Doctor Mix & Anthony Check Out the PWM Mantis Synth | NAMM 2024

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"Join me and my good buddy Doctor Mix as we explore one of the most talked about synthesizers at NAMM 2024. It won't be difficult to discover how much fun we're having checking it out for the first time. I can see that there is still a lot to unpack about this synth and I'm looking forward to doing just that. Please stay on the lookout and tune in to AMM for a much more in-depth look at this super fun and great sounding instrument. It's part of a special family of synthesizers that were all designed with much love. PWM Mantis is a collaboration between the late Chris Huggett (EDP Gnat, EDP Wasp, OSCar) and PWM (Paul Whittington). A hybrid-analog synthesizer, Mantis utilizes mathematically-generated oscillators with a pure analog signal path and a modernized design architecture based on the EDP Wasp with an OSCar-style filter. It is also duophonic, with two fully independent voices, and features dual multi-mode filters that can be combined in series or parallel. Fully featured, Mantis is equipped with an arpeggiator, 37-note full-size semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch, multi-function joystick, and MIDI/USB control for easy integration with any studio or live environment.

#NAMM 2024: PWM Malevolent and Mantis

video upload by CatSynth TV

"Paul Whittington of PWM walks us through the wild sounds of the PWM Malevolent, a fully analog semi-modular synthesizer with a screaming filter, and the new Mantis, a hybrid analog duophonic synthesizer with digital oscillators and fully analog signal path downstream that takes inspiration from the legendary WASP synthesizer.

NAMM 2024 - PWM - Mantis

video upload by sonicstate

"At NAMM 2024, Sonic State caught up with Paul from PWM as they showcased their latest synthesizer, Mantis. Paul, formerly associated with Novation, Focusrite, and Evolution, introduced the now-ready synth, marking PWM's debut at NAMM. Previously seen at Superbooth in its early stages, Mantis is now fully operational. The synthesizer boasts a true hybrid nature, combining DCOs, numerically generated elements, and analog signal paths with digital effects. Featuring a dual filter from the Oscar, additive synthesis capabilities, duophony, Chris Hugget - designed reverb, four types of chorus, 100 presets and 100 user slots the synthesizer promises a robust sonic palette.

A Korg MS-20 in the WORLDS LONGEST REVERB + other Synths in Weird Spaces // Poly Effects Verbs

video upload by DivKid

"Ever wanted to hear a Korg MS-20 in the worlds longest reverb? Of course you have, I have and now I have ... and now you can!

With the power of convolution reverbs and good impulse responses I transport some of my synths (Korg MS-20, Roland SH-09, PWM Malevolent and Eurorack Modular) into some unique spaces included a bombproof underground WW2 oil storage facility in Scotland, an abandoned cooling tower in Belgium as well as classic studio gear with the AKG BX20 spring reverb and the ECOPLATE 1980 plate reverb. Tremendous fun and fantastic sounds.

This is all with the brand new Verbs stereo convolution pedal from Poly Effects. It has 8 banks of 8 impulse responses (plus 8 more that can be user replaced) with some fascinating natural and man made spaces along with a collection of studio gear and create, weird and wonderful IRs too. Full features listed below.

PEDALS & PATCHES //
This is also a soft launch/announcement to talk about PEDALS & PATCHES my new video series on using guitar FX pedals within creative studio environments. I'll largely be synths and modular, though other instruments and environments will creep in. This launches in 2024 and will likely be a monthly video series. NOTE // this isn't a break from what I already do, it's an addition to it.

SUPPORT //
Supporters on Patreon get both an extended 'Precision Pitch Transposing' patch breakdown video as well as a whole other unseen patch not in this demo video. If you'd like access to those, along with the DivKid Discord community, further videos, PDF Patchbooks and more head over to https://bit.ly/DK-patreon , thank you for your support."

PWM - Malevolent.

video upload by The Unperson

"If you like experimental noise, and dark distorted growls, then you will enjoy this synth. I genuinely feel inspired to write a punky-experimental synth EP. Whether that will happen or not is another thing. But it's always a good feeling when an instrument can inspire you!"

Gearfest UK 2023: PWM Mantis Synth Is Coming Along

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Paul and Ben from PWM at Gear Fest 2023, where they provided an update on their Mantis synthesizer. The Mantis project was initially started by Chris Huggett, and Ben has taken over the firmware development since Chris's passing. The Mantis is now in a working state and producing impressive sounds. Ben discussed the challenges of refining the code and turning the proof of concept into a fully functional product, addressing features like the multi-mode filter and ensuring compatibility for production. Paul mentioned that the firmware and sound patching would require a few more months of development before moving into mass production. The Mantis is expected to be available for purchase in October, just in time for the pre-Christmas rush."

Superbooth 2023: PWM - Mantis

video upload by sonicstate

"Paul from PWM gave a us preview of Mantis, which is the last synth designed by Chris Huggett [EDP Wasp creator] before he passed away. The Mantis is described as a Wasp Mark II with an Oscar- inspired dual filter, and two analog signal paths that make it duophonic. The oscillators are numerically calculated on power-up using then move into the analog domain, where everything is digitally controlled.

The Mantis mixer allows users to balance between oscillator one and two, add noise, and ring mod. It has a deep, but simple to use modulation section, two envelopes with a unique sustain fall feature and 100 factory patches and 100 user patches. The instrument also includes a few digital effects at the end of the signal path that help sweeten the sounds and make it more of an all-around performance instrument.

While the instrument is still in development, PWM showcased the circuit boards that are provide a preview of the final sound of the Mantis.

PWM Mantis Available: Late Summer 2023

Price 1,599 Euro. 1,349 GBP"

PWM Mantis // released today

video upload by Starsky Carr

"A brand new synth from PWM - a new company with lots of history. Paul has worked extensively in the industry. Most interesting here are his connections from his time at Novation as the BassStaion 2 product lead. You may know that the inventor of the classic WASP and OSCAR, Chris Huggett, was involved there, and before his unfortunately untimely death he was working with Paul on this new synth. Paul has brought it to life with his families blessing.

A great story, and a great little synth. Still has a couple of pre production hoops to jump through but will be available soon."

Apocalyptic synth jam with PWM Malevolent, Meng Qi Wingie 2, Chase Bliss Mood MkII, Zen Delay, DFAM

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A song that started as a live, semi-improvised synth jam, and was finished by adding some extra sounds in the box.

I recently bought the Malevolent and Wingie 2 from the same friend, and thought it might be fun to get such different pieces of hardware in the same song. The Malevolent really can get monstrous with its drive/distortion, whereas the Wingie 2 reminds me of MI Rings, bright and ringing, but with tons of playability. From there, I filled out what I needed to quickly improvise, some effects on the synths, and some drums to play with. Finally, I added some extras like guitar and a little more synth after the live performance was captured. Notes below. It's fun to have no sequencers on the table and to just make music by playing the devices.

Meng Qi Wingie 2 via Chase Bliss Mood MkII - stereo plucks
PWM Malevolent via Erica Synths Zen Delay - bass synth wildness
Moog DFAM (x 2) - kick (on one DFAM), hats and snare (on another DFAM) - the DFAMs also had compression, a little stereo delay, etc. in the box (see the Patreon walkthrough vid)
Godin Stadium 59 via Elektron Analog Drive and Strymon Iridium - guitar
Reason Europa - synth pad
Reason Thor - additional bass emphasis on kick drum
XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2 - ride cymbal doubling one DFAM for last chorus

Thanks for listening.

When a synthesizer polarizes! Let's ask Paul about the PWM Malevolent

video upload by SequencerTalk

"It's a naughty screamer or are we getting the little brittish synth all wrong?

We have Paul Whittington the founder of PWM as a guest in the livestream. Together with him we will clarify apart from great videos and marketing whether the little spitfire deserves his place in the music studios."
