal items. The insurance company won't cover most of it, so he is offering modular art pieces for sale to hopefully recoup some of his losses.

The following is a repost from his site. Please share this with others.

"On August 7th 2022 two males broke into an adjacent business in my building and managed to make their way into my shop via a shared back door. The thieves stole many personal items, sentimental gifts from colleagues, friends, things I will never see again, about $65,000.00 worth of personal items stolen. After almost 2 months dealing with Insurance companies, ultimately they offered little help, citing a convenient loophole stating since stolen items were personal property the business policies won’t cover most of it, giving me about 12% of the loss.

Out of the many stolen items, the one that hurt the most is a one of a kind Minimoog used by the band Skinny Puppy. Anyone that knows me knows how important of an instrument this is and how devastated I’ve been since the break in. With the exception of a Facebook post hoping to flush the thieves out I haven’t been able to talk about it much, watching the video surveillance of the guy carting it out sickens me, I’ve had to watch it several times, each time waiting a week or so in between viewings because I’m so pissed.

A month ago I came up with an idea to right a wrong so I decided to make a set of art based off the stolen Minimoog. My thought is that to have a set of art based on such an iconic synthesizer would make a great conversation piece, look great on any wall, bring happiness to fellow synth nerds and help replace some of the items that CAN be replaced, and basically help turn the negative energy surrounding this ordeal into a positive.

I’m calling the set “The Greater Right of the Wrong” (see what I did there). I sourced a frame maker to make some custom frames in brown to represent the wood from the instrument, and then I had 5 individual pieces of aluminum made to size, brushed, and anodized. I will laser etch all 5 pieces with the blocks of the instrument. They will look like what’s pictured except each edition will be numbered and have “GROTW xxx/200″ small in the lower corner.

The frames are approximately 12” tall and side by side touching the set is about 2ft 10 inches, and about 3ft with nice spacing in between. This is a pre-order. I have approved the metal and frame samples and now they need to go into production. I anticipate shipping at the end of December. This will be limited to 200 sets, numbered in order sold, and once they are sold I will not make any more.

Thank you in advance to everyone who supports this endeavor. It’s been an extremely personal project that I hope puts a smile on all our faces for years to come."

Thomas Lehn's EMS SYNTHI Stolen

This one was sent in via an anonymous reader. Click the image for details. It just went up and is recent. Spread the word. If you don't want to link here, just grab the image and post it.

Further below is a video featuring Thomas Lehn and his SYNTHI.

Update: larger pics attached. The serial number is 45629.

Update2: more pics below and a list of some unique features on this SYNTHI via Thomas Lehn's website.

1) The two 'kb' disconnect switches above the filter level knob. EMS has never done this on another Synthi.
2) Headphone level dial is to the RIGHT of the speaker mute switch. Nowadays if we add functions here the dial is to the left.
3) The THREE switches in the envelope shaper section. Normally just one, two is rare. There is only one other synth where we built three switches.
4) Just one 3.5 mm jack socket next to matrix and one switch in Reverb section. A unique combination.
5) Label on the top four horizontal rows of the matrix is partly made with pen - not by printing.

Stolen Gear Update!

If you are pressed for time go here.

You might remember the system to the left from this post. It was stolen from cutterfiltoff last month in SE Portland.

Well the system unfortunately has not been recovered, however I do have a some great news. Audio Damage and BMPC have teamed up to offer some goodies for a fundraiser that will not only help replace the system, but will also benefit the Children's Music Foundation.

Full details on what's being raffled here. It's pretty big.

STOLEN GEAR ALERT! BUCHLA MUSIC EASEL - SAN FRANCISCO

via Derek Gedalecia/Headboggle:

"STOLEN!!! SAN FRANCISCO - My brand-new Buchla Music Easel was snatched out of my apartment entryway sometime in the last few days. I live in the Tenderloin district, San Francisco.

Only the suitcase was taken so if anyone gets a wild offer on an incomplete 'like-new/used' Music Easel, please let me know. Closed up, it looks like a normalish suitcase. Some patches and non-standard shorting bars are inside but no A/C or extras

I am offering a reward for return or information. Please contact me by phone or computer, (also pictured by coincidence)
headboggle@gmail.com

Remember: When a door is a jar, it's opened! .. And insure your stuff, like i didn't."

Be sure to see the stolen channel below for more.

Update via Derek:

"The coop venue I last played (that I had checked with before at least twice) located my Easel in pretty much the same condition at coop annex across the Bay.

Apparently there are a lot of people at both organizations so thanks to the help of the synth community, a friend of a friend of a friend recognized the synth in an e-waste/recycling/junk
pile.

Nearly 2 months after it disappeared, the Easel is back in my hands... just going to move on, what a strange and mysterious turn.

Love goes out and back to everyone out there

Best,
Derek"

"The story i'm given is that the venue i played at (which i had already checked with) didn't have it.. but then they closed down for renovations and a bunch of their coop donations got moved to a sister coop.. a lot of people at play here... it ended up as a junked item across the bay essentially until someone in the know took a look, contacted someone who contacted someone else.. then i got word finally today, ... it's been on the lam since June 7th...

Anyway,.. all's well that ends well... insure your stuff! and spread the word when it goes missing cuz you never know what might happen"

Another Stolen Gear Report

Two more. These in via Zayne.

"MS20 is 140360 [picked up here] pretty much looked the same except I broke a key and glued it pretty poorly on the road [pic below]

And the MPC60 is 30425-00486, had a missing volume and hi hat + a sticker that says Atlanta, GA and a bunch of residue. It wasn’t the prettiest 60 ever."

Stolen Gear - Moog Sub Phatty, Akai MPK49

via Christina Horn on Facebook

"Our new (to us) van was broken into last night. In it was my brand new MOOG SubPhatty [ SN SUB04392 ] synthesizer, my main keyboard controller [ Akai MPK49 K11205024611729 ], projector and other things that are imperative for our show to happen. There were a rash of burglaries last night in the Cedar Bluff area where the van was parked. If you see any of these items on EBAY, CRAIGS LIST or at a pawn shop please let me know. The police are helping but it's really up to us to find the stolen items. I have a feeling that together we can do this. Please share this poster as much as you can-together we can accomplish more. I've tagged a few friends who have had experience with these things but tag more. Hugs. And thanks to Reenie Popawheelie for the poster: — with Bill Foster, Greg Horne, Tim Lee and 15 others."

BTW, see the stolen channel below for other reports that have come in over the years.

Scammer Alert: Seth Nemec of Bananalouge, aka modularmod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. This one in via Steven:

"I am writing to forewarn potential synth buyers of a fraudulent ebay seller named Seth Nemec, who goes by the ebay name of 'modularmod.' Nemec sells a variety of analog synth-related equipment and modular synth components (esp. Bananalogue). In the past month, Nemec has engaged in at least three fraudulent synth-related sales on ebay: selling but never delivering a Minimoog Model D, an Oberheim SEM Pro, and an Oberheim Cyclone Midi Arpeggiator. He has also defrauded contributors to a recent Kickstarter campagin to the tune of almost $23,000. In each case, Nemec received payment and spent the funds freely on ebay, but never delivered the goods promised.

Ebay seller feedback
Kickstarter feedback

If you were a victim of one of Semec's ebay scams, please contact ebay or Paypal directly to determine if the purchase was covered by Buyer's Protection. If you were a victim of his Kickstarter scam, please contact other Kickstarter contributors at the link above about possible legal action that is being pursued by some of the affected parties.

Buyer beware!

Steven"

If anyone has any additional comments or information feel free to leave a comment or send me an email. Seth Němec has contacted me via Facebook in the past. I was going to reach out to him but his page is no longer online.

Bad Trader / Scam Warning

Full thread on Muff's here. You be the judge. In short, two separate people are claiming to have been ripped off and a third received recent trade requests. Normally scams in general would not go up here, but this one is particularly messed up because the person in question appears to be part of the community. This isn't your typical anonymous Craigslist or eBay scam.

The main tips I got from reading the thread is

1. FULLY insure your stuff in case something goes south
2. Make sure you get SIGNATURE confirmation on items you ship and not just Delivery confirmation. They are different.
3. Only trade with people who are widely known, active and recommended in the community.
4. If possible, trade in person in a VERY public place, and cover your back.

Always be careful and use common sense. Assume the worst and be paranoid. If the person doesn't understand why you are taking precautions, they are not worth your time.

Update: The Muff's thread is now public for those that are not members of the forum.

Also see this post for an update for various aliases he has gone by.

Lost/Stolen BugBrand BugModular - Need Help!

Please Help Spread the Word. If you have a synth site, post it, if you are on a synth forum, email list, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, share it. If you found this synth, as tempting as it might be to keep it, please return it. Think of all the karma points you'd earn.

via Tom Bugs

"I just heard that a compact BugModular system was lost/stolen after a gig in London recently. It is very recognisable as it was composed of various early/proto modules and I sold it off last year to raise funds when I moved.

There are some details on a MW forum thread here

And pictures from the Matrixsynth archive.

If anyone happens to hear/see anything, please let me know or contact details for Mari are on the MW forum thread.

Thanks,
Tom"

via Qualia on Muff's
"Lost on the 30th July between 6am and 8am, in either Hackney Wick or Hackney Central, perhaps on the overground train between the two. Housed in a large black soft carry case, with other items, AKG contact mic, Mackie mixer and various jack cables (Pink&Green).

This was a gift and is very sorely missed, please do contact if found or offered. Holds the folowing modules in order from left to right: Bugbrand - PWR, Bugbrand ENV1, Bugbrand Syn1, Bugbrand Syn2A x2, Bugbrand DD2, Bugbrand DD1,Bugbrand PR3A, PRC1, Bugbrand UTL2.

Please call or email me with any information: 07512336125 or marikingface@gmail.com"

And via BugBrand on Muff's:
"articular noticeable details -

Black Frame - the case is one of the old black ones, so is heavier than the more recent silver ones. There aren't all that many of the old style ones out there.

End-Cheeks - similarly, the cheeks are meant for the regular style frames so you can see there are 5 extra holes on each end + the nuts are attached on the outside.

Several thin-panel (ie. early/test) modules - very few of these are out in the wild. The thin-panel ones -> SYN1 Weevil, DD2 LFO/DCMix, DD1 BalMod/LPG, PRC1 PT Delay, UTL2 Output Mix.

The joystick is completely one-off."

Vintage Serge Modular Stolen From Bard College

This one in via Daniel

"my alma mater, bard college, just had a devastating theft. someone broke into the electronic music studio and ripped a panel out of their 4 panel Serge Modular. I spent two years learning about electronic music on this very instrument. The loss of the panel is utterly detrimental to the system—this was the panel which had all the filters and slope generators on it.

THIS IS A CUSTOM PANEL. if you see/find anything like it, it's probably that very one.

a list of the modules in the missing panel: (L to R)

Variable Slope FIlter
Dual Universal Slope Generator
Resonant Equalizer
C/M (control module)
dual preamp/envelope follower
Dual Universal Slope Generator (2nd)"

The following is the flyer and contact info:

"WHO TOOK THE SERGE from Blum n119?
WE DON’T CARE
WE JUST WANT IT BACK
SOMEONE MUST KNOW
PLEASE JUST RETURN IT

NO QUESTIONS ASKED

Update: I created a Stolen label for these. Click on it to see more reported stolen gear. If you know what happened to any of these feel free to comment or let me know and I'll update the post.

Stolen Gear Recovered!!!

see this post for reference

via Jeremy of MODEL WORKER:
"Through some very odd circumstances (miracle?) all of our synths have returned to us,
it seems largely related to them finding the post you put up for us. After over a month we had figured they were probably gone forever... It all came back packed neatly in the back of a van.

Attached is a pic of 1 half of the gear before it was stuffed into 1 of two cars to take it back home."

Stolen Gear - Help Needed

via Jeremy of MODEL WORKER: "This past weekend my bands practice space (in chicago) was broken into and A LOT of gear was stolen. Unsurprisingly a number of these items you have inadvertently helped us track down with your blog.

A few items here are not synths but I'm going to include them anyways as they were part
of this heist. I'm just hoping people can keep their eyes open and just maybe help some of these items we spent so much time acquiring, repairing and recording, find their way back to us."
