Dreadbox Nymphes Review - Affordable 6 Voice Analogue Poly Synth

video upload by

https://www.signalsounds.com/dreadbox-nymphes-polyphonic-desktop-analogue-synth

"I've owned or used a lot of Dreadbox synthesizers, from the early incarnations of the Erebus when I spotted it in a modular synth shop and it blew my mind. I blame both Dreadbox and Jason from Signal Sounds for bankrupting me since then with my slide into Eurorack.

Anyway, I wasn't convinced about the Nymphes when I first saw it advertised, as the menu control seemed a bit confusing and the synth lacking some features. However, when I saw the price was 'just' £449, I decided to take the plunge, and I am glad I did.

Here's my take on the Dreadbox Nymphes. What its features are, its strengths, whether or not that menu system actually is a problem or not... and my general experience using it so far. All of it is entwined with some wee bits and pieces of sounds direct from the synth itself. Don't take my slagging of Americans too seriously... it's what you all deserve for regularly abusing me for my accent. :*

PLANT MUSIC - Peppers

"The music in this video was played by a peppers plant. I just gave the peppers some sounds to play with. I think she had fun...

If you want more information about the modules I used in this setup, please have a look at the rack on ModularGrid: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/v...

Roland VOCODER SCV-350 // I LOVE this thing

video upload by Starsky Carr

"A look at Roland's Vocoder SVC-350. It's probably the best your money can buy - The Moog is hugely expensive and the EMS Vocoder 2000 and 3000 are incredibly rare (and equally expensive). This isn't bad value in comparison, they seem to sell for around £1500. BUT.. .sounds. a lot better than any other hardware I've used... but then most of them are digital - nothing wrong with that but they don't have the clarity for some reason. I'm not sure if the Digitech Talker has analog circuitry but that sounds very clear too. check out my vocoder roundup for more." [posted here]

Getting High with the Make Noise Erbe-Verb (music performance)

video upload by Red Means Recording

"I recently got the Make Noise Erbe-Verb, a wild algorithmic reverb that is much more of a sound design effect than a proper reverb. That's ok, I got lots of reverb, I'd rather play with it like it's a crazy friend.

So this jam was a test of how Erbe sounds on drums. I added a TON of new samples to my Erica Synth Sample Drum and will be doing a lot more drum loop worth with it.

Nebulae is also in play, since I just make a bunch of new samples for it using the Native Instruments Arkhis Kontant Library."

How To Use the CV BUS - with the GLIDE + NOISE Module or Mini Mod Eurorack Modular System

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This video shows you how you can use the CV BUS with a CV Controller (in this case an Arturia Keystep) via the Glide + Noise module to control the pitch of multiple VCOs, and send the signal on to a filter or any other destination, thus making patching simpler, faster and tidier. There is also a section detailing the basics of what you'll need to know about bus boards to ensure that you can use both the CV BUS and GATE BUS, however a detailed video regarding using both will be coming soon.
Also, it briefly mentions how the PRECISION VOLTAGES module can compliment this system, and help you to expand the CV range of your controller, in case you are having trouble reaching the lowest notes your synth can produce.

The AJH SYNTH MINI MOD system is based on the original Moog Minimoog Model D, but greatly expanded into Eurorack Modular format. Its high-end design and manufacture provides authentic vintage tones, with modern usage sensibilities, featuring substantial controls and socket layouts to provide a modular synth that is a true instrument to be played.

The GLIDE + NOISE module can be used with any Eurorack modular system where access to the CV BUS is needed, along with a classic Glide function, and 3 simultaneously available noise outputs - white, pink, and red.

EML 400/401 - Rare 1970s Sequencer & Synth System

"Rare EML Electrocomp model 400 / 401 system comprised of a dual 16 stage (or single 32 stage) quantized sequencer paired with a 2 oscillator voice module with a multimode filter. These rarely pop up for sale as few were made but they are powerful systems with sophisticated features especially for the time. This one is in great condition other than some broken latches which could be replaced. Although EML used heavy duty metal latches on their other gear they used plastic ones on the 400 and they tend to be broken. Functionally the system is working great and sounds awesome. Though the sequencer gets all the attention when folks discuss the 400/401, I'm also a big fan of the synth section. Totally unique sound capable of some pretty wild and aggressive sounds you cant get out of a Moog or Arp. It is a basically a EML 500 with fewer mod options on tap though you can patch for them.

More from the designer:
"Following the traditions of , , and other early synth developers, the EML engineers crafted an analog sequencer that bears little resemblance to today's MIDI sequencers. 'The 400 series sequencer was my baby,' [EML designer, John] Borowicz admits. 'I loved that box. It was killer. I'd say that was one of the first hybrids, because it was analog and digital. One of the problems with analog circuits was tuning the bloody things. So we built a voltage quantizer, and then jumped on the bandwagon, since they were the big boys on the block. Our quantizer was basically set up for 12-tone diatonic, but you could tune it to play microtones too, and it would still maintain its quantizing feature, which was pretty hip.

"'It also had voltage-controlled envelope generators, which as far as I know was a first, too. You could patch that thing, load it up in increments of 16 stages, and the control voltages could be either locked in - quantized - or you could set it to be variable, either way. By patching, you could get the thing to do retrograde permutations: It would go through a sequence as you programmed it with all the rhythm, and then you could start to do permutations by jumping around in a very progammatic fashion to different stages. It could go through stages 1-16, and then 1, 15, 2, 14, 3, 12, and so on. You could line up the patterns however you wanted. That was an amazing little box.

"'It also had a voice module with it, the 401, which was basically a scaled-down 500: dual oscillators with switch-selectable waveforms, a multimode filter, and the voltage-controlled envelope generators. At that point, you only had AR (attack/release) envelopes, but you could get multiple stages by gating the voltage correctly.'"

Dub Techno with Digitakt, Modular & Juno 60

video upload by Martin Stürtzer

"This is my last track for 2021, thanks a lot to everyone who listened to my music this year and supported my music!

SETUP in this track:
All drums and bass sounds are from the Digitakt. It also sequences the Modular on Midi channel 2 & 3. The Modular is playing two voices with the Mutable Instruments modules Plaits and Braids. At the beginning I play a Chord on the Juno60 that keeps going using the "hold" function. Mixing and effects are within Ableton using the Valhalla DSP Delay and Vintage Verb. The Midi Fighter Twister controls a few FX parameters and volume levels."
