How to setup midi sync between analog synths with Grandmother and OB-6

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

Sponsor plug: see Innerclock Systems for rock solid syncing.

"I received a question for how to set up the Sequential Circuits OB-6 as a master clock that can drive the Moog Grandmother to sync the two synths in a DAW-less environment. This is a universal setup process, where one synth has to be the master clock, and the other sync has to receive the master clock and sync its note attacks.

One caveat is that the old MIDI protocol that is used outside of a DAW is not extremely stable. I got lucky in this video, where clock drift didn't happen, but before the convenience of computers, electronic musicians used to buy expensive Master MIDI clocks to drive all synths from one location."

The Best Synthesizer Patch Tips from Superbooth 2024 // ELEVATE YOUR SOUND DESIGN

video upload by DivKid

"Elevate your sound design and improve your synthesizer patching with these 24 patch tips from Superbooth 2024. Grab the free (or pay what you want to support) PDF document of tips too. You can try these ideas on anything you already have, they're non gear specific and apply to hardware, software, analogue, digital, modular etc.

While at Superbooth 2024 in Berlin I asked people for their best patch tips and these are the tips they gave me. Timing index below to skip around, give them a go and let us know how you get on in the comments.

Barton Musical Circuits BMC110 Rhythm to Voltage

"Demo of a new DIY synthesizer module that can be used for creating rhythmic and melodic sequences as well as converting external rhythms into CV sequences."

via Barton Musical Circuits

"This module converts rhythmic patterns from gates into melodic CV sequences. It uses two 8 stage gate shift registers that can be combined to a single 16 stage. It can also be used as a standalone sequencer of rhythms and melodies.

Compatible with 12V or 15V systems, all jacks/switches are mounted on a PCB for no wiring when building in eurorack. Documentation has pinouts for the interboard connectors for people building in other formats."

Barton Musical Circuits BMC111 CMOS CHIME

video uploads by boogdish

via Barton Musical Circuits

This is a percussive voice composed of four CMOS square wave oscillators with manual frequency controls. The harmonies between them create metallic chiming sounds. Two of the oscillators have mute switches to simplify the sound, and a loop toggle allows you to create repeating sounds.

Compatible with 12V or 15V systems, PC mounted pots, but jacks/toggles are offboard.

"The Digitakt 2 is out, and it's easily one of the best samplers on the market. Today, we are going to do a live, beginner-friendly lesson on how to sample your external synthesizers into your Digitakt and use the sounds to create presets, then make a pattern from scratch. Accompanying us on this journey is the beloved Arturia Microfreak synthesizer and the Octatrack, loaded with my newest template full of performance FX.

Madrona Labs Sumu: Resynthesis (Done Right), Sample Mangling & Spatialization in One Cool New Synth

video upload by Keith Crosley

"Sumu is now in early access! Let's take a look at the new VST synth from Madrona Labs, Sumu. Sumu combines sample resynthesis, partial f**kery, FM, and spatialization to create sounds that are quite unique. We also explore Vutu, the companion app for Sumu, that allows us to process, analyze, and import samples with the amazing "Loris" resynthesis technology. The announcement about this synth got a little buried in all of the noise surrounding Superbooth 2024... so let's take a closer look and listen...

Also, I promise a look at some new wavetables in KRC Mathwaves, but never get around to it. Maybe next time, pard! (But go buy KRC Mathwaves, anyway.)

Grab your partial analyzer and get ready for resynthesis-a-go-go! Along the way, we even use a KRC Mathwaves wavetable to spin a freaking room around. That's new and different...

Modor DR-2 tutorial Part 1: Getting started

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The Modor DR-2 is one of what I consider the 'Big Five' in the drum machine world. There's the DR-2, Perkons, Pulsar-23, Rtym MkII and the Alpha Base.

This is not a sound design video, nor do I go through the many sound models and parameter options, that's for later videos. This one is a guide to the DR-2's basic operations, although of course there's plenty of hits along the way. The intention is to explore the many functions of the DR-2 in an ongoing tutorial series.

I've admired this machine for a couple of years and am excited to have got this one on loan from Modor. So it was very cheeky of me to switch out all the knobs for big black grippy ones from Erica Synths, but, well, it just looked too sweet and clean and my Big Box of Knobs is always looking for opportunities.

Soundwise there is a limiter on the output just to avoid any surprises and my voice is damping the drum machine level whenever I speak, which should explain any volume fluctuations.

Xtensions | Shared System 'X' tutorials episode 05 | New Arrivals

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"In my Shared System X series, I am exploring custom layouts for the MakeNoise multiverse. Since most modules offer basic features (modulation, basic waveforms, ringmod) they can also be useful for learning modular techniques. I already made a 'first patch' video for the new Channel Saver and PrssPnt modules, but they can have a different purpose in every new patch, so I wanted to use the 'new arrivals' with various modules like Morphagene and Mimeophon. They are extensions to the collection you already have, and this collection will immediately extend its capabilities with millions of new options. But I'll also revisit the DXG because it has a kind of 'weird' signal path I did not fully understand.

Here are the topics for today's tutorial:

00:00 Introduction
00:10 Dynamic gates
01:52 Complex LFO's
04:06 Mimeophon meets PrsSPNT
07:38 DXG insert/return
09:03 Waveforging (making twisted waveforms)"

5 Things with Univer Inter MIDI-to-CV module from Noise Engineering

video upload by Noise Engineering

"We're featuring 5 helpful tips for using the Univer Inter MIDI-to-CV module. If you find this helpful, let us know in the comments!

0:09 Picking Presets
0:43 Save that Sysex
1:23 DAW-Yeah
2:15 MPE Support
3:04 Chaining

More about Univer Inter: https://bit.ly/42SarJl
Watch the official Univer Inter demo video: [posted here]

Describing Univer Inter as merely a MIDI-to-CV module falls short of its immense potential. It serves as an all-encompassing MIDI-to-any-format converter, elegantly packed into a compact 6 HP unit. Connect to your gear via USB B or TRS MIDI, or use the included adapter to plug straight into those 5-pin DIN connecters we all know and love. Whether you’re looking to map clock, note, CC, CC14, aftertouch, MPE, or something else that MIDI can encode, UI can do it: we built in over 20 settings for each of the 8 outputs.

Want to control a pair of monophonic voices, complete with velocity and aftertouch? No problem. How about a polyphonic setup, with gate and pitch per voice? Easy. Need to synchronize an in-the-rack sequencer with your DAW or a MIDI clock? UI has you covered."
