EaganMatrix Programming for Osmose - Programming Gestures

video upload by EaganMatrix Programming

"There's a nice video on the Expressive E site that demonstrates the various Osmose gestures, however most of these need to be programmed into a preset. This video presets some of the main ways (there are others) to create and/or configure the ten Osmose Gestures presented on the Osmose site: Tap (Scaled Z SGs), Press (Z Control), Press & Tap, Pitch (vibrato), Aftertouch (Y Control), Shake (Derivative control), Strum (Stepped Z functions), Pressure Glide (Pressure Portamento), Note Off (Release on Z and other options) and various custom combinations of all of the above.

EaganMatrix Programming for Osmose - Envelopes (Basic Constructions)

video upload by EaganMatrix Programming

"This video address some of the basics on how Osmose (and to a lesser extent Continuum) presets create envelopes (note I've always used 'an-velope pronunciation vs. 'en-velope) to impose Attack, sustain (pseudo decay) and release profiles and also presents a method to create arbitrarily complex envelope shapes using the new note graphing function. A follow up video will look at use cases for how these envelopes are actually used in Osmose System Presets. Note that you can create traditional ADSR shapes with programming but they are not the common use case when creating Osmose preset profiles.

Simple use cases are presented for applying envelopes to SL/SR output amplitude, applying enveloped for filter cutoff shaping and applying them to modulation inputs, though they are used for many other cases like shaping noise, dynamically altering shape generator frequencies, adding delay effects, etc. Those cases will be covered in the follow up video."

Osmose Pressure Response - Unbelievable Sensitivity and Control

video upload by EaganMatrix Programming

"Here's a short little EaganMatrix test experiment that drives home the point that we all should be tweaking the Osmose Sensitivity parameters to best suit our playing style(s) which may change depending on the type of music we are playing. In particular, I show how you can modify Pressure and Aftertouch Sensitivity to allow you to impose a vibrato with (at least to me) reasonable and comfortable pressure without triggering Aftertouch effects that you may not want to incorporate with your vibrato. The range of sensitivity control over pressure on the Osmose is truly amazing (and bend too but did not go into that here)."

EaganMatrix Programming for Osmose using the CVC

video upload by EaganMatrix Programming

"Tested out the CVC connected to Osmose using the Haken Editor and CVC based presets that Expressive E provides in the Utility category. Here's a presentation on the fundamentals of using the CVC both in stand-alone default mode (options selectable in the editor) and programmed through the EaganMatrix.

Note that the Evaton Technologies 'uCVC"' also works if you are primarily interested in monophonic CVC connection (you can chain two together for duophonic operation) but that is not covered here as most will want to maximize using all four CVC channels with Osmose.

Note I also testing downloading Pitch Table Editor (PTE) tunings to the Osmose and they seem to work ok (though the editor is still visually geared for Continuum). So you can explore micro tunings and customer scales including importing Scala files on your modular setup using this connection though I don't go into great detail as PTE is its own video."

EaganMatrix Programming for Osmose - Initial Concepts

video upload by EaganMatrix Programming

"Initial video comparing Haken Continuum to Osmose and showing the basic Osmose specific programming techniques that form the basis for more complex preset construction. No prior EaganMatrix programming experience is required but basic EaganMatrix programming knowledge will help a bit. If this causes any confusion search pout the initial EaganMatrix programming videos here and start watching them as 90% of EaganMatrix programming is identical between Continuum and Osmose. This video stresses the Osmose specific use cases for Pressure (Z) and Aftertouch (Y) and goes into a lot of fundamental discussion as well as only a single Oscillator is used for discussion. But the video touches on most of the top-level programming techniques that you will find in Osmose presets.

The EaganMatrix preset that goes with this video can be found here: https://patchstorage.com/osmose-initi..."

Edmund Egan - An Improvisation - March 1 2023 & An Update on EaganMatrix Modules

An Improvisation - March 1 2023.mov from Edmund Eagan on Vimeo.

An improvisation on my Eurorack system. Utilizing as sound sources the Haken Audio ContinuuMini and the EaganMatrix Module, as well as the mBiraski kalimba. The EaganMatrix module acts as both a sound source, controlled by both the ContinuuMini surface and the Akai keyboard (as an arpeggiator), and as a stereo audio sound processor.

And an update on EaganMatrix modules:

"After many trials and tribulations, orders and cancelled shipments, indefinite delays, etc., we have finally finally received a quantity shipment of Sharc DSP chips. The DSP shortage was THE most major production stumbling block for us. This chip delivery means there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we are actively completing a production run of EaganMatrix modules.

So in the next few months (we can’t say specifically when) we will have EaganMatrix modules in stock, and will be filling our back order commitments as fast as we possibly can. If you have ordered and have been waiting I would like to thank you for your kind patience. When in stock the EaganMatrix module will join the Continuum, ContinuuMini, and CVC as products currently available to purchase."

Haken Continuum/EaganMatrix - Building a Simple Organ Preset

video upload by EaganMatrix Programming

"Here's a simple method for creating an organ preset used in a number of Continuum and Osmose organ system presets. This preset can run on both. The idea is to use the 5 oscillators as configurable stops you can set to partials 1 to 8 (you can set more if you like) and then use a Z formula on SL/SR to adjust max attenuation of that component. One Oscillator is used to bring in subharmonics which adds lower octaves increasing the size of the sound.
Short video so you can pause if the text balloons describing the construction go by to fast (no talking - just example of sound playing in the background that is set to a fixed configuration - on for playing main organ part on Slim Continuum and the other set for a different setting for the orchestra reduction with a bit of license).
The preset is available here if you are interested: https://patchstorage.com/simply-organ..."

Somewhere Over The Rainbow on Solo Continuum

video upload by JOSH MADOFF

"Headphones/Speakers recommended (Super Dynamic Sound)"

"I really wanted to explore what is possible when treating the amazing Haken Contiuum as a solo instrument. The range of dynamics and expression it is capable of is unbelievable.

In this performance, I demonstrate several techniques that are only possible to play on a Continuum. I find it especially inspiring when I find harmonies that normally only work when they are spread across an entire orchestra, yet they work beautifully on the Continuum.

There is no other solo instrument on earth that can achieve many of these sounds!

Headphones or speakers are highly recommended. The dynamics and frequency range of this performance are way too broad and detailed for a cellphone.

This year’s focus will be on every electronic musical instrument that features the Continuum’s internal sound engine, the EaganMatrix. This includes the new Osmose synthesizer from French manufacturer Expressive E, as well as the Continuum Fingerboard, ContinuuMini, and EaganMatrix Module for Eurorack from Haken Audio. As in previous years, the conference extends opportunities for musicians, sound designers, software developers, and music enthusiasts to explore these uniquely expressive instruments through presentations, performances, and hands-on experience.

ContinuuCon 2023 will begin with an evening reception on May 17, just four days after Superbooth ends in Berlin. Over the next two days, Continuum and Osmose experts and master musicians will present lectures and demos at the Palmela Public Library. For tickets, information, and videos of past events, visit the website continuucon.com.

Over decades of collaboration, University of Illinois professor Dr. Lippold Haken and Canadian film and TV composer Edmund Eagan developed the EaganMatrix and the Continuum family of instruments. Both men will be on hand throughout the event, along with their counterparts from Expressive E and other authorities, to share their technical knowledge and musical expertise.

Previous Continuum conferences have been held at IRCAM in Paris and in Asheville, North Carolina. Haken Continuum players include Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi, Brazilian electro-acoustic musician Amon Tobin, film composer A.R. Rahman, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess, and The Who’s Pete Townshend, who said, “I absolutely adore it. The Continuum is already inspiring me to new ideas.”

About Haken Audio’s Instruments
The Continuum Fingerboard is a polyphonic electronic instrument that offers continuous multidimensional performance control by responding to each finger independently. The ContinuuMini is a smaller, more affordable duotactic model based on the same technology. Inside is the EaganMatrix, a user-programmable digital modular synthesizer taking full advantage of the supple playing surface’s myriad performance possibilities.

About Palmela, Portugal
About 25 miles from Lisbon, the city of Palmela features art, nature, heritage, gastronomy, award-winning wines, arts and crafts, and nearby, the beautiful beaches of the Arr谩bida, making it an excellent location for ContinuuCon. With the support of the Palmela City Council, Passos e Compassos is pleased to host ContinuuCon 2023.

And the press release with pics:

"Expressive E is proud to announce Osmose, the new universal standard for musical expressivity. Osmose is a polyphonic synthesizer that unlocks new ways to control sound and features a powerful sound engine created in collaboration with the leading-edge audio company, Haken Audio.

The conclusion of an epic adventure

Three years ago, Expressive E embarked on an ambitious adventure by opening the pre-orders for their standalone synthesizer, Osmose.

Osmose elevates a player始s experience by introducing a new landscape of features for musicians to interact with sound and produce music in new ways. It does this while not only respecting, but also enhancing the player始s existing keyboard skills. Every note can be articulated independently with unique expressive possibilities, such as those seen in this Osmose gesture compilation video: https://youtu.be/AA5xe7k4OrM

To achieve that goal, the Expressive E engineers set out to industrialize a new generation of expressive keybed which is at the core of Osmose始s playing experience. The biggest challenge was to implement all expressiveness-related technologies into the familiar keybed form factor of the piano that musicians have been using for centuries. Creating a new kind of keybed generated many industrial production obstacles and ultimately required a total symbiosis between DSP and hardware to connect all players to Omose始s sound through the use of natural gestures.

Expressive E engineers conducted hundreds of on-field test sessions to fine-tune the complex design of the synthesizer. Artists played a tremendous role in the refinement of Osmose by providing precise feedback about playing sensations and helped shape a new ergonomic tool, relevant for musicians from various music scenes and cultural horizons. Thanks to their support as well as the early adopters and partners, the wait is finally over: Osmose has now started to ship.

First deliveries and re-opening of preorders
Expressive E are thrilled to announce the delivery of the first Osmose units to early adopters of the project. The first products had already been delivered in late 2022 and early backers始 shipments will keep flowing continuously.

Expressive E have thus decided to reopen pre-orders on January 5th 2023 for all musicians interested in purchasing Osmose. The pre-order scheme has been reconducted to allow Expressive E to anticipate demand as efficiently as possible and organize their production schedules accordingly. Despite a tense economical environment driven by inflation, component shortages and the resurgence of epidemics, the company will still commit to guaranteeing a $/€1,799 retail price, within the limits of allocated stocks.

Interested musicians can now pre-order their Osmose on Expressive E始s website or through an affiliated dealer. [see the dealers on the right]

A new kind of synthesizer
From its inception, Osmose was designed as a solution to connect musicians with electronic instruments more intimately while still retaining the sound-design abilities of modern-day and vintage synthesizers.

Backed by a powerful sound engine made in collaboration with pioneering audio company Haken Audio, Osmose offers more than 500 creativity-boosting presets. Each of them was fine-tuned to offer performance and recording-ready macros. Preset curation covers many musical genres including modern pop, urban, film scoring, electronic music, sound design, and traditional instrumental music.
Made to inspire, Osmose offers a playful experience based on familiar features and thus presents a gentle learning curve. It offers the benefits of MPE instruments without the need to relearn the instrument entirely.

From the beginning, Osmose has been a collaborative project with artists from many musical backgrounds. They have been involved in the development of Osmose to make it a musical companion to fit their creative and ergonomic needs. Expressive E celebrates these artist collaborations with the release of a video series recapping the Osmose adventure and the reaction of artists to the new, dynamic, inspiring synthesizer.

Shot in Chennai (India), Paris (France), and Los Angeles (USA), the video series features musicians and producers like Flying Lotus, AR Rahman, Jean-Michel Jarre, Mike Dean, Cory Henry, Andr茅 Manoukian, and Tarik Azzouz. It shows their approach to musical expression, how they interact with Osmose, and how this new synthesizer has influenced the way they play. A trailer for the series is now available on YouTube.

During Q1 and Q2 2023 Expressive E will regularly release clips focusing on each individual artist from the main trailer video. The first three episodes of the series are now available on YouTube. They feature musical icon A.R. Rahman (Grammy winner and film scorer for 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire), jazz virtuoso J3PO (a prolific solo artist and keyboardist for Marcus Miller), and trap beatmaker veteran Tarik Azzouz (a Grammy winner who has worked with Jay-Z, DJ Khaled, 2 Chainz, and many more)."
