"This Macbeth X-Series Micromac D synth is in excellent cosmetic condition, and it works as it should, no functionality issues. Made in the UK. As you may know, this is a rare synth, out of production, and hard to come by. Built like a tank. Solid enclosure and solid controls."

White MacBeth M5N Analog Semi-Modular Synthesizer

"This is the largest, heaviest, and most impressive synthesizer I had in the studio. It is made in a rugged steel case and although it's appearance is like an Arp 2600, it sounds nothing like it. This is the prize of the MacBeth offerings, and was limited to only around 50 made in white, and perhaps 50 in black. This one has no serial number, as it was made as a demo unit back in the early 2000's."

"Ken Macbeth hand-built around 100 of these before production stopped. Beautifully laid out with acres of room to get in and really play the instrument. Had plenty of ARP influence in the looks but it is no 2600 (or anything else) clone. Described as “big and brash” by Ken himself, more than one review says it can take you into classic big bottom Moog territory if that’s where you want to go.

All sockets are normalised – so no need to start plugging in cables if you just want to dive in and make some noise."

The pair of excellent filters are worth a mention though: there’s a 24 dB/oct lowpass ladder filter and a 12 dB/oct with Low Pass, Band Pass, High Pass and Notch options.

This is a modern but militantly analogue affair; you won’t find such luxuries as patch memory, MIDI or (heaven forfend!) USB here. But of course there is CV control and the front panel is raised up a few inches ready for you to put a keyboard in front of it."

Macbeth M5 meets Telecaster

Tom Noise

"A long improvisation with the Macbeth M5 and a Fender Telecaster (directly plugged into the M5). No external Amp. I am not a great guitar player btw... ;-)

The Macbeth M5 was generating the pulsating bass while the external input of the unit was used for the Telecaster. The Delay is a Korg FX Pedal. Spring Reverb from the M5."

"A masterpiece by Scottish synth designer genius Ken Macbeth, this is Ken’s take on the classic Minimoog Model D concept of a 3-VCO synth with a 24db ladder filter.

Ken Macbeth is - besides Wowa Cwejman - the best boutique analog synth builder of our time, doing everything the old-school way of through-hole solering. This is true analog!

The sound that his synths deliver is simply out of this world and the Micromac D is no exception. Despite its desktop size it packs a heavy punch. Seriously - in terms of sound this is as good as it gets.

Macbeth Studio Systems M3X SN 0071

via this auction

"Rare, hand-built 3 VCO synth. Superb build quality, simple to use and with a huge sound. Midi or analogue control.

This unit needs some work before it ships (replacement of the transformer). Lead time will depend on the queue of work we have, but is likely to be around 20 working days.

Macbeth M3X monosynth for sale. One of around 100 units made by Scottish synth expert Ken Macbeth back in the early 2000s. Will be supplied serviced, in full working order and with warranty.

Clearly inspired by the Minimoog (although it is in part based on the Prodigy) these have a well-deserved reputation for a big, ballsy, “vintage” analogue sound. The 24dB/oct transistor ladder filter is a big part of this.

This one has been fitted in a case for desktop use. It could be rack mounted (but the limitation is that all the sockets are on the rear of the unit).

The original transformer had burnt out so we will fit a new one which will be set either up for 120 or 240v use.

CONDITION: In excellent overall condition with only minor wear to the face. The wooden case is clean with some scuffs and dings around the edges. Please see photos or get in touch if you require more information on condition.

Will be set up for either 120 or 240v operation before shipping."

"Macbeth X-Series Micromac D with additional patchpoints & aluminium flight case

3 oscillator semi-modular synth, complex modulation capabilities, MIDI & CV control.
! ! ! >>> Unique: Comes with 4 additional CV outs, accessible via the built in MIDI interface (MIDI to CV, to control synth parameters or external modules) – installed by Ken Macbeth.

Fully functional. Panel: Very good cosmetic condition. Light signs of wear. Has been taped on one side and is a bit sticky at that spot (can probably be cleaned). Otherwise fine. Comes with switchable PSU."

MacBeth M5 Sound Design: 3rd edition Patch Book

wedream2

"After programming the Korg Arp 2600 FS for several months, I put together a 50-page patch book of new sounds for the Arp. I translated many of those sounds to the M5 and expanded the M5 patch book to 70 patch diagrams. Here is a sampling of sounds from 3rd Edition M5/M5N Owner's Manual and Patch Book."

Superbooth 20HE: At Home With Ken MacBeth

Published on Apr 26, 2020 sonicstate

"Ken Mcbeth is always a regular feature at Superbooth, in fact for the past 3 years Ken has actually performed at the show. In this impromptu interview we took the time to catch up with Ken and see what he has been working on before the lockdown and discuss what life is like on lockdown for a synth designer.

Unfortunately as this was an impromptu interview on a Sunday morning recorded from home, Nick’s mic was recorded on his ear buds microphone so as a consequence the audio was not quite up to our usual caliber. However we still felt that this was worth the upload."

X-Series MKII Dual Oscillator Module

Priced at $1499

Fully analog double oscillator with integrated ring modulator based on the MC1496 chip which appears in many vintage synth designs from the 1970's. Cross modulation, linear FM, are all on board. A lot of VCO and a lot of knob on 42HP. Together with the Macbeth backend filter, the combination provides a full and high-quality complex voice.

New features to the predecessor:

-transistor pairs are more closely matched in this version. This provides increased tuning stability and allows better tracking.

-Precise multi-turn potentiometers provide additional signal stability and simplify the calibration of the oscillators

-use of very high quality parts in the entire signal path. Significant improvement in the choice of capacitors.

-The output section of the oscillators has changed significantly and now each oscillator is joined by two sub-oscillator outputs. The change is as follows:
MKI: SAW / RAMP / SQU / RECT / TRI / SINE
MKII: SAW / RECT / TRI / SINE and now also SUB-OCTAVE ONE / SUB-OCTAVE TWO (you can expect a massive sound here)

-The 10-turn potentiometers have been retained and make fine-tune controls obsolete

-The noise generator now contains a double potentiometer and a summing amplifier/mixer circuit for the white and pink output.

-The ring modulator remains the same and is based on the balanced modulator IC MC1496.
-In addition to the 16-pin Doepfer standard bus connector for the power supply, the rarely used CV bus is now also used

-The jack sockets have been revised. On the original X-Series, Ken Macbeth had used the same type of 'box jack' that many others use. Ken began to question the reliability of this type of plug - and now with the MK2 versions about to be launched, he felt it was important to upgrade the jacks to a higher quality type. As far as plugging is concerned, they will have a much longer life, which in turn will increase reliability".
