"Don't leave me this way" - on Böhm Station One

YouTube via organfairy.

"This melody was originally performed by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes though many people know it in a more up-tempo version by the Communards.

I use the German Böhm workstation for my version of this disco-soul classic and in this video I investigate the wiring of the expression pedal plugs on the backside of the instrument as I want to adapt an old Elka pedal for the Böhm.

The green thing I hold in my hands are a test cable with a small screwdriver attached in one end and a 100 Ohm resistor in the other. This way I can connect the wires in the plug for testing where the switches are supposed to be but at the same time I don't have to worry about shorting the power supply."

Orla DSE 24 (DSE24) Expander vintage Midi Synthesizer

via this auction

Googlish translation of auction details: "Orla DSE vintage 24 (DSE24) expander MIDI synthesizer (baugl. Bohm)

Great device with extensive possibilities for sound design. Bubbling, hissing noise, vibration, ... 4 oscillators. With a manual and a brochure will be presented in the device. It is similar to the dynamics of Bohm 12/24 and includes all the extensions. Flawless function and very good condition! Without power cord, it is the usual rubber connector."

"That's me" - on Böhm Station One

YouTube via organfairy

"It has been a while since I used the Böhm workstation. Last time it was for "They say it's gonna rain" and only for some of the arrangement.
But this time the complete song is played on the Böhm. The GEM keyboard is only used as a MIDI controller since the Böhm doesn't have a keyboard.
I have had numerous requests to do more ABBA songs so this time I am playing "That's me" from the Arrival album. I recall this song from my early childhood in the 70's so I thought it could be fun to do the video in a style resembling this period of time. So I found my old (half) mirrorball and a red rhinestone t-shirt and that´s it - and that´s me..... "

Sunset is the oldest colourizer

YouTube via drboehmlebt
"Here is a new piece of music from me. The title is a hommage to the great (and sadly late) Nam June Paik. For the video clip I filmed out of my window and forced the record through TroikaTronix Isadora (c) old school like video synthesizer effects like colourizing, chroma and luma keying. The randomly modulated video effects were rendered in real time. The music was played by me with analogue synthesizers: Doepfer MS-404 (bass drone sound), Doepfer System A-100 (sequencer bass line), Crumar Multiman S/Yamaha Electone Organ (string ensemble sounds).

Because of the limitation in UTube I am only allowed to present an excerpt of the full lenght (18 minutes) video...

So turn off the light and play it loud! ;-)"

Bohmworld

You can find everything Böhm at Böhmworld.
The site is in German. You browse the site in Googlish here.
Anyone know if they are the same company that brought us the Boehm SoundLab? I did a quick search on the site and didn't see it.

Note that Böhm also brought us the hobbytron. via Wulfhard:
"This was a DIY-kit "to make appetite" for the bigger Boehm-organs and for testing your solder skins, because Dr. Böhm organs where sold as kits. So if you finished the "Hobbyton", you could start with a kit of a "Starsound" or other real ones - rather optimistic, if you look at the guts" You can hear an mp3 of it here.

Also via Wulfhard:
"This crazy guy [crazy is a good thing :)] got a 1977's kit of a Dr. Böhm Organ in the year and built it up in 2006-2007 (Dr. Böhm got bankrupt in 1990 at the end of the home organ boom - it's said that they had more work on repairing failed DIY-kits than selling new ones...)

http://www.boehmworld.com/fntbul.htm

The 3x keyboard is made of 3000 pieces already - complete organs could be 30.000 pieces in total (at the price of a Mercedes Benz). But they could be build up in chunks, for example one manual and one oscillator first - you received the kit parts in a kind of subscription. It's not known how many begun kits are rusting in german cellars...."

"They say it's gonna rain" - on Böhm Station One

YouTube via organfairy

"I don't know very much about this German workstation. In fact I have only found out a fraction of its capabilities. But I have used it to play the rhytm and some of the voices on this song. The rest is played on the Yamaha organ which also acts as keyboard for the Böhm."

BOEHM SOUNDLAB MODULAR

YouTube via whiteeagle1973made
"A Looped patch, made in the Boehm Soundlab modular. If you set the VCA gain at the maximum, the sound stays always on, no matter what the ADSR settings are. So this is useful for loops and complex effects. This clip is somewhat dark, the sound is captured by the camera's mic, but you get an idea what this little beast is capable for."

Vintage Digital Drum Machine

flickr by thingstocomerecords

full size

Anyone know what this is?

Update: be sure to check out the comments. Some info via Jan-Hinnerk: "The pic shows a Dr. Böhm (ahhh…those umlauts!) Digital Drums. Boehm (let's use this spelling for the sake of sanity) was a German company offering a range of electronic organs, both in assembled and kit form. In the 80s they ventured into (a) synthesizers and (b) digital drums, the first result being the Digital Drums. I can't remember exactly, but to my best knowledge the Digital Drums appeared in 1984 on the German market. It came with a variety of preset patterns plus offered you to program your own rhythms in realtime. A friend assembled one in kit form and made some mistakes on handling the ROM chips for some sounds, e.g. the handclaps sounded like someone hit his knuckles together, but apart from that it sounded very realistic for its time. I used it for my first 4-track-recordings in summer 1985. Big, chunky machine – really nice."

legoluft - Circuit Bending and Synths

Jason posted a link on the Analog Heaven list to this Dr. Bohm Digital Drums image. Of course I had to check it out. I backtracked to the root of the site and I found legoluft. The site is in German, but of course you can use Google translator to browse the site in English. There's some pretty cool stuff there worth checking out. Gotta love Google translation - informative and humorous at the same time.

The description for the Boehm Digital Drums Google translated:
"Dr. Boehm Digital Drums can perhaps as German Linn drums, since they sound similar, and very high quality. Neben den eigentlichen grossen und programmierbaren Digital Drums gab es 2 Preset-Versionen, die für Alleinunterhalter als kleines Zusatzgerät benutzt werden konnten. Besides the actual big and programmable digital drums were 2 preset versions, the entertainer as a small device could be used. Sie bieten je nach Typ die besten Presets des grossen Bruders mit einigen Variationen. They offer depending on the type presets of the best big brother with a few variations.

Der Sound dieser kleinen Drummachine ist wirklich fett und die Pattern sind solide programmiert. The sound of those little drum machine is really bold and solid patterns are programmed. Die Chip-Architektur ist, typisch für die Zeit, sehr offen und leicht nachvollziehbar. The chip architecture is typical of the time, very open and easy to understand. So sind z.B. For example, die einzelnen Drumsamples in einem Rom-Baustein gespeichert und lassen sich relativ leicht manipulieren, so dass interessante Effekte möglich werden. Each drum samples in a Rom-Baustein stored and can be relatively easy to manipulate, so interesting effects. Bei meinem Exemplar habe ich bisher eine 8 Schalter-Matrix eingebaut, die für schöne Noise-Effekte sorgt. In my copy, I have been an 8 switch matrix built, the fine for noise effects by itself."

Regarding the Hobbytron:
"this is a very rare self-built stylophone by the german Dr. Boehm organ factory. The sound is different to the original stylophone."

My two Bohm Soundlabs..

flickr by JohnnyBusca.

via johnnybusca in the comments of this post:
"I've got two Soundlabs! :) including a book Die Klangwelt des Musiksynthesizers. This book is written by Bernd Enders.. inventor of the Soundlab and this book describes music synthesis with examples with Soundlabs! :) The book also contains patchsheets and pictures of frontpanels which never made it, like schmitt-trigger module, mixers, VLFOs and envelope followers.

The Co-developer Oliver Klegg contacted me and still has the prototype. I really want a picture of that prototype, but the email seems to be dead.

He was also asking me about the Ringmodulator. He was not sure it was working in the first models. I've no problem with them."

Stylophone Demonstrations via Loscha

This one via Loscha

"I was cleaning up yesterday, I found my Stylophone 7" demonstration record. Recorded it as 96k mp3s and slapped it up on a very very basic page. A friend has a stylophone for me, but, I haven't gotten it from him yet. When I do, I'll attempt to make a schematic - because I haven't seen one online.

Jaycar Electronics - an Australian electronics company has a Stylophone-like kit you can built - as does Dick Smith Electronics. None of them are as good as the Dr Bohm Hobbytron. The Dr Bohm isn't the same as a real stylophone, though. A real stylophone has a BJT based oscillator, where as the Dr Bohm (and the Jaycar and DSE kits) are all 555 based.

Rolf Harris was quite famous in Australia, and more so, I think, in the UK. He was from Bassendean - a pretty dreary suburb in Perth (where the sadly defunct Casio featuring band Turnstyle were from). He had a kids TV Show in the 70s. He recently painted the most up to date official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

An inside picture of one here.

My LP recording is here.

The "Vibrato" on a Stylophone actually lengthens one side of the rectangle wave, not both sides, so, it is Vibrato, but, it is also Pulse Width Modulation. My friend Robin Whittle found this out when he hooked his stylophone up to his oscilloscope.

Tech details:
"As pictures clearly tell, the condition is top-notch and would be mint, if it wasn't for a few minor scratches.
