"The Zillion is a single track algorithmic MIDI sequencer based on the principles of the Triadex Muse. The Muse used counters and a shift register to generate more than a million musical melodies.

The Zillion expands on these ideas to add more features and functionality, providing a zillion possibilities for you to discover.

There are 16 operating modes. These include Playback, Tempo, Swing, Direction, Loop, Transpose, Scale, Scale Program, Melody, Rhythm, Velocity, Theme, Shift Register, MIDI OUT, MIDI IN, and Sync.

PLAYBACK
The Playback mode allows you to Stop, Start, Restart, Pause, and Manually Step through a sequence.

TEMPO
The Tempo mode allows you to set the rate the sequence will play back at. The tempo can range from 25-250 BPM. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one tempo to another, or can also be changed gradually.

SWING
Swing adds a human feel by delaying the start of every other note by a set percentage. The swing range is from 50-75%. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one swing value to another, or can also be changed gradually.

DIRECTION
Four consectutive directions can be entered to determine if the internal counters will increment or decrement, causing a pattern to play forwards or backwards each time a loop point is reached.

LOOP
A loop point will cause the internal counters ro reset, limiting the number of steps a pattern will play before repeating. The loop point can range from 1-16 beats, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 bars, or can also be set to free-running. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one point point to another, or can also be changed gradually..

TRANSPOSE
Sequences can be transposed by up to 36 semitones within the Transpose mode. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one transpose value to another, or can also be changed gradually..

SCALE
There are 99 Scales that determine what notes the sequencer can generate. Scales 1-16 are presets, while scales 17-99 are user definable. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one scale to another, or can also be gradually changed.

SCALE PROGRAM
User scales can be programmed with the Zillion's front panel controls, or using any MIDI controller keyboard. Each scale holds eight pitch values. You can also think of these scales as simple 8-step sequences that can then be "remixed" by the sequencer algorithms. A global tranpose feature is also included in this mode, where any MIDI controller keyboard can be used to tranpose sequences.

MELODY
In the Melody mode you can select up to four sources to determine the melody being generated. These sources include counters, shift register outputs, or can also be set simply on or off.

RHYTHM
In the Rhythm mode you can select up to two sources to determine the rhythm being generated. These sources include counters, shift register outputs, or can also be set simply on or off. Rhythms generated will include note-off, note-on (50% duration), note-on (100% duration), or 32nd notes. In addition there is a Rhythm Density value ranging from 0-255. This parameter determines how complex or full the rhythm will be. There are also 3 possible GateTypes to further determine what types of rhythms are generated.

"Green Bokeh Trance" (Future Retro Zillion & Hydrasynth) - modularman

video upload by modularman

"Hello Dear Friends - I recently watched an interesting talk here on YouTube by musicologist Ted Gioia, where he posits that when music is at least ten minutes long, the listener's brainwaves sync up with the rhythm of the music, and can create a trance state. So with this idea in mind, I decided to record a longer piece to attempt to produce this trance state. The tools I used are the Future Retro Zillion to generate the notes into the ASM Hydrasynth. No other treatments or external devices were used to create this piece. Every sound is made by the Hydrasynth in one take.

A tip of the hat to Jeffery Beach of Beachfront Productions, for providing free use video clips on his website.

Does it work? You tell me. This sort of thing isn’t for everyone, but if you enjoy lying back, closing your eyes and meditating to pseudo-random generative style music, this just might be your cup of bananas.

Let’s hear from you!"

Elektron Rytm + Strom, A4 + Future Retro Zillion

Published on Nov 5, 2014 Crabfugium

"Here's a bit of fun with generated sequences on the Elektrons. All tracks on the Rytm were created using the Euclidean pattern generator in the Strom iPad app. I set up 16 patterns, generated a kick and snare on each pattern, then moved on to the closed hat for each pattern, etc. I did plenty of tweaking by sliding tracks around in time and whatnot, but I don't think that I manually entered any of the trigs. There was quite a bit of Strom randomization happening when I created the kit, too. I didn't use any samples, though.

The Analog Four stuff started out as two patterns with a snare on track 2, a liquidy-sounding percussive thing on track 3, and some bass synth stuff on track 4. Track 1 was never unmuted during this video. I copied those two alternating patterns out to fill a bank of 16 patterns and chained them up. Then I set Future Retro's Zillion loose on the synth track, recording one live pass through all 16 patterns and letting it overwrite anything that got in it's way. I was pretty surprised when it worked out this well. There are no parameter locks used on either machine yet, except for whatever was already embedded in the two pre-existing A4 patterns.

The folding aluminum frame is an EIT-1, made by Company Of Quail. It's a seriously solid piece of machinery- very highly recommended if you're looking for a 2-tier Elektron stand.

The AS-1 was a pleasant surprise - it's built like a tank and contains one amazing synth voice from the Prophet 6. We're currently investigating the sound capabilities to its fullest, so be prepared for a sound exploration video in the near future!"

Circle Synth

"Something interesting is happening in software synthesizer design: after years of trying to boast more of ingredient “xx” (whether it’s modulation, eight-zillion-point envelopes or other whiz-bang features), the new challenge is to make the user experience itself different. The challenge: don’t just do more sonically — make it easier to actually make music. I’ve personally been a big fan of the elegant tabs in Cakewalk’s Rapture, the minimalist aesthetic of Ableton’s Operator, and the drag-and-drop routing in Native Instruments’ Massive. Now, could one instrument really leap forward in terms of guiding its design?"
