Soundtoys Little PrimalTap - Further Out

Note these videos are from 2014, but I haven't posted them before and Soundtoys is currently having an up to 80% off sale. Click through for details.

P.S. You can find additional posts from various users featuring Soundtoys here.

Some details on the Little PrimalTap, also see the fuller blown PrimalTap.

"Unique retro delay lets you echo, loop, warp, distort and mangle.

Inspired by the classic Prime Time* from 1978, Little PrimalTap captures the highly distinctive sonic imprint of this quirky, and well-loved (by those in the know) vintage digital delay. Don’t be fooled by its simple interface, Little PrimalTap lets you unleash your creative urges to echo, loop, warp, distort, mangle, or create cacophonous cascades of otherworldly sounds.

The Primal Sound

The Prime Time was used by a wide variety of artists back in the 80’s for rich guitar delay, chorus, flange and such, and it did a great job with those things. But the really unique character of its sound came from one of its limitations.

In an attempt to get more out of the technology (and probably stay under budget) it had a feature called Multiply that halved the sample rate each time the delay time was doubled. Sound weird? It does indeed. And it’s just the kind of weird that we love.

Twist And Shout

On this little beast, turning knobs is where it’s at, and that’s how to reveal all the oddities it can create. The Multiply knob supplies extra delay time that has drastic tonal changes with each increase. The Adjust knob creates pitch shift, chorus, or flange when moved. The Feedback and Input drive tie it all together to allow for sounds just not found on any of the “normal” delay plug-ins.

Feedback Loop

Yes, the Feedback can go infinite, and do everything from classic delay style looping to old school sci-fi space noise. Oh, and we doubled the massive 256 milliseconds of delay time from the original (128 if you had the non-expanded one) to 512 milliseconds, so you’ve got some serious looping power if you need it. It’s ok to let it get out of control, unlike the old days where you could blow your speakers (or your ears) if you didn’t stay on top of the feedback. Little PrimalTap lets you use it as another layer of sonic color, and even opens the door for synth-like sounds.

PrimalTap

Want even more creative tweakability? Check out the deluxe version, PrimalTap. You’ll get that same quirky PrimalTap sound with two independent delay lines, an LFO for automated pitch shifting, a menu of different delay algorithms, and the awesome Freeze effect. Dipole v2 by Sinevibes

video by Sinevibes

"Dipole is a through-zero flanger effect developed by Sinevibes. Available as AU+VST plugin for Mac. Product page: https://www.sinevibes.com/dipole"

"Dipole is a through-zero flanger. It employs two delay lines with dual-mode feedback, and one of the delays is able to run earlier or later in time in relation to another. As this time difference passes through the zero point, a very special sound transition occurs: with positive feedback, Dipole produces that coveted spectral “swoosh” effect of a jet plane fly-by – and with negative feedback the output signal warps and eventually cancels itself out. In the old days of audio production, such effects were created manually using two parallel tape machines - but now Dipole recreates that charismatic flanging, chorusing and psychedelic stereo widening with much higher fidelity and ease of use. The plugin offers both manual control of the zero point as well as modulation via its built-in multi-waveform generator."

Turning Reverbs into HARSH Instruments with Feedback

video by Perfect Circuit

"Manipulating feedback loops is one of the most interesting ways to explore sound, and reverb is one of the most evocative effects for placing sounds in space. Thus, curious minds are certainly wondering: what happens when you use reverb effects with feedback techniques?

In this video, Jacob gives a rundown of some of his favorite ways to use reverb pedals in feedback loops, and allowing the effect to become an instrument in itself. Touching on topics like no-input mixing, adding Eurorack modules to the mix, and strange convolution, this video aims to serve as a springboard for trying out reverbs of all kinds in ways you might not expect.

Specifically, we highlight these tricks with the Red Panda Context, the Strymon Night Sky, the Gamechanger Audio Light Pedal, and the Poly Effects Beebo, but we encourage you to try these patches with any and all reverbs you might have hanging around the studio. After all, this video is all about experimentation, and these ideas are meant to be explored, expanded upon, and inviting you to embark on new sonic journeys.
