Tickets are available for each event separately. There's a discount if you order the Saturday Expo and evening gig at the same time.

Saturday daytime: Synth Expo with performances

Saturday evening: Blancmange, Ultramarine and Molten Modular

Sunday: DIY Workshops from Thonk and Befaco.

http://www.syntheast.com"

Update: press release follows:

"Pouring from the heart of Norfolk, hosted by the Norwich Arts Centre, curated by Electronic Sound Magazine and run by Molten Modular, Synth East is back. After a devastatingly successful 2023 show the sold-out Norfolk-based festival of synthesizers returns in 2024 but this time it's been widened into a full weekend experience.

The all new Friday evening Synth East event is curated by Electronic Sound Magazine and kicks off with (possibly) the UK premiere of a documentary on electronic musician Morton Subotnick, who at 90 years old, is known affectionately as the Father of Techno. It’s called Subotnick, Portrait of an Electronic Music Pioneer by Waveshaper Media who brought us the intoxicating 2014 documentary, I Dream of Wires.

Following the film we have writer, broadcaster, comedian and musician Adam Buxton chatting with Synth East alumni Steve Davis about music, life and modular synths. Finishing off the evening we have an ambient set from modular musician Luke Sanger as we relax into some beers in preparation for what’s to come for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday’s Synth East Expo is a carnival of control voltage, a festival of synth sounds and a party of epic performances. Dozens of manufacturers will be filling the Arts Centre with synths and modulars to give you an opportunity check out their marvellous machines and bask in the glow of synthesiser technology. You’ll be able to chat with the makers about the gear and even have a personal demonstration. Simply walking through the auditorium in the company of such exciting gear is completely thrilling.

Throughout the day we’ll be having some performances from local artists Hardwired and Tristan Burfield before we once again embark on the awesome modular experiment of the all-star patch off. This year, joining Robin "Molten Modular" Vincent, Steve Davis and Gaz Williams will be Mylar Melodies, Nina Richards, and Jason Jervis. These are unique, improvised performances that you’ll never see anywhere else.

Saturday night’s synthesiser explosion features the 80s synth legends Blancmange who have kindly agree to fit us in before their extensive Everything is Connected: The Best Of Blancmange tour of the UK. Supporting Blancmange we have eclectic electronic music duo Ultramarine featuring Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond. And in the warm up slot is our own Robin “Molten Modular” Vincent and a special guest.

On Sunday we are hosting some Eurorack DIY workshops presented by Befaco and Thonk. They will be held at Electronic Sound HQ at Capital House over a few hours. The idea is that you buy a ticket for the workshop and then order the kit that you hope to build directly with Befaco or Thonk.

Synth East 2024 runs from the 23rd to the 25th of February. Each event is available as a separate ticket and there's a bundle deal on buying the Saturday Expo and evening performance together.

Our intention is to revel in the world of synthesizers, modular and electronic musical boxes. We want to explore sound through performance, discussion and hands-on interaction. It's a lot of fun and open to anyone with an interest in bleeps, tones and noises."

Offgrid Shuffle in Eurorack: LoFi Hiphop with Stolperbeats

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Here's a modular lofi hiphop patch that came out so leftfield it was too fun not to share! It's built around #Stolperbeats and Befaco's fantastic Percall Quad Drum VCA, with Stolperbeats sequencing the shuffled gates and a wooden baseboard amplified and routed through our #TausenddB and #Multiplikand patched as a texture control.

Stolperbeats, 'beats tripping over themselves' in German, is our upcoming drum trigger sequencer designed to create shuffled beats influenced by artists like Flying Lotus, Hiatus Kaiyote and J Dilla. We really love those beats and used to reconstruct them for our tracks in the DAW, so we ended up digging deep into the techniques how real-life drummers like Questlove from The Roots or Perrin Moss from Hiatus Kaiyote play these shuffles.

This patch is almost a little hack as it uses Stolperbeats' clock outputs as a musical signal. Subdiv outputs the swung clock or a related set of tuplet subdivisions, perfect for syncing up cartesian sequencers like Make Noise Rene that advance one step per clock tick. Sync plays a straight unswung metronome ranging from once every four bars to 24 ppq, great for keeping a Delay or LFO in time.

Here, Stolperbeats' clock signals are patched to trigger Percall's VCA envelopes, shaping the sounds picked up from the board with piezo contact mics, and creating groove from the offset flams of the shuffled and straight clocks. Enrica is performing the drum rolls by changing the subdivisions on the fly. It's all held together by the lovely blips from Winterbloom 's Juno-inspired DCO Castor & Pollux on kick and a Patching Panda Hatz patch on snare duty.

We'll be showcasing this setup tonight at Muelheim Modular's lovely synth shop in Köln Mülheim. It's part of Mülheimer Nacht 2022 so if you're in Cologne, swing by and say hi! You will be able to try out the patches and modules hands-on. If you want to build our synth #DIY kits, we're hosting a workshop at Superbooth in Berlin, 13.05.2022, 17:00. If you are unable to make it to Berlin, kits are available at Muelheim Modular and Exploding Shed (EU), Thonk (UK) and dsp.coffee (US), or visit our website and mail us directly."

Solder a DIY module with us at Superbooth 2021!

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"We've made you a little something, and you can build it at Superbooth 2021! A lot of friends online and offline have asked us about TausenddB, the little four channel preamp eurorack module we used to record our piezo videos with, so we've made it into a DIY Kit. And we will premiere it at Superbooth 2021 in Berlin, where you can build it with us in a workshop!

Get tickets for the workshop: https://www.superbooth.com/de/events/...

Tausend dB was originally designed as a small run of helper modules for space explorers, a public audio installation at Reading FringeFestival 2019 and in collaboration with visualists WARPED TYPE.

It was inspired by Tom Whitwell's MusicThing Microphonie and Mutable Instruments Ears, but we needed a different set of features: more channels, because we had a lot of contact mics, so we packed four channels into 6HP; mute switches, because we wanted to be able to act quickly when things get out of hand; and a secret row of expander pin headers in the back, so we could boost CV and audio from our favourite gear and devboards with jumper wires: Bastl Kastl, Korg Volca Modular, Electrosmith Daisy, Teensy and Arduino.

Jumpers in the back let you select whether you want to filter DC offset.

Check out the other awesome workshops too: Koma Elektronik, Touellskouarn, Befaco, Leaf Audio, Fase Lunare, Shakmat, AtoVproject and Jolinlab will all be there to build awesome stuff with you! Aaaaaand we might sneak peak a module at TiNRS’s booth, who will present a lot of great new modules as well ❤️ So come check them out and say hi!"

SUPERBOOTH21 in 6 Weeks - Program and Special Event Tickets

SUPERBOOTH21 is coming this September 15 through 18. See https://www.superbooth.com/ for full details on the event.

Press release on the Program and Special Event Tickets follows:

Berlin, August 2021

SUPERBOOTH21 in 6 weeks - the program and the special event tickets

Many national and international exhibitors and their innovative synthesizers and effect devices attract thousands of music makers to FEZ-Berlin every year. Equally attractive are the numerous concerts and special events. These inclu- de many workshops that invite you to join in, the SchneidersLaden Tour and the comfortable arrival by boat shuttle from Berlin Mitte.

Stage program: This year, SUPERBOOTH21 will feature four stages. In addition to the auditorium and the seaside stage, two new venues will be added: the Finn- hütten and the Fuchsbau.

In the auditorium, there will be Gesprächskonzerte (lecture concerts) and talks - with Jean-Michel Jarre, Reinhold Heil, Atom TM and T.Raumschmiere among others. Early Wednesday evening, the Miller-Zillmer-Foundation will present it- self to invited guests in the auditorium, where it will celebrate its two-year an- niversary. This year the Miller-Zillmer-Foundation makes possible the workshop series with Gammon and his Modular Synthesizer Ensemble, as well as - in co- operation with Mute Artists Ltd. - the headlining concerts on the seaside stage every evening: Yann Tiersen, hackedepicciotto, JakoJako and Pole.

The past 18 months have left room for many artists to go into the studio and write new music. SUPERBOOTH21 is one of the first opportunities to bring the results of these processes on stage and so there are some premieres to see. Yann Tiersen (Mute, release date: August 27, 2021) presents his new album „Kerber“. Also from hackedepicciotto (Mute), st.raumen (release date:
30. August 2021) and Pole (Mute) there is something new to hear.

The seaside stage will also feature Maarten Vos, Bloody Mary, Carolina Eyck, Kitmun and Ain TheMachine X SBNH, among others. The stage at the Finnhütten will be hosted by the legendary Tresor. For the 30th anniversary of the Berlin club and label, there will be concerts every night at 8:30 p.m. by e.g. Z.I.P.P.O, Carlota and Artik.

The ever-popular Gesprächskonzerte will mainly take place at the Fuchsbau. On this new stage, SOMA Laboratory, Verbos Electronics, Haken Audio, Polyend, U-HE, Joranalogue and Bitwig, among others, will musically present their pro- ducts. In addition, you can also get involved yourself at the Fuchsbau and contri- bute to the musical background of the event at the Modular Carousel.
Workshops & DIY: The various DIY workshops will take place in the cozy ambien- ce of the DIY tent at the Fuchsbau. Workshops offered are from Befaco, Leaf Audio, Making Sound Machines, Touellskouarn and Shakmat Modular, among others. Due to the severe limitation of places, tickets for the DIY workshops should be booked early.

Other workshops include the Tapeloop Workshop on September 18 (for up to 5 participants), the Kreativ Klangsafari in cooperation with the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and of course Gammon‘s Modular Synthesizer Ensemble, who will once again be working on a daily performance with students and presenting it at 1:30pm.

Tickets for many workshops can already be booked online and can be found here.

Livestream & virtuelle Gesprächskonzerte (lecture concerts): Those who are unable to attend SUPERBOOTH21 in person can look forward to the daily lives- tream. Here, the highlights of the various stages will be shown in a three-hour program. This also includes the virtual Gesprächskonzerte, which offer exhibitors who cannot come to SUPERBOOTH21 the unique opportunity to present them- selves to the audience simultaneously online and on site - live on screen in the auditorium. Among other things, the Gesprächskonzerte by and with Noise Engi- neering and Animal Factory Amplification will be presented here.

Boat shuttle: The boat shuttle departs daily from the old historic harbor in Berlin Mitte in the direction of FEZ-Berlin. The landing stage can be found at Mellow- park. From here there are precise signs to find the right way to FEZ-Berlin.

Tickets for the boat shuttle are available now and are very limited. It is advisable to be quick! Here you can get the tickets.

SchneidersLaden Tour: The tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at Germa- ny‘s most important synthesizer store - SchneidersLaden. For this tour Andreas Schneider has asked one of his first employees to tell interested guests about the history of SchneidersLaden, SchneidersBuero and Superbooth – and to provide insights into the current showrooms and behind the scenes of SchneidersLaden in Berlin Kreuzberg.

What‘s left to say? Stay healthy everyone and get vaccinated so we can spend a wonderful SUPERBOOTH21 together in September!

And: Day tickets for SUPERBOOTH21 are currently still available for all time periods on superbooth.com and can be combined at will with the special event tickets for workshops, boat shuttle and the exclusive tour through Schneiders- Laden.
Tickets for DIY workshops are only valid in combination with any day ticket for SUPERBOOTH21. All special event tickets are strictly limited and can only be booked in advance of the event.
All tickets are available exclusively via pre-sale on superbooth.com - there will be no box office to ensure a contactless transaction.

Please note that access to the exhibition grounds will only be granted with a daily negative rapid test, complete approved vaccination or convalescent status.

Portland Synth Library

Did you know there was a "synth library" in Portland, OR? Well, there is. Some details on it follow, but before that, they are seeking funding on GoFundMe here. This one is in via lord zool.

"S1, in partnership with 4MS Company, is home to the Synth Library, a publicly-accessible resource in Portland, Oregon. Since spring 2016, the Synth Library has hosted regular workshops to educate and empower new people and communities to engage with modular synthesis.

After attending a sliding-scale introductory workshop, participants can sign up for open library hours to access any of the modular rows and other gear available in the space. A facilitator will always be in the room to help answer any questions that come up during your exploration.

The Intro to Synthesis course (or an equivalent competency exam) is required before gaining access to the Synth Library; this course costs $25 and includes one month of membership. Monthly membership is $15. Scholarship opportunities are available for those unable to pay.

We’re committed to representing and empowering all types of people and providing the opportunity to learn comfortably from and alongside peers. To this end, we offer female/non-binary-only courses, as well as open enrollment courses available to all.

Artists-in-Residence at S1 will have the opportunity to check out gear from the library to compose and perform pieces. We will begin accepting applications for our residency program soon.

Befaco Workshops

If you are interested in setting up a DIY workshop in your city or event, Befaco has you covered. Here are the details on their workshops via the Befaco workshop page (or you can contact them directly here):

"Our workshops consist of a working group in which each makes its own complete machine or some modules for a existing machine.

They are free workshops in the sense that everyone works at their own pace in the module you want from those available at that time.

In each workshop you will receive a kit with a step by step manual and all necessary parts .

You do not need any experience in electronics and we started from scratch , teaching welding and follow the manual like a sort of electronic puzzle .

FAQ:
- Do we need knowledge of electronics?

No. It starts from absolute zero , even if it is good before going to the shop to try to read a little about it and be patient . Note that a modular synth is not a “Just one weekend project”

- What modules should I choose?

This depends on each.

Basic modules that everyone will need are the power supply, Power bus and the output module and from there … well all depends if you already have a system to which you want to add modules or want to start to make you one

- How many modules I can make in one workshop?

A normal rate , you can mount one or maybe two workshop modules , depending on their complexity and your experience / skill. If you want to do more modules and do not want to wait for the next workshop you can buy kits to continue working at home, and bring them to you to test at the next workshop .

- How many seats are in each workshop and how can I reserve one?

When booking the place will have to reserve the kit or kits you want to build .
The reservation is made through this mail. (Remember to indicate on what city is the workshop you like)

- Case / rack for modules is supplied ?

Currently we have two models of Cabinet/rack and a starter kit including box, power supply and power bus .

Also if you want to hop a box on your own, we have aluminium rails and other hardware necessary to place the modules in it and can advise on how to build a box according to your idea.

- Will I need to bring tools ?

Ideally bring pen, multimeter and a decent soldering iron.

If you don’t have these tools we can borrow some during the workshop.

- How much is the workshop? The price of the workshop is included in the price of the modules that you supply . This price varies from city to city depending on the cost of travel and accommodation as well as the conditions that contribute to host the workshop in each case.

If you want to check the price of a particular city please contact us

- What if the modules do not work? - How many workshops are enough to learn how to build synthesizers ? say that three lifetimes are not enough, but you’ll learn enough to distinguish components , soldering, printed circuits and understand the basics (and you will build your own modules is clear ) . The workshops are resolved and raise questions but if you want to pursue the subject will have to jump completely in to it and putting in hours on your own. - Would it be possible that workshops in my city? It is possible if you can find enough people to make it worth going (about 15 people). We are open to suggestions so if you want to organize a workshop in your city please contact us."
