Note this is the last video I have for the event. There's never enough time!!! :) It was an awesome event. If you can ever make it to any synth event and aren't sure about it, just go. You'll see gear and meet people you wouldn't have otherwise.

See the MMTA SYNTHFEST 2013 Channel below for all posts on the event.

New MMTA SYNTHFEST Black & White Pics via Computer Controlled

New pics added to this set. They start after the LX4 pic. There are some great shots in the complete set. Don't miss them!

Pictured here is the Syntar from George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular. The Syntar was the first portable "keytar" style synthesizer.  It's interesting when you thing about it.  The name could have been Syntar which is a mix of Synth and Guitar.  Instead keytar stuck through the years.  The Moog Liberation followed the Syntar and became the first mass produced all in one portable synthesizer.  See the Syntar channel for more.

My set. :) I did a bit more hanging out with people which was extremely nice this time around. I'm not the best photographer, but hopefully these will give you a sense of what was there. I had an absolutely great time this year. Huge thanks to everyone that could make it, a big thanks to the MMTA members that made this happen and of course a huge thanks for Shoreline Community College hosting yet again!

mattson mini modular filter pings

"this simple patch looks like FM and sounds like ring modulation, but if i recall is mostly noise through a nearly self-oscillating filter whose frequency is set by a sample and hold module."

Cowboy and the Vocoder by Redmartian

The track is now available here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/redmartian9

"The song was recording using the MMM for bass and vocoder carrier. The lead is a jupiter-6 and the drums were done using a Sequential DrumTraks. The lead and vocoder (Roland SVC-350) parts were played manually along with the bass/drums which were sequenced using midi via Logic."

Some of you might remember Cowboy and the Vocoder from these previous posts.  The story behind this track has a somewhat intersting and quirky history.  Cowboy was VoiceEncoder's dog.  VoiceEncoder is known for his vocoder videos and demos that became somewhat of an obscure synth meme.  His demos actually came up in a recent conversation I had with someone.  VoiceEncoder would often feature his dog Cowboy in his videos.  Cowboy would just be lying on a bed somewhere while VoiceEncoder talked to him through a vocoder.  Sadly Cowboy passed away on Monday, March 23, 2009 (click through for a tribute post).

The second half of what makes this track special is that it is one of the first tracks predominantly featuring the Mattson Mini Modular (it might actually be the first) [Update: according to Redmartian, "it was the first 'song' on the MMM. I did a few musical demos and orchestrated lute pieces, but this was the first 'pop song'."] It was composed by Redmartian as a tribute to Cowboy.  The lyrics are a dedication to Cowboy and the videos he was featured in.  Below are two videos for the track.  The bottom video was taken at the 2009 PNW Synth Gathering and features the Performance Music Systems Syntar in place of the Jupiter-6 for leads.   The Syntar was the first fully contained keytar synthesizer created by George Mattson, the man behind Mattson Mini Modular.

Cowboy and the Vocoder and the MMM

Uploaded on Nov 5, 2008 redmartian·73 videos

"A song written for a dog who likes to listen to the sound the Roland SVC-350 vocoder. This song features the MMM as well as a Sequential Circuits Drum Traks and a Roland Jupiter-6. (I don't have a Poly-800 .. sorry cowboy).

Here are the lyrics:

Do you know Cowboy
and the SVC-350?
Do you know Cowboy
and the Roland Vocoder?

Hey there Cowboy
I see you there
Lazy gazing
Gazing lazy
Whos my sweet boy?
You know its you.
I like to vocode and you do too.

No Poly-800 to drive the SVC
So I use an MMM as my carrier wave
No Poly-800 but Cowboy doesn't mind.
We all know its the Roland SVC-350 vocoder time.

Audio version can be found here:

Don't hate the dog or the vocoder."

MMTA FALL SYNTHFEST Coming to Seattle on October 26!

Update: It was an awesome event as always! You'll find pics and videos of the event as they go up on the MMTA SYNTHFEST 2013 channel.  Some are already up and mine are yet to follow.  New posts of course will go up on the front page.  You can get to the channel via the link at the bottom of each post.  Note there was an earlier event this year so this post will mark the bottom of the last event.  Posts beneath that are from the prior event.

Heads up everyone! The MMTA SYNTHFEST is currently scheduled at Shoreline Community College in the Music Building (800) Saturday, October 26.  The event is Free!  Full details will follow in future posts. Until then mark your calendar and make arrangements as needed. This is not an event you will want to miss!

This year's previous Spring SYNTHFEST included the Synth Petting Zoo for people to check out and play with gear, a Tradeshow Room with local vendors & manufactures, a Presentation Room with lectures & performances, and a Jam Session room.  Last year we had a rare look into the history of Yamaha from Dave Bristow.  Mark Vail, author of Vintage Synthesizers, along with John Bowen and the Solaris, were also in attendance. For a full list of manufactures from that event, see this post.

Mattson SQ16 Euro Sequencer Take 2

Published on May 2, 2013

"3 Oscillators tuned slightly apart, all gate and pulse width triggered by the Mattson and a 4MS Pingable Envelope Generator w/ a TipTop BD909. The main toggle in the dark (sorry) was simply with the Gain of the Amp from all that CV Gate in at nearly every 1V per octave"

Mattson SQ816 Take Live

Published on May 13, 2013

"Everything here is live as it evolves. Using a patch pictured on my Facebook page, I used the Mattson as "the brain". MIDI out is running all channels in Ableton, as a CV, sequencer, groove machine, and performance model using no clips or loops in Live. Three drum kits and two Oscillators are all being triggered by the Mattson SQ816. Next time, I would at least add a live Moog bass line with at least some quarter notes in there. This is second time that I tried this."

New Mattson VCA Module with Amplitude and Ring Modulation in the Works

Mouse over the little icons in the player for notes as the demo progresses.

"Demo of my new VCA module design that allows for manual and CV control of the balanced modulator allowing for VC morphing from no modulation through Amplitude Modulation through Ring Modulation."

via Mattson Mini Modular on Facebook

"Just finished breadboarding a new VCA module. This allows for Voltage control of morphing the modulation from no modulation through Amplitude Modulation through Ring Modulation with a 0-5V CV.

Pretty awesome stuff!

Here's a pic of the lovely breadboard...

Division 6 will be manufacturing this module in the Euro format soon.

I'll be manufacturing it in the MMM format as well."

June Noodle 2012 on the Monster Mattson EML Modular System

"A bunch of people visited me one day in June 2012 and I had this patch set up. So, I played it for them.

It utilized my EML modular, two Mattson/ Division 6 SQ816 sequencers, and Alesis QS8 and an Alesis SR-16.

They wanted me to mix it and upload the recording I had made of it the night before. It took a while. But, here it is."

I was there.  :)

mattson mini modular, bass drum driven clock

Published on Apr 14, 2013 hewstigator·29 videos

"thought it might be novel to use a bass drum to send clock pulses to the sq-816. unfortunately, this bit of insight was not accompanied by any great ideas as to what kind of sequence, or drum beat would really make this more compelling, sigh! anyhow, this is a short clip of the setup in action.
