"At NAMM 2024, we hooked up with Suit and Tie Guy, who introduced us to the Vanilla Synthesizer, a departure from the Eurorack modular format toward a more East Coast leaning complete instrument. Suit And Tie Guy describing it as a walnut-cabinet beauty packed with 70s goodness in American format, says the Vanilla Synthesizer promises a unique blend of vintage aesthetics and cutting-edge functionality. Boasting solid gold artwork, it features two LFOs, two VCOs, one filter, two envelope generators, two VCAs, and a mixer. Suit and Tie Guy showcased the control distributor, a device that minimizes patching by efficiently distributing CV and gate inputs to various components of the synthesizer with cable-free operation, though patching is available in the style of iconic synths like the ARP 2600. While not a limited edition, it has limited availability due to its meticulous construction process, and that each one is built to order.

NAMM 2024 - Groove Synthesis - 3rd Wave Desktop

"At NAMM 2024, we met with Kurt from Groove Synthesis to explore the latest offering from the company, the Third Wave Desktop, featuring the new 1.7 operating system update. This update brings significant enhancements to the synth, including an improved virtual analog waveform oscillator and the incorporation of sequential Prophet VS wavetables. A major addition is MPE support and Kurt showed us the modulation routings for MPE parameters, allowing users to leverage Y-axis control and polyphonic aftertouch, bringing expressive capabilities to the forefront.

Kurt also demonstrated the more gnarly side of the 3rd Wave by disabling interpolation and navigating through individual parts of the wave for glitchy effects. The synth is not limited to virtual analog sounds; it offers FM modulation with 3-operator FM capabilities, providing users with a diverse sonic palette.

"At NAMM 2024, Sonic State had the opportunity to catch up with Matt at the Nord booth, where he presented the latest iteration of the Nord Grand, aptly named the Nord Grand 2. With four years since the release of the original Nord Grand, the Grand 2 boasts exciting updates that elevate the playing experience. The standout enhancement is the incorporation of a new generation of Kawai premium hammer action keybed, now featuring a triple sensor for heightened responsiveness. The layout of the Grand 2 is reminiscent of the Nord Stage 4, offering two independent layers with LED faders for both the piano and sample sections, allowing musicians to effortlessly layer up to four elements simultaneously. Matt delves into the details of the new dynamic compression in the piano section, designed to reduce the dynamic range without sacrificing the nuances of the piano sound. Additionally, he introduces the added unison feature to enhance EP sounds. The effects section sees significant improvements, now allowing independent effects for each layer, providing musicians with greater flexibility in sound shaping. NAMM 2024 - Morphor - Plectrum

"Sonic State caught up with Eli from Morphor Radical Acoustics at NAMM 2024 to delve into their intriguing range of Bucket Brigade Delay (BBD) modules. Eli introduces the Plectrum, Morphor's second version of the AP1, highlighting its fully analog design using a 124-stage Bucket Brigade Delay chip. The new version features CV-controlled feedback, allowing users to manipulate the length of the notes even up to self-oscillation, providing a wide range of sounds from subtle to extreme.

Continuing to use BBD modules, Morphor have created an Ensemble with eight-voices in stereo that serve as a powerful chorus on steroids. Eli also unveils three new essential modules, including a VCO, a VCA with an inverted ADSR envelope, and a versatile LFO all available soon.

"Bitwig Studio has unveiled its latest update, Bitwig Studio 5.1, at NAMM 2024. The update focuses on sound design tools and introduces 10 new characters to enhance users' creative processes. Fredrik introduced one of the key highlights: the modular sound design environment, Grid, which now includes three new character filters—Fizz, Rasp, and Ripple. These filters have undergone extensive development and offer a wide range of sonic possibilities. Additionally, Bitwig Studio 5.1 introduces the Byte oscillator, a digital dual oscillator with various sync and XFM options.

The update also includes six new wave shapers and two new audio effects devices: Filter Plus and Sweep. Filter Plus is a simplified version of Grid, providing easy access to filters and wave shapers in an audio effects environment. Sweep, on the other hand, offers more routing and modulation possibilities with its two filter slots and wave shaper. Bitwig Studio 5.1 also brings improvements to audio editing, such as audio quantizing, making it easier to align audio clips to the grid. GUI updates have been implemented, particularly in the mixer mode, allowing tracks to be displayed in a more customizable manner.

"At NAMM 2024, Sonic State had the opportunity to interview Kevin from FL Studio about the new Kepler synthesizer. Inspired by the Juno-6, Kepler offers a range of features including the famous arpeggio section, LFO, DCOs with sub-oscillator and sub-noise, filters with high-pass and VCF, VCA, envelope, and chorus. One notable highlight is the vintage chorus, which has been so well-replicated that it has become a standalone plugin. Users have control over different modes, time delays, feedback, high-pass position, start phase, left-right phase relationship, modulation type, tempo syncing, noise, and noise gate. Kepler is included in the producer edition of FL Studio and is also available for download as a demo."

"At NAMM 2024, we hooked up with Ian from Melbourne Instruments who introduced us to some updates recently bestowed upon on their synthesizer, Nina. Ian told us that they have added some fun features to the firmware, including scopes that display waveforms and an XY mode for visualizing stereo phase alignment. The biggest update, however, is the ability to modulate the morph between two sounds using the modulation matrix. Each of the 12 voices on the Nina can now individually control the morph through the modulation matrix, allowing for evolving and breathing sounds as you play.

Feedback for the Nina has been positive, with increasing popularity and favorable reviews. Melbourne Instruments has been listening to customer feedback and plans to release regular firmware updates, incorporating requested features.

NAMM 2024 - Yamaha - Seqtrak

"At NAMM 2024, Sonic State got an in-depth look at Yamaha's latest offering, the Seqtrak. Jun at the Yamaha booth told us Seqtrak is an 11-track groovebox designed for both production and performance. Jun showcased its features, emphasizing its all-in-one capabilities, including a rechargeable battery, a built-in speaker, and a microphone for sampling. The hardware's user interface is neatly divided into three sections for drums, synths and samplers, and sound design and effects.

The drum section has seven tracks with a step sequencer for easy pattern creation. The synth section offers two AW-2 sample-based synthesizers and a dedicated FM track. The sampler track allows users to utilize the built-in microphone, audio input, USB input, or resampling for versatile sound creation, and finally there is an effects section. The Seqtrak also comes with an accompaniment app featuring a dual editor, project sound manager, dynamic tutorial, and visualizer.
