Octave-Plateau Voyetra Eight

"This listing is for a vintage Rev 4 Octave Plateau Voyetra Eight. Rev 4 is the most desirable and final revision that allows for a number of extra midi functions, most importantly aftertouch, pitch bending and modulation assignment. Rev 4 green boards are also robust and supposed to have more long-term reliability."

NOS 1982 Octave Voyetra One Mylar Front Panel

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Note, this appears to be the first mention of the Voyetra One on the site.

"This mylar front panel was made in 1982 by Octave-Plateau for their Voyetra One synthesizer that was never manufactured. This is a rare collector's item for any fan of the Voyetra Eight synthesizer and would look great framed and displayed on the wall of a studio. The layout clearly shows the complex voice architecture of the Voyetra Eight, which is not obvious from looking at the Voyetra Eight front panel.

This item is New Old Stock (NOS) and is covered with a protective film as shipped from the factory. The back has an adhesive covered with a paper protector and the manufacturer's sticker shows it was made on March 22, 1982.

The Voyetra One was originally intended to be a programmer for the Voyetra Eight but it was abandoned when Octave-Plateau decided instead to make a software voice editor for the IBM PC. For more information on the Voyetra One and Voyetra Eight, Google 'Fandom Voyetra Eight Synthesizer'."

Octave-Plateau Voyetra 8 Synthesizer System

via this auction

"Here we have the Voyetra 8 synthesizer. A synthesizer so rare and hard to find that you can only dream about it. This one blows away all other synthesizers with its fat 8 voice polyphony, so we don’t have to explain why this Voyetra 8 has become one of the most sought after and best sounding synthesizers ever! Maybe this is the last time you will see this particular one, but who knows another one will appear? Maybe in 100 years or never? Don’t miss out on this one! We can guarantee that this is the most complete Voyetra package, it has the sturdy circuit boards inside, the IBM software, the VPK-5 keyboard, the IBM 5150 computer, special hard-to-find connector cables, and a whole lot more! The key jacks have also been redesigned to make it play like a dream. We dare you to find a more complete Voyetra package than this."

"Up for sale a super rare and awesome Octave Plateau - Voyetra 8. There were only a few hundred of these made and you almost never see these for sale!
Selling as is.
Known Issues are: Audio outputs do not pass signal although the headphone out does work correctly. Unison L is not working but Unison R is working.
Other than that there are some scratchy switches & pots from age which are to be expected. I contacted one of the original guys from Octave Plateau and he stated " the Voyetra serial is one of the last batch manufactured so is probably a Rev4" The Rev4 is the most desirable version works with MIDI librarians like MIDI Quest Pro and has advanced SysEx. Earlier versions have a much more limited UI.
Midi In cable included. (XLR Male to Midi) See shop description."

EMEAPP SONIC TEST DRIVE: OCTAVE CAT/KITTEN PLUS CAT STICK Feat. DON SLEPIAN

video upload by EMEAPP

"We are huge fans of Octave's 'feline' series of synthesizers here at EMEAPP. In fact, we have three Cats and a Kitten in our collection. But seriously, the Octave Cat, Kitten and the rare Cat Stick controller are definitely favorites around here for their flexibility and sonic punch. Hosted by electronic music pioneer DON SLEPIAN, he will take you on a guided tour of these two sibling synths as well as an overview of one of the most flexible control modules ever made."

"This one is new and has never been used. I bought some of these about 10 years ago from the guy who designed them and this is one of two left. These are rare and seldom come up. It comes in the original box and original paper back manual. There is "Turtle Beach" tape on the box (Octave Plateau later became Turtle Beach). As you may know, this unit has two LFOs and 4four VCAs. It works great with modular synthesizers. Please mail with any questions. Shipping to most countries."

Custom Patch Demos - Octave, Novation, Korg, Yamaha, Roland, Ensoniq, & Oberheim Vintage Synths

video uploads by soitgoesmusic

Playlist:

The Cat by Octave (1976 Non-SRM) Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the vintage Octave Cat synthesizer. This is the original Non-SRM one from 1976. It's one fat sounding synth.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- amazing vintage analog sound
- it feels alive with electricity and has lots of subtle variations in the textures of the sound
- independent faders for each wave form means that 8 sounds can be playing at once (4 on VCO 1, 3 on VCO 2, and noise), creating huge sounds

Cons:
- no midi
- needs to be tuned on each use
- needs lots of maintenance (i.e., regular calibration)
- can't save patches and rarely sounds exactly the same twice
Novation Drumstation - Custom Kits Demo
A demo of the OG 808 and 909 emulator: the Novation Drumstation. This is the version 2. Wanted to show the versatility of the machine.

Kits programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the drum machine.

Pros:

- well emulated 808 and 909 sounds in a small 1U rack unit
- adds tuning to some drums that originals don't have
- built in distortion and front cut

Cons:

- no on-board sequencer
- no power switch
Korg MS-20 (Vintage) Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the original Korg MS-20. This is a wild synth that can take you to some unexpected places.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- amazing vintage analog sound
- patch bay provides so many unique configurations
- the resonant high pass filter can make huge bass
- has quirks that make it sound and behave like no other (e.g., the unusual sustain on EG2, the hold time on EG2, the External Signal Processor, etc.)

Cons:
- no midi
- can't save patches (though taking pictures can help)
Yamaha RX5 drum machine - Custom Kits Demo
A demo of the under-rated Yamaha RX5 drum machine. Wanted to show how strange and sci-fi this machine can sound.

Kits programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the drum machine. Each section is made from four drum sounds. Only the stock sounds from the unit were used. No cartridges or external sounds added.

Pros:

- amazing voice editing features
- gritty lo-fi sound
- volume slider and individual out for each drum pair

Cons:

- no velocity
- interface is needlessly complex
Roland Juno-106 Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the legendary Roland Juno-106. Trying to show off the analog warmth of this synth.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth (including the scratchiness of the chorus). Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- amazing analog sound
- hands-on control over all parameters
- wide sweet spot

Cons:
- no velocity
- needs to warm up to sound its best
Korg MS2000 BR Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the Korg MS2000BR. Wanted to show some of this synth's unique features, such as the modulation sequencer (1:03, 2:34, and 5:00) and the vocoder (1:26).

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- lots of hands on control
- modulation sequencer

Cons:
- polyphony is only 4
Ensoniq ESQ-1 Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the Ensoniq ESQ-1. Trying to show some of the versatility of this digital/analog hybrid synth.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- very easy to program for a digital interface
- the keyboard has a great feel

Cons:
- no real-time parameter changes, except through mod wheel
Yamaha TX81Z Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the Yamaha TX81Z. Trying to show what this synth can do beyond the dated presets.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- editing the parameters can yield surprising results
- efficient with cost and space

Cons:
- tedious to program
Oberheim Matrix-6R Custom Patch Demo
A demo of the Oberheim Matrix-6R.

Patches programmed and played by so.it.goes. No effects added. What you hear is direct from the synth. Each part is from one patch only. There is no multi-tracking on any part.

Pros:
- a deep synth with lots of editable parameters, many of which can be controlled through the modulation matrix
- great analog sound

Cons:
- tedious to program, can be helpful to have the parameter list in front of you

Octave Cat SRM

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Octave released this analog classic - the Cat - during the era of the Minimoog and ARP Odyssey synthesizers. The Cat is actually very much like the ARP Odyssey, so much so that ARP had sued them in the late 1970's for cloning their designs. The Cat is a monophonic/duophonic analog synthesizer with 2 oscillators capable of square and sawtooth waveforms. VCO 1 also has a triangle waveform. Each of the waveforms can be played simultaneously and mixed together and there are additional sub-octave oscillators on each oscillator to blend new and interesting sounds."

Octave CAT Stick

video upload by Hanz Volt

[Note: another YT video not displaying the thumbnail. Not sure why this is happening. Just hit the play button.]

"The CAT Stick is a super rare synthesizer controller. With so many connections it’s just mad 🤯. Cool thing is that you can control multiple synths simultaneously with the touch of the joystick….so all you need are some cv parameters to manipulate and the CAT will turn any synth into madness. 4 VCAs and 2 LFOs 💪🏼 XY axis control from the 🕹"

Pre-SRM Octave Cat: Stacking Into 4 Note Chords (5 Different Patches)

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"Overdubbing one note at a time takes over 4 times as long, but it creates a unique tone with 4 times as many options for processing, and the ability to either reduce or exaggerate waveform cancellation of poly synth sounds. Some poly synths have separate outputs per voice, but this more tedious method has more impact- at least in my own playing."

The Octave CAT synthesizer: a detailed demo and tutorial

video upload by CatSynth TV

"We present a detailed look at the infamous Octave CAT synthesizer. Released in the mid-1970s, it was similar in many ways to the Arp Odyssey and Minimoog, but had several unique features such as blending waveforms, sub octaves, and cross modulation. These give it a unique sound that ranges from powerful analog synth bass to wild combinations of frequency modulation. And of course, it is called "CAT" so we have to review it. This is the way.

Octave Plateau Voyetra Eight 8 Voice Polyphonic Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Octave Plateau Voyetra Eight Rev 4. Rev 4 - the final revision which includes all of the available MIDI interfacing.

video in the listing previously featured here.

Technically, this Voyetra Eight is fully functional and future-proofed. Under previous ownership, it was serviced at The Analog Lab (designers of Voyetra Eight) about 10 years ago. Upon acquisition, just to be on the safest side, we again had it serviced to assure another 40+ years of flawless performance with full diagnostics, fresh power supply capacitors, a new battery, matching genuine CEM and SSM chip throughout, all cards inspected, and full calibration. It will include 2 custom high quality XLR to MIDI 5 Pin-Din cables for in and out interfacing.

Cosmetically, as you can see it is in fantastic condition. Yes, there are some noticeable but minor blemishes on the chassis from installing the unit into different racks over the years. A modest 9/10 rating on cosmetics.

We don’t have track note on where exactly it was used within specific songs or sessions. Still, we can confirm this Voyetra Eight was used on upward of 100 releases and in some capacity on the following highlighted releases:

Africa Bambaataa - Beware (The Funk is Everywhere)
Africa Bambaataa - Planet Rock: The Album
Ministry - Twitch
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
Nine Inch Nails - Sin EP
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole EP
Depeche Mode - Ultra"

Custom Octave Plateau Cat Synthesizer w/ Chicken Knobs Minus Keys

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This instrument began its life as an early model Octave Plateau Cat synth, model 1853. At some point it was heavily modified. The keyboard was removed. A “Gate Delay” circuit was added (it does not work at this time). A “Ring Modulator” was added — this seems to work with internal sound sources and has external connections as well. It actually sounds nice, IMO. Other connections were added to the rear panel, and existing connections were modified.

Does it work? It can usually make sounds and I have used it over the years, but it is quirky and in dire need of serious attention by a qualified tech. When it does work it has a great analog tone, and the Sub range on the oscillators adds some real depth. The filter has a nice tone to it. The slide switch that selects octaves needs to be replaced.

The original bottom panel is gone, replaced by pieces of Masonite held in place by gaffer’s tape. An LED has been added to the LFO (pretty helpful).

A unique and vintage instrument with an interesting history. Could be semi-restored or further customized."
