The Rock Drill 4069

Published on Apr 6, 2016 alphabetadragon

"The Rock Drill 4069 is the new synth kit from lushprojects.com. This beginner-friendly kit is touch controlled and makes some of the meanest sounds around. PS - sorry about the clicks - these are some problems with my recorder and aren't true to the real sound."

via this auction

"The Rock Drill 4069 is a touch-driven synthesizer with a unique look and a mean sound. The deceptively simple circuit creates an amazing range of organic sounds in response to the connection between the performer and the touch pads. The project involves no microcontrollers and relies entirely on classical electronics being pushed in to interesting distorted operation for its effects. The sounds produced are a mixture of the expected and controllable and the totally unexpected as the system tips in to chaos. The sound is always raw and menacing.

Inspired by designs like the Electronic Dream Plant Wasp synth the Rock Drill 4069 uses a standard logic chip from the 1980s in a very original and unconventional way. Technically the circuit consists of two interacting oscillators, one audio frequency and one low frequency, driving an distorting amplifier. The touch pads make the player's body part of the circuit and provide many levels of feedback and connection between control voltages and signals in the system. The Rock Drill 4069 is powered by a 3 Volt coin cell and is completely safe in operation."

"A nice little mini modular with a good selection of features -
2 DCOs each with 5 waveforms and a CV input. One useable as an LFO
2 ADSRs
1 LPF with 1 input and 2 CV inputs
2 Square+Triangle LFOs
1 Gateable square LFO
2 VCAs
2 Ring Mods
4 RCA Breakouts and 1 MiniJack breakout
1 Joystick controller with button out
1 noise source
1 sample and hold
4 imput signal mixer
Midi in

I think that's about it...

It's quite a fun piece of kit - good fun to use with a eurorack modular, or just freerunning on its own.
Here's a quick play around from today with it patched to itself doing some some fake stereo panning using the two VCAs and LFOs. The only external effect was a little bit of reverb [embedded above] - For some reason the ADSR knobs work in reverse - no idea why. But it's like that on both for some reason.

Powered by a 12v wall-wart type power supply which I'm including, and about 30 mini-banana patch cables and all topped off with a bunch of 1900 type knobs.."

LushOne Modular Synth Experiment - Cars by Gary Numan

"Experimental multitracking - using Python, MIDI files are separated in to mono voices suitable for playing on a modular synth. These are then multitracked to create songs. For this demo I have used Cars by Gary Numan. All sounds are from a LushOne modular synth with Base, Contour and Inca modules.

This is the first cut, so very rough."

New Sponsor Shout Out! - LushProjects

Please welcome LushProjects.com as a new sponsor of MATRIXSYNTH!  You'll find their banner on the right. The LushProjects.com store carries a wonderful range of original synthesizer kits as well as kits from other independent designers. LushProjects is based in Nottingham England, and outside the site has information on a cornucopia of creative technology projects including one-off arcade machines and video circuit bending.

For audio enthusiasts, LushProjects has spent the last three years developing the compact and low-cost LushOne modular synthesizer system. The LushOne is an excellent system for people wanting to delve into the modular world and includes extensive documentation and videos demonstrating how to go from generating simple sounds to combining multiple modules in complicated patches to create sophisticated effects.

LushProjects.com also has a range of kits suitable for beginners to electronics construction. They run workshops to introduce DIY electronics to people coming from creative backgrounds in music and the arts.

If you like quirky applications of technology or unusual synth kits then a visit to the LushProjects site is heartily recommended.

LushOne Custom Modular Systems & Updates

Updates via LushOne

"- There is a new Echo module for the LushOne modular system. [previously captured here]

- There is also some new general information about the LushOne and some example projects built using it:
(here and here) [Azymbol from Belgium & Treasure Chest Synth pictured]

- Lastly, but probably mostly of interest to people in the UK and EU because it saves them importing from the US, we now stock a range of Bleep Labs and Rare Waves audio kits:

New LushOne Echo Module

via Lushprojects.com where you'll find some audio demos.

"The LushOne Echo module provides highly flexible delay and echo effects. All key parameters can be set manually or manipulated using a control voltage. With the LushOne echo you can simulate room echoes or create space-age effects. The LushOne Echo also contains an envelope generator which produces a control voltage based on the amplitude of the input signal.

The LushOne Echo kit continues the design principles of the LushOne base. A single board design is used to keep costs low. The LushOne echo uses the popular PT2399 digital delay chip with supporting analogue circuits. The PT2399 is a really fun chip. At long delays it gets noisy and creates a lo-fi roughness to the sound. At medium and short delays it has a nice, natural quality. The ability to vary the delay on-the-fly and with a control voltage allows it to create space-age swoops and zaps as well as more normal static delay effects.

The LushOne Echo can be added to any level of the LushOne system. It can be used with just the LushOne Base or integrated in to a bigger system. The audio sample below shows how even with just the LushOne Base and LushOne Echo you can create some amazing sounds.

The LushOne Echo provides:
Echo effect
Add echo effects to any input signal
Adjustable input sensitivity level
Adjustable level of original input in the output
Adjustable level of echo in the output with voltage control
Adjustable level of feedback in the echo circuit with voltage control
Adjustable delay with voltage control
Exponential response on delay control for ease of use
Internal or external feedback switch which allows extra processing functions to be inserted in the feedback loop using the Send/Return connections
Power-on protection circuit so that the PT2399 chip can be run at its shortest possible delay without damage
Envelope generator
Create control voltage based on amplitude of input signal
Allows effects to respond to volume level of a sound
Single board design including all controls and connectors (except power-in) providing straightforward construction and neat presentation. A laser cut case is available that contains the LushOne base and the Inca or it can easily be housed in a project box.
Open-source access to schematics

The LushOne Echo is straightforward to build but it does have quite a high component count. It is recommended that you have some experience in building electronics before starting on this kit."
